An Open Letter to Kim Couture

via Facebook

Dear Kim Couture,

From this moment forward I'm referring to you as Kim Borrego. When you first got married to UFC legend Randy Couture, I was stoked. You seemed like an alright woman and depending on how factual your biography actually is, you were a casino executive in Las Vegas, making you at least sort of competent in business. You helped Randy develop the idea of the Xtreme Couture brand, something that he wanted to establish for when he walked away from the sport of Mixed Martial Arts. By all accounts, you seemed like a good person to be around. The fighters at Xtreme Couture never had anything bad to say about you and you formed a friendship with Gina Carano which seemed to keep her in the gym.

You decided to find common ground with your husband by training MMA and honestly, who could find a problem with a couple working out together. The health benefits from training MMA help in all aspects of life and staying in shape is important for someone in their mid 30s. But then you started to change. You started saying things that were absolutely ludicrous that made people think you were either crazy or had an extremely distorted view of reality. You would claim that the "Axe Murderer" Wanderlei Silva had to turn it on to keep up with you in sparring. You'd challenge the credibility of established fighters such as Erin Toughill, all while never having fought yourself.

You finally decided to turn your hobby into a profession when you had your first fight in 2008. You left the arena with a broken jaw. You were determined to prove that because of your marriage to Randy, you somehow developed skills in just a few years that had taken your better half a lifetime of hard training to maintain. You signed a contract with Strikeforce, and despite your lack of talent, were given an extremely easy first fight in the promotion thanks to your adopted surname. You beat up that poor Ukrainian woman for almost two minutes before the referee stopped the fight.

But then you found out what happens when you face a real fighter when you took on Kerry Vera. Kerry had been involved in combat sports since she was six and understood that bedding a fighter doesn't actually make one a fighter. She gave you a vicious beating that left you battered. On top of that, Strikeforce cut you. Ouch.

But no, that didn't stop you. Nor did the divorce from Randy. You kept the famous last name because really, who the hell is Kim Borrego? Randy said he'd continue to train you but I guess things got a little weird around the Xtreme Couture gym and you bowed out gracefully (you didn't). You then had the audacity to start your own fight team. You took your two years of MMA experience and felt that was enough to not just train fighters but corner them as well.

Your most recent fight in MMA ended in disaster and finally the community felt sorry for you. Sheila Bird submitted you with a scissors choke that put you to sleep. Unfortunately, the incompetence of the referee put you in significant danger. Instead of accepting the pity of the community, you've actually joked about the fight. This was your one shot at having people not hate you and you spit at them. And on top of that you now want to become a professional kickboxer?

You entered with great intentions and helped create an empire for your husband. However, in a short period of time, you have overstayed your welcome. Part of the problem is that you never gave up that famous surname. You quickly recognized that by keeping it, people would always be willing to book you for an event, just so they can put "COUTURE" in big bold letters. However, that name is not yours to have and neither is this sport. I'm not sure what your talents in life are but they don't include fighting. I hope you find something that can make you happy. Just make sure it's not combat sports.

Your biggest fan,

Matthew Roth

oh and yes she’s a waste when MMA’s concerned but it’s even sadder that this guy gives a shit enough to shed even more unworthy light on her… you sir gave her more of what your complaining about… unwarranted attention and opportunity. Good Job!

Is it just me or does it seem like when women do stuff like this it’s just like WTF? But when a man does stupid stuff it’s like wow that guy sucks. I think sometimes we hold women to a higher standard at times, and that could be the cause of those povs at times. Does anyone know what I’m talking about or am I talking out of my ass again?

I don't see a sexist angle

honestly if this was say Gina Carano’s husband trying to fight MMA, he’d have gotten hurt badly at a low level event and that would be that. Ms Couture has managed to make a disgrace of herself and our sport for several years now. If she gets herself killed in the cage that’s going to hurt the whole sport.

Did I miss something?

Did Kim do something horrible that I am unaware of? A pox on the sport is a pretty harsh comment for someone that is just trying to make her way, whether she is good or not. If every MMA fighter, male or female, had to be a good fighter to fight or do something in fight sport, we’d have a lot less people attempting MMA. I don’t get it…..

Jesus crisis! Every one's forgetting that MMA/all pro sports are businesses first and foremost

If promoters are willing to give her a spot on their shows ahead of “better” athletes, then good for her! Means she IS a business savvy! The same applies to her keeping Randy’s last name, again a smart BUSINESS move. Finally, she has every right to start her own school, it’s up to her students to sign up or not.
Enough with the “keep the sport pure as water” shit!

by DrFernando on Jul 29, 2011 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

No. Masters have every right to open a school. Kim is a Master of no Martial Art.

Kim could open a bartending school, I suppose.

I feel sorry for her students that get drawn in by the name and then end up with Kim’s “skillset.”

If a hospital hires a person who has never even studied medicine as a doctor, and said doctor ends up seriously harming a patient, that hospital will most likely end up getting closed. If a woman with almost no mma training is put in a professional bout against a competent opponent and she is seriously harmed, the good name of mma is harmed, and it gets in the way of its growth and legalisation. If Kim Couture is put in the hospital after an mma bout, say the day before lawmakers in NY are to vote on whether or not to allow mixed martial arts, you don’t think that would sway them against its legalisation? I don’t care about her character, but people like her can seriously hurt the sport.

It’s Kim’s life really. I’ve heard of women keeping the last name of their ex-husband before, and while it seems like she’s using it to build a name for herself, the fact of the matter is that one has to use things like that to get what they want and at times get ahead. The thing is that it’s really not hurting anyone maybe except herself in the cage/ring. If she wants to do something like have a Fight Team, then that’s on her as well. Kim’s not good at fighting, but I don’t see why one would want to cast her away from being involved in MMA in some other capacity saying something like “You then had the audacity to start your own fight team. You took your two years of MMA experience and felt that was enough to not just train fighters but corner them as well! To even try and understand such absurdity could cause an aneurysm!”

I was done with her as soon as she said she was giving Wanderlei trouble in training with her “black style”.

Because this wasn't criticism...

it was just a hit piece about someone who doesn’t mean shit in the MMA game. It wasn’t caused by relevance or designed to generate web hits, and I doubt that Brookhouse assigned a Kim Couture piece on pre-fight Friday, so I’m curious as to where it came from.

i thought i was clear...

When I said I used the word “journalist” VERY loosely.

I can respect and admire someone that has the courage to get in a cage and fight when they have little training, and have already been beaten badly (broke jaw). I cannot respect or admire someone whose biggest skill is attacking others through blog posts like a 2 year old.

Like I said, this post sounds like it came from a scorned wannabe lover. As bad as you are at writing, no one is wasting their time calling you names and telling you to give it up. The fact that no one is willing to pay a nickel to see or read either of you is telling enough in terms of skill, ability and entertainment.

In all fairness, what did this post serve to accomplish?

by TREY JACKSON on Jul 29, 2011 3:29 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions   2 recs

I was trying to imply that we’re not journalists. We’re bloggers.

I’m waiting for Cageside to get added to the “Network’s Best” section of MMA Nation. That’ll be funny. Until then, I guess we don’t get a gold star sticker.

I take issue with the CSCC rather Kim

Seriously, if she had just lost the fight no one would care about any of this and Kim would just fade into the white noise. Sure, she’s a bad fighter and maybe her personality has flaws, but is this really called for? You want to start calling out fighters based on their personality? I sure hope we like the same music because with this sort of tabloid blogging I’m probably next.

No offense to Matthew Roth but I mean this is kind of a loser move because like I mean no one here knows Kim Couture personally. We weren’t there when all that stuff went down between her and Randy so we have no right to take out time to write such obvious examples of keyboard elitism.

And yeah she got scissored like nobodies business and that photo of her was slaptacularly funny, but still she has more balls than a lot of mma fans out there because at least she actually fights. I’ve talked to a lot of UFC fans who love the UFC, but would never get inside the cage because they fear getting punched.

Why don’t you mind your own and ease back that “Soundss like a post written by Randy Couture’s new wife or girlfriend” feeling we got when we read this.

by Matt Herron on Jul 29, 2011 4:28 PM EDT reply actions

I mean, just because like, we aren’t all MMA fighters doesn’t mean that like, people can’t have opinions and you know, express them.

you can have opinions brah, just not personal ones against someone you don’t know personally.

I mean yeah mma, she’s garbage and she thought she could fight based on who her husband was. But to bring up all the personal dealings is just out of line when you don’t know Kim or Randy.

Call me crazy but I don’t feel a need to hate someone I don’t know.

Seems simple enough, if you want her to go away stop writing stories about her… How many other 3-5 fighters does Bloody Elbow consistently have articles about (male or female)? None. This leads to her continually getting booked as much as the adoption of the Couture name does. Your article should condemn the MMA media, as much as Kim Couture herself, for constantly reporting on her despite her lack of merit as a fighter (for all the reasons you indicate).

Well, Ryan Couture uses his last name to push his equally as mediocre and unproven mma career. If that makes Kim feel any better I don’t know if she frequents Bloody Elbow. Just throwing that out there.

Honestly, enjoyed the piece. It is semi-topical, since the event was somewhat current and they just announced the referee from this fight shouldn’t be reprimanded. Does Roth reach in this article? Yes. But, not everything can be geared towards a Strikeforce event this weekend that not everyone cares about.

Bravo, Mr. Roth. Loved the piece. Glad you expressed your opinion, but judging by the comments, opinions aren’t allowed by this site…?

Other than leaving out the part where she beat up her personal assistant when she threatened to leave her, this piece was pretty dead on. Kim Borrega is an awful untalented fighter and not a good human being either from general evidence.

I would also like for War Machine to change his name back to Koppenhaver. He’s clearly just trying to live off the fame that machines like the automobile have acquired through their own honest toil. Machines have a long and storied history, and this guy just wants to steal some of their glory for himself.

From now on, he will be War Koppenhaver to me.

Statement on this article from Randy Couture's Facebook:

Roth, get over yourself. Randy Couture, the only person who should have a problem with Kim’s last name, has NO PROBLEM whatsoever. Here’s his statement on the matter:

“Why are all these knuckle heads still on my former wife’s back . Kims a good girl . Tryin to do her thing . We split as friends and it drives me crazy to see these guys like mat roth write hateful crap and post it on all the forums . She earned the right to keep the last name !
I wish these folks would just leave her be . She doesn’t deserve the nastiness ! All the best to you Kimi , take care R”
