Star-divide

Based on the premise that all MMA rankings are subjective but that it’s still useful and informative to know who the online MMA community as a whole ranks as the best fighters in MMA, we collect and average the rankings of the top MMA websites to produce our consensus rankings. We compile the top MMA rankings from each of our sources and award 25 points for a first place ranking, 16 for a 10th place ranking, 1 for a 25th place ranking. A formula is used to "normalize" the data so all fighters are awarded points from those lists that do not include a full 25 fighters. This formula ensures that each ranking site awards the same number of total points regardless of how many fighters they choose to rank. Each fighter’s total is divided by the number of possible points to determine their standing in the Consensus Rankings.

ah the meteoric plummet of ryan bader

you were so close to the sun, and have now fallen the way of icarus.

I wonder where he lands?

Also rofl at anyone who has Bader ranked ahead of Tito. I’ve bagged on Tito as much as the next guy, but you gotta at least give him credit for a first round win.

Why?
Also rofl at anyone who has Bader ranked ahead of Tito

That was Tito’s first win in six fights since 2006, and the two before that were Shammy. Bader’s only losses are to the outright #1 and Ortiz. I will never subscribe to the leap-frog style rankings. There are quite a few people ranked above people who have beaten them.

Iole's rankings always make me fume.

Rogerio Nogueira is apparently not a top 25 fighter. Stephan Bonnar, K-Sos, Babalu, and OSP sure deserve to be ahead of him, right Kev! Not only them, but Kyle Kingsbury, Fabio Maldanado, and Lorenz fucking Larkin are all clearly deserving of a higher ranking than Lil Nog.

Let that set in for a bit. Kingsbury, Maldanado, and Lorenz Larkin… all above Lil Nog according to Iole.

Mousasi's ranking is still laughable.

How the fuck can he be there when Bader drops like a stone after losing to Tito? Bader is better than oh, anyone at 205lbs that Mousasi has beaten. And yet Tito doesn’t break the top ten? Looking at that table it seems like the ludicrous high ranking for non-UFC guys (basically based on MMA Math around Mousasi, who was overrated due to his JAPAN!~! background) is still alive and kicking somehow.

Brett Rogers was top ten and deserved to be. You can’t use hindsight to revise history.

If heavyweight isn't the toughest division in the UFC, then why doesn't someone that can kick their asses move to it? They don’t even have to cut weight!!

rankings are opinion based

i never let any publication tell me who the elite fighters are, rogers first 5 fights were in small shows his next 4 were low level talent in elitexc and strikeforce his 10th fight he finally got a fighter with name recognition in arlovski who he knocked out (another hyped up fighter) to me that doesn’t qualify him to be top 10 and when he did face good fighters he lost

i don’t know if you’ve noticed, but all top 6 LHW’s are or have been UFC champions (it doesn’t have anything to do with Forrest deserving to be #6, but i just thought it was a fun fact)

Cool fact . . with that said,
damn Chael Sonnen was right. The LHW division sucks. Does anyone the mental intestinal fortitude to hold on to the belt for a couple of defenses.

This is all tongue-in-cheek (or however the expression goes) but damn, the last guy to really defend his belt was Rampage when he defeated Dangerous Dan (who’s not a 185lbs. fighter Mr. Dana White – he fought at heavyweight several times). Yeah Machida “defeated” Shogun during the first match but we know that can not be “true” because his training partner Anderson Silva said he felt Machida won all 5 rounds.

Anyway, can Jon Jones defend his title twice? Well we know everybody thinks he’s unbeatable with Master Yoda-san game-planning his every move and he does train with GSP but let’s see what happens in the next couple of months.

It’s crazy how Tito Fucking Ortiz has the most lhw title defenses in the UFC!

Ortiz – 5
Chuck – 4
Rampage – 1
Machida – 1

If Bones or whoever else can manage to get 6 title defenses in that division they’ll instantly be in the record books and that standing would hold some serious water for some time.

by SentientAndroid on Jul 29, 2011 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions

my observations

 - what caused Feijao, to move up the rankings so much? He hasn’t done anything since losing do Dan Henderson, but he moved infront of Mousasi, and lil nog

- i don’t disagree with Tito, or Bader’s ranking, but i just think that Hamil should at least be ahead of Tito seeing as how he clearly dominated him in their fight

- i know it was explained to me by Kid Nate, but i still disagree with Randy being ranked

- also why the hell is Keith Jardine still in the top 25? He has acomplished absolutely nothing since barely beating Chuck in September of mo fucking 2007 His record since then you ask? 3-6-1 (should be 3-7) with his wins being against top notch competition like Aaron Lofton, Francisco France, and a split decison win over Brandon Vera. Jardine is one of the most overrated fighters of all time, the only things he ever acoplished really was TKOing Forrest, and barely beating an out of shape Chuck

by darkotto23 on Jul 29, 2011 12:13 PM EDT reply actions

Totally agree on all points:
  • the Feijao ranking is a freaking bloody outrage. I think it is time to protest. I like him and all that, but Mousasi is a better fighter in my opinion.
  • Tito won his first fight in YEARS, and he’s ranked higher than Hamill. HUHHH?!?
  • Randy’s ranking always made sense to me. Yawn. Oh yeah, he was on a tear prior to getting defeated by Machida. Who did he beat Toney, Coleman and eeked a decision over Brandon Vera. That’s the truth, pun intended.
  • Keith Jardine does have EXCITING performances but I don’ t know if he deserves a TOP 25 ranking. I guess fighting in the UFC will do wonders for your name.

Ah the Lyoto, Rashad, and Rampage triangle! Lyoto>Rashad>Rampage>Lyoto, the top 5 at lhw is tricky. Has there ever been another triangle besides this current one and the Maia>Chael>Marquardt>Maia one?

Anderson Silva, Edson Barboza, Jose Aldo, Charles Oliveira, Thiago Alves = Muay Thai wrecking machines!

by SentientAndroid on Jul 29, 2011 12:20 PM EDT reply actions

I prefer the Maia-Sonnen-Marquardt triangle because . . .

  • Maia dominated Sonnen and left no question who was the better fighter.
  • Marquardt did the same to Maia.
  • and Sonnen had his way with Marquardt en route to a regular decision victory because he doesn’t care about finishing fights, Sonnen wants his full 15 minutes of fame.

Why is Rampage ranked above Rashad? Not nitpicking, just wondering what causes that opinion. Is it that Rashad got violently KOed by Machida, and Rampage squeaked past him? Or because Rashad hasn’t competed in so long?

I cant seem to wrap my mind around Rashad being ranked with Rampage. Unless its due to Rashads inactivity. Also I think all of Griffins achievements are Just forgotten. Stops Rua, pummels Rampage, losses to Evans and the greatest fighter of all time in Spider back to back and is completely dismissed again.

1. Jones, 2. Evans, 3. Griffin, 4. Rua, 5. Rampage, 6. Machida, 7. T. Silva, 8. Hendo, 9. Davis, 10. Franklin

Second thing, if Thales leites decides to flop and butt scoot (like he did against Silva) for an entire fight and then gets kicked and punched in his legs cause he’s too incompetent to stand with a fighter and gets noticeably injured and losses the fight you dont see it as a bad thing?
