Based on the premise that all MMA rankings are subjective but that it’s still useful and informative to know who the online MMA community as a whole ranks as the best fighters in MMA, we collect and average the rankings of the top MMA websites to produce our consensus rankings. We compile the top MMA rankings from each of our sources and award 25 points for a first place ranking, 16 for a 10th place ranking, 1 for a 25th place ranking. A formula is used to "normalize" the data so all fighters are awarded points from those lists that do not include a full 25 fighters. This formula ensures that each ranking site awards the same number of total points regardless of how many fighters they choose to rank. Each fighter’s total is divided by the number of possible points to determine their standing in the Consensus Rankings.

Those lonely, lonely patches of green
for Shields and Hendo. I wonder how long those will last.

I’m guessing Sonnen’s getting the rematch if he beats Stann. And if Maia goes through Santiago and Mayhem upsets Bisping I’d love to see that fight.
Maia/Mayhem would be great, but
maybe, aside from Bisping, he could get another guy who isn’t another BJJ ace first…

Observations
- Why the huge drop from Marquardt? He was the #4 MW in the world, he didn’t lose a single fight, yet he drops 4 spots just because he isn’t with the UFC anymore? What’s up with that?
- Mark Munoz does not deserve to be at #5 plain an simple. Damian Maia is the only top 15 opponent that he has beaten, and he barely beat him, guys like Marquardt, Belfort, Stann and Bisping have acomplished so much more than Munoz
- why is Vitor dropping like a rock? He was in the top 5 like two months ago, now he is about to fall out of the top 10
- also Jake shields hasn’t fought at MW in over a year, he shouldn’t be ranked there anymore
Agreed
I’m not worrying too much about Munoz’s ranking though because Leben’s gonna drop him out of the top 10 after they fight..and I forgot about Jake fighting at MW in Strikeforce, I’d love to see him move up. Him vs. Mayhem/Santiago/Maia would all be interesting fights
In addition to what Rich Hansen added,
He has 1 UFC win (at a CW) in over 7 years, hadn’t fought at MW in how long, and is 7-6 since his last (non-Franklin) UFC win…

Ok Munoz and Stann are ranked too high. Dunno what Stann has done that Bisping hasn’t. Hate him all you want he’s more accomplished at MW or at any weight for that matter. Marquardt shouldnt have dropped. Thats UFC propaganda at its best though.

who did Fight Matrix lose a bet to
To include “Anthony Smith” in their top 25 fighters (over fighters like Akiyama, Dan and Mayhem Miller, and Alessio Sakara…
Palhares is the dark horse in this division…
He’s only lost to Mardquardt and Hendo.
And I really think the loss to Nate would have gone differently in he was so worried about greased ankles. I mean it was halfway through the first round and he had already got Nate to the ground and almost in a sub…it would only have been a matter of time
Palhares is one of my favorites at MW
I really hope he gets a step up in competition because he could definitely be top 10…I just rewatched his fight with Hendo not too long ago and I forgot that Palhares almost subbed him with a leg lock. Also he’s got one hell of a chin, Dan tagged him with that right hand of his more than once

Dunno how you rank Sonnen behind Okami but ok.
by Spider_Vemon on Jul 29, 2011 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions
Based on the way he operates
I think it’s because Sonnen has a two losses against top ten opponents and two wins while okami has one loss to a top ten and 3 (two really) wins against top ten comp.

He talks crap
I think Sonnen is at-best a fringe top-5 guy. He’ll lose to most guys with good submission grappling.
by d.rok on Jul 29, 2011 2:34 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Maybe so but cant deny he beat Nate and Okami back to back and gave the Spider the most trouble he’s ever had inside the octagon (with or without performance enhancing…)
by Spider_Vemon on Jul 29, 2011 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions
I'm not taking that away from him at all.
But he’s too one-dimensional, with a huge hole in the thing he’s good at, to have long-standing success against top competition.
I see him as a good fighter who beats some really good guys he matches up favorably with and loses fights he should win because his sub defense is terrible. I think I have him somewhere around 7 or 8 (haven’t updated my rankings in a while). I think that’s about at high as someone can get with having glaring holes in their game.
