Paul Daley and Tyron Woodley took the opening minutes to feel each other out. Woodley respecting the power of Daley and Daley staying low to avoid the wrestling of Tyron. Woodley was the first to land a significant strike which Daley answered with one of his own. Woodley got Daley against the cage to work for a takedown but was unable to get Daley to the ground. As they broke Woodley landed some solid strikes. In the opening five minutes it was Woodley who would be the more active striker. As the round ended, it was Woodley who was coming forward.
The second round began with Woodley as the aggressor working for the takedown. His boxing was crisp enough to keep Daley from stuffing the takedown. Woodley finally got the fight to the ground and was active from the top with punches and elbows. Semtex attempted to work his way back to his feet but was quickly brought back down for more punishment. Despite the activity from the top, Big John McCarthy decided to stand the two fighters up. Until that point Daley had only landed two strikes on seven attempts. The stand up put Woodley on the defensive and the round ended with him on the bottom and Daley throwing some big ground and pound.
The final round was a repeat of the first two with Woodley the clear better man on the feet. He got the fight to the ground again after Daley failed to land a knee and was able to keep Daley on his back for much of the round. Daley was finally able to get back to his feet and punish Tyron on his failed takedown attempts with heavy punches from the sprawl. Woodley worked through the sprawl only to have Daley roll for an omoplata which looked to be pretty tight. It was just a matter of too little too late as the round ended.
The judges saw the fight the same way scoring it 29-28 for the undefeated Woodley. Daley was originally expected to fight Evangelista Santos for the vacant Welterweight title tonight. Woodley picks up another win and improves his record to 9-0 and 7-0 in Strikeforce. The loss is Daley's second straight after his failed title attempt against Nick Diaz. He falls to 1-2 in Strikeforce and his overall record is 27-11-2.
