Introducing MMA Nation
This is a guest post by Luke Thomas.
Today I am pleased to announce the debut of "MMA Nation" (www.mmanation.com), SB Nation's newest mixed martial arts site. This is a project months in the making, one that I am incredibly proud of. Our goal is to make it the top destination for those seeking the best in MMA news, analysis, community and coverage.
This site brings together proven, veteran digital and print MMA media talent. I am joined by Nate Wilcox (founder and editor of BloodyElbow.com), Thomas Myers (founder and editor of MMAMania.com) and Jonathan Snowden (author of Total MMA and MMA Encyclopedia). The project is just beginning, but the talent is proven and shows SBN's commitment to MMA.
We, as well as the respective communities that we've created, nurtured and often times incited, are part of a company, SB Nation, that is on the cutting edge of news and technology. And we intend to use every advantage of this advanced platform to give our readers the most informative, most enjoyable and most responsive MMA coverage found anywhere. Exclusive interviews, in-depth event analysis, breaking news and feature stories that you won't be able to read anywhere else, will now all be located at MMA Nation. It's not designed to replace any one site or the other, but rather give you more of what you crave: The best MMA coverage on the Internet.
Like any site, there will be growing pains. We've got lots to learn in working together and leveraging the strength of this platform. We hope you'll keep us honest, on our toes and take part in the interaction between author and audience. Our brand is community engagement. That's as true at BloodyElbow.com as it is as BadLeftHook.com. So, too, will that be a cornerstone of the user experience at MMA Nation.

Agreed! - I for one welcome our new mma news overlords
The layout is certainly new and different than here, but after bouncing over there a couple times, it’s already growing on me.
Also, nice to hear that nothing is coming at the expense of the other sites/blogs we’re familiar with. Places like BE, Mania, and HKL all have their own specific vibe and focus, and it’s cool that they will be filtering that onto the MMA_Nation page, while keeping them in place going forward.
Bravo, cheers, and best of luck with The Nation.
Nope
BE will a) be just fine and b) a hugely important commodity to the company. In no way do we want to grow Nation at the expense of BE.

Hi Luke,
As it’s another site, I only see myself migrating there once (if ever) the quality here starts to decline like five ounces did. I’ll probably view that site as a secondary site thus displacing mmajunkie, but this is my site for MMA news.
As an aside, perhaps you recall that I stated you’re welcome to leave at any time but the Luke Thomas beard stays. Got it?

I am confused by all of this
and maybe you guys can’t say and if that is the case, that is fine.
But why didn’t you guys all just stay with BE and grow it into the best? Instead of leaving BE to form something you promise to be the best?
You guys say “Our goal is to make it top destination for those seeking the best in MMA news, analysis, community and coverage.” and then you say “In no way do we want to grow Nation at the expense of BE.” and those two things cannot be exclusive.
Y’all are on the same “mother ship” at SB nation. If you plan to be the top destination, that means you plan to push BE to #2.
What is the point of SB nation having 6? (BE, Nation, mania, HKL, the kalib starns site, the girls site) mma focused blogs on one site?
by dbcb on Jul 26, 2011 10:27 AM EDT reply actions 3 recs
there are a lot of reaasons
But fundamentally, BE is a community/fan blog, MMA Nation is aiming at being a professional journalistic site.
We didn’t want to mess with what’s made BE so successful by watering it down or telling the writers to be more politic with their opinions.
Each of our combat sports blogs has its own niche and mission — Mania = top line news, BE = community and commentary, BadLeftHook = boxing, Cageside = pro wrestling, HKL = kickboxing, Asian MMA, Gal’s Guide = gal’s point of view.
MMA Nation is our attempt to bring top notch professional MMA coverage to SBNation.com which is a very different type of site. It’s not a blog for one thing.
There are also business reasons — blogs are heavily penalized by google, advertisers don’t like them etc etc.

So mmanation will be a hard news site? Or more opinion and commentary from ex-BE writers like LT and Snowden?
It’s really hard to take this seriously as a big development when you guys already did a brand extension like this not too long ago. I figured the SBNation/MMA page would serve as a more “legitimate” platform where the same ex-BE guys could write and then have all their big pieces just linked back by the new editors at BE. In other words, a way to escape some of the stigma that BE has cultivated while still providing content for the page. Now there’s another site like that? What happens to SBNation MMA? Does it get bumped to 2nd position and BE to 3rd?
I think SBNation MMA now redirects to MMA Nation.
Basically going to be hard news on MMA Nation, more Op/Ed still on BE.

Wait, so SBNation MMA and MMA Nation are the same thing, with largely the same writers? So this is just a straight rebranding/relaunching? Did SBN MMA not siphon off enough BE readers?
From the way it sounds in here...

"Wait, so SBNation MMA and MMA Nation are the same thing, with largely the same writers? So this is just a straight rebranding/relaunching? "
Very, very different.
You can’t see a major component of it, but operationally we have nearly total control. Before we had little. We were simply an arm of SBNation.com and it gave us very little latitude.
Second, the site hasn’t even been live for 24 hours. Wait until we can show you how nimble and accommodating the technology can be to deliver news and opinion in a completely new way.
Nation also solves for a lot of problems we’ve encountered in the MMA space. Again, folks don’t necessarily notice it because it’s not on their mind. It’s stuff only editors and developers care about, at least in terms of figuring out how to solve. But it’s a gigantic leap forward. I can’t prove it to you necessarily in 12 hours, but in 12 months? You’ll see.

I really like your optimism, but I feel like you are speaking in very vague terms. What are you trying to achieve with MMANation that was impossible or improbable on BloodyElbow and Sbnation.com/mma ? What obstacles were in your way that lead to change? Consumers, myself included, don’t like change, and I’m sure you have some good reasons in order to do it. You risk losing your base.

Relating to the second point:
Ok. Sounds good Nate. I’ll be interested to see what you guys cook up. Honestly don’t like the formatting too much but that hasn’t stopped me from using facebook. I just hope you guys can churn out some quality content!
So basically the new site won’t piss off Josh Barnett by going public saying he isn’t cleared to fight, but BE can? BE catches a lot of flak for bringing things to the public before they’ve been researched and rightly so, but I really like the immediacy that that brings. If this is the case, I think the new site will serve a very important purpose as it will give the writers a formal place to get published and be held to a higher standard. I think it’s about time that the A list at BE gets the respect deserved.

Christ Almighty. That layout is awful. It’s a horrible jumbled mess and I can’t figure out where to begin. So much stands out it is sensory overload. It’s impossible to scan the page and see what looks interesting.
The beauty of Bloody Elbow and MMA Junkie is that you can scan the entire page in seconds and know exactly what is happening in the world of MMA. Then it is simple to click on the articles that interest you to learn more.

No, they’re right, it’s not good. And this is from a design/seo ‘expert’
I understand why and how the layout drives SEO, and I don’t think it needs a complete retooling, but there are a few clear design changes that could be made to benefit the reader experience without losing SEO value.

I shared in a post below.
Move the top stories to the top of the page where it’s relevant, beside the feature probably.
Tab some of the redundant or similar content.
Prioritize content and drive readers there. SEO experts will tell you all day how to create content for Google, and Design experts will tell you how to make the experience intuitive, but there’s still the reader experience to consider.
BTW, comparing this design to mlb.sbnation.com is disingenuous. There are several key differences. the MLB site is better (for now)
by C-Viggity on Jul 26, 2011 11:19 AM EDT up reply actions 8 recs
Thought I'd throw my 2 cents in, as someone who does this stuff for a living...
C-Viggity is absolutely right in my opinion, especially about the need to have your top stories at the top of the page. Right now the site’s biggest problem is that your prime real estate, the first visible screen worth of content, is largely going to waste.
I’m using a 1920 × 1200px monitor, and I still can’t even see the headline of the first “Top Story” without scrolling down. That’s a big no-no. Were I the one responsible for designing this site, I would have a whole laundry list of other issues, but that’s the biggest concern in my mind.
The graphic design elements of the site are very good, clean and simple but with lots of “pop” and other intangible buzzwords people are fond of throwing around. The content layout, on the other hand, looks like it was designed by an SEO-focused designer – great content discoverability for crawlers, bad content discoverability for users.

Three columns of varying content type and length?
It’s a hot mess.
But then so is mlb.sbnation.com – so if that’s working then I can understand why you would think this will too. But yeah, my first reaction was good lord this is confusing. It sent me packing pretty quickly.
BTW – ESPN.com is a hairball too. But CNNSI.com manages to have alot of stories but group then in a way that is usable by a reader. They use colors, tabs, section headlines and borders to pack the page with lots of leads, but in an organized fashion that allows a reader to make their way through it without feeling disoriented.
I apologize if this is condescending, but are you familiar with the F pattern? I don’t see how the layout is effective considering how human beings read web pages. There is nothing to hang onto and branch out from.

if I may make a few quick and easy suggestions
I’m with the group of people who think the design is a bit too cluttered and messy for human use though it may be great for crawlers. While a complete overhaul is unlikely, I think a few tweaks to the current design could help:
1. Put lightweight vertical dividers between the columns. Easier visual differentiation between your three main categories of Stories / Data (like events, rankings etc) / Community Involvement pieces.
2. The Weighing In articles have way too much text on the front page. They visually overload the site significantly. Maybe just an image/header/blurb link to the full thing. OR Make the text smaller and put it on a colored background (dark gray for instance). So that each article in this column is like a floating box of its own. Like BE does with promoted fanshots (http://www.bloodyelbow.com/stories/5)
3. Too much screen estate is taken at the top by the main story, ads, and 3 sub stories. I can’t even see the three column headers “Top Stories”, “Event Calenders”, “weighing in” when I first go to the site. Where the 3 sub stories currently reside right under the main story is where your column headers should go. And the 3 sub stories should go to the side somewhere. That means either the main story graphic gets smaller (such as becoming a square instead of a rectangle) or the video ad and radio ad go elsewhere.
Just some thoughts from someone who wants to see you guys succeed.

Citing experts in an argument over a matter of opinion seems pointless. I also find the layout garish and disorganized, and you can tell me I’m wrong till your fingers fall off, but it doesn’t change how I’m experiencing the site. I’m sure you worked long and hard on the layout and it stings to hear harsh criticism, but the fact is that citing “design experts” isn’t going to suddenly cause us to love the layout.
One day you’ll drown in your own condescension.
(and yes, the 90s just called, they want their layout back)

Perfect ergonomic shape?
If by perfect, you mean the ability (actually, necessity) to physically move your hand to a separate part of the controller to use the D-pad THEN move your hand back to use the analog stick, then yes, I guess it was perfect.
In the same fashion, my house is a perfect ergonomic fusion because it has a movie theater, regional parks and my office all combined. I just have to get in a car and drive to those places to do anything there. No big deal, it’s ergonomic perfection!

That’s the only person I can think of that would consider a controller so big I could actually crawl inside the memory card dock and take a nap “appropriately sized”.
And leave Sean Sherk alone. He’s a person too. Admittedly, a tiny, tiny person…………but a person nonetheless.

Here’s the Google trends for Gawker, Gizmodo, Deadspin, and Lifehacker: http://goo.gl/zE0X5
There was a huge dropoff in unique visitors in February (I believe the first month with the redesign), and traffic started to level off in March/April.
They’ve improved the design in some aspects. It’s still buggy, though. Just a disaster.

Wow.
I don’t visit Gawker sites often, but I clicked through to Deadspin back in April or so. The redesign initially offput me and I was annoyed, but the scrolling sidebar is pretty sweet.
However, one of the joys of old Deadspin for me was the gloriously goofy pictures they linked with the articles. Yeah, it was at times manipulative and not efficient, but it gave the place a certain tone.
I thought my opinions on design and stuff were basically non-relevant to traffic, ads and monetization, but I’m blown away by the redesign tanking Gawker’s stats that bad. Wow.
InStrength dot com.
It's a mess for three major reasons.
1. Navigation is a total headache now, and most readers are lazy enough that they won’t use the “blog.URL” option.
2. Article tags are visually and functionally non-existent, making searching for related topics off a single story damn near impossible.
3. Confining content to the “newspaper” style format doesn’t look good across different formats. It’s fine on iPad, terrible in browsers (especially if you don’t like endless scroll), and spotty in stories with large amounts of media.

With all of these SBN heavy hitters here I'll ask an off-topic question
I’ve asked before, its never been answered (or fixed), but why does the “older” link (i.e. showing 1-10 of 28 Older) at the bottom of any of the archived rankings pages STILL yield the message “404 Sorry sports fan, we couldn’t find the page you’re looking for…” Try clicking the link I included (from the heavyweight page).
Now that SB/BL is MIA I need it less than before, but still would love to be able to access those…

It's like they're trying to cram as much on the front page as possible
It’s well designed for low attention span, low patience people though, which is probably the average internet user. They can look at the front page, see a small snippet of every story and decide which one they want to read without having to scroll through every story. Plus, there are lots of pictures, so they don’t have even have to read if they don’t want to, they can just click whatever catches their eye first.
Definitely agree.
Too much going on.
"No person can disobey reason, without giving up his claim to be a rational creature." - Swift
the whole damn thing looks cluttered on the front page. Its gotta have some sort of organization. Maybe just because it’s my first trip and I could get used to the layout but I’m not sure that’s the case.
It comes across that way
because there are so many different size/shape/format differences going on. Something like SI (on their NFL page) probably has as many things, but much easier on the eyes.
It probably could use some minor tweaks, but it usable. Personally, I like the “clean” look of things like BE or the NFP, but I’m old and have an attention span, so…

What makes the SI NFL page easier on the eyes...
is partially because all of the sections line up horizontally. As for MMANation, the end of one section doesn’t correspond to the end of another section, so it more of scrolling down, scrolling up, scrolling down, scrolling up.
"No person can disobey reason, without giving up his claim to be a rational creature." - Swift
I think that is exactly it. Personally, I love the NFP (national football post) page, but like I said, I’m old…

This is a good thing.
I’m a fan of BE, but it’s difficult to classify this place as a news site. I don’t think the goal of BE was ever to provide balanced news coverage following rigid journalistic guidelines; it was more of a platform to present and discuss the things that are shaping our sport. But it’s always been a criticism of the MMA media that the journalistic quality is lacking. Hopefully this new site is a step in the right direction. Best of luck. I’ll be following.

Good luck Luke and Nate!
I used to be a sherdog and mma junkie site guy a few years ago and discovered BE because Luke was on the Jorden Breen Show. I decided to give it a chance and check it out. I’ve been hooked ever since and come to the site 3-5 times a day. Like a lot of people I dont like change but like years ago I will give MMANation a chance. I have glanced at it and it does seem promising for the professional platform that you are trying to achieve, and I hope the best for you guys!
Some Feedback
Great work guys, really looking forward to this.
The content looks stellar, but the front page is kind of a mess. Having the feature story as the main event of the page is good, but it kind of crumbles after that. Move your top stories to the top of the page (top right methinks, ala ESPN) No need to list every weight class for rankings, just tab it in a same sized box. Just a little too much going on with the page, and some of the top content and top stories fall to the wayside in that chaos.

its interesting
that the non-blog direction is being pursued here (as per reasons above, I understand) and yet can’t help noticing (even in context of dust up btn Fagan and Chiappeta (sp?) – which at the time was partly contextualised as ‘blog vs. proper news media’) that a site like MMA fighting has gone in design terms in the opposite direction (more blog like).
Also, is this the end of the current SB Nation MMA set up?
'if you don't have humility as a fighter, fighting will bring humility to you...'
I think the trick to getting used to the page is to avoid just looking it over and dismissing it. I gave it a look over a good three or four times and now I’m way more comfortable with it than I was when I first looked. There’s a lot going on, true, but once you figure the location of everything, and see whats going on in general, it’s nice.
I also like the nifty stuff at the bottom of the page. The Network’s Best is nice touch, although it’s a reminder of how out of place Cageside Seats is in a network of combat sports and MMA.

One more thing
For the love of god, get rid of auto-play video on load
Pretty please
I don't hate the layout of the new site
But I am concerned about the apparent exodus of talent and resources from BE. When Snowden left, the impression was that he had been somehow promoted from the minor leagues. I was sad to see him go, and I’ll be equally bummed if Kid Nate spends more and more of his energy on the new site.
On a personal note, while I have a wide range of interests, hobbies and sporting affiliations, BE is the only blog I participate in with any regularity. I love the community here. I love the tone, and I love the consistency of experience. The live coverage of major MMA events totally enhances the experience for me. I’ll probably occasionally check in on by the SB Nation site, but I’m not going to wade into a community with a bunch of random MMA fans, because I’ve been there before (COUGHmaniaCOUGH) and it makes my head hurt.
I really appreciate all the work Nate and all the rest of the guys (including the moderators) do to make BE such a high-quality experience, and I really hope you’ll keep it up.
Otherwise, good luck on the new endeavor.

Its funny because
as much bitching as people did about Snowden’s opinion pieces (and yours as well back in the day), it honestly feels like something is missing now. Don’t get me wrong, the quality of the pieces are generally great, but it is somehow less enjoyable to me at times (think of the difference between Snowden’s history/straight pieces vs his more highly commented pieces – both great, but in very different ways).
Its pretty well impossible to hate on Leland, Burke, Fraser or KJ, although Fagan has his (too rare) moments…

They’re out there trying to dominate the MMA world… Real glad that SBN isn’t content to ride out the fact that BE is already top 5 in the world.
The visual design's not that dissimilar to ESPN, Yahoo Sports or AOL
So it makes sense in that regard competing for their audience. mmanation.com being the direct link to sbnation.com.mma, right?

Love the idea of the site.
And I seriously love you guys for creating BE, which I visit many times a day. So please don’t think I’m just hating for my feedback:
I think the site is a bit too busy. There is too much going on. I realize you have site consultants telling you it needs to look a certain way, and it can be hard to disagree with them. I work at a software company that designs shopping carts for wineries, and I have to deal with site “experts” all the time. Most of those guys are idiots.
Look at it this way. There is one website in the world that is more prolific than any other. It’s beaten all of it’s competitors handily. One site to rule them all. www.google.com. Go there, and then go to www.yahoo.com and consider the difference.
Tasteful simplicity. This is what you should strive for in web design. And interface design, for that matter. Consider Google Chrome.
Any who, that’s my feedback. I really hope that you don’t think I am just being negative.

I just don't like having to strain to find the articles.
The MMANation page is just too clustered. And I realize some people might like that, or it’s the trendy thing to do, but it doesn’t make reading or finding articles any easier.
That’s why I like BE. I can find the latest news in a straightforward, scroll straight down format. That’s also why I dislike the New York Times front page. Everything is jumbled together with nothing lining up and no distinct sections.
For me, any time I see a website that just mashes everything together, I move on.
Why not just have two columns in a more organized fashion?
As for MMANation, pictures aren’t really necessary for every article. I can read. I believe it would be more beneficial to lose the majority of the pictures and make the headlines bigger.
"No person can disobey reason, without giving up his claim to be a rational creature." - Swift
I’m with you about that, I think if you are going to have that much on the home page, it needs to be done like SI’s NFL page.
Personally, I prefer the cleaner aesthetic of something like BE or the NFP page to either though.

Objection.
The Times’ website is awful. Any traffic they get is in spite of, not because of, their design. Currently 37th in traffic behind msn, cnn, and huffpo for comparison.
Not to mention that success /= quality. If someone asks me what the greatest movie of all time is, I’m not pointing to Avatar.

FPT makes a very important point here.
“success /= quality”
The problem with most of today’s websites is that they are modeled after other successful websites. This is an issue because the only reason nytimes.com is successful is because it’s the New York Fucking Times, not because it’s a good website. If the New York Times newspaper never existed, nobody would go to nytimes.com that because it’s terrible.
New websites should be modeled after successful websites that are a brand in an of themselves.
For example: www.dontevenreply.com , www.fark.com , www.penny-arcade.com www.bloodyelbow.com
“If you’re looking to increase page views, just start adding pornography. That’s what I did for my family’s reunion page and the effect has been tremendous.”

Luke, I hate to disagree with you, but the front page of nytimes.com is a disaster. This is because the people who designed it are trying to use the tactics developed to sell newspapers on a website. That tactic is to cram as much crap on the front page as possible because that is all a customer can see through the window before they buy it.
The problem is that a website is not a newspaper.
"Luke, I hate to disagree with you, but the front page of nytimes.com is a disaster."
Any time i read something like this I think “well, this is clearly wrong”. You guys can gripe all you like, but you’re so incredibly wrong it’s hard to know where to start. Among developers – and by the way, a huge portion of the the guys who built Nation were the same ones who built MMA Fighting – it’s widely considered to feature exquisite demonstrations of simplicity with breadth of coverage. To suggest otherwise is to be completely out of touch with reality and prevailing standards of website development.
And I’m sure someone is going to reply “But I’m a developer” or “I know developers who don’t say that”. Great, I know a lot of developers, too. I also know some at the Washington Post, AOL, and various other media outlets. You know what they ALL rave about? The NY Times.

It blows my mind...
that you’re still trying to refute an opinion by saying what’s the common belief among developers.
Those of us who don’t like the front page layout of the New York Times are out of touch with reality because web designers think it’s awesome? Ok. It’s good to know that the opinions of web designers have precluded the opinions of all others with regard to the preference of website design.
If the same guys that built MMANation also built MMA Fighting, they’re getting paid to take a dive.
But feel free to respond with “you’re opinion is clearly wrong” or “you’re opinion is clearly out of touch with reality”.
"No person can disobey reason, without giving up his claim to be a rational creature." - Swift
Here’s the thing. We are just a bunch of guys who love MMA, who love what you’ve done in the past, and just want you to succeed. We have no reason to lie to you.
I think the idea for MMANation is solid, and I will continue to stop by there every few days to show my support. That said, I don’t like the layout, and i’m clearly not the only one. I think it’s too cluttered. Maybe my opinion means nothing, but then again, I’m probably your target demographic.
Luke
You can find endless leading web developers who will tell you the NYtimes site has issues. I’m sure you can find plenty who love it as well. That’s sort of how that kind of stuff works. However, the critiques I have seen of it tend to be fairly valid. And again, it makes sense to me to listen to the end users thoughts on the design.
On the Times:
It is boring and lacking points of interest: colour, pictures, a variety of fonts or text sizes – this means the reader is overwhelmed by the multitude of information and text, in a way they might not be on a printed page.
The small point size of the font makes the information hard to scan; this difficulty is exacerbated by the monotonous size of the text. The simple white and blue colour scheme would work if perhaps there was a central wider column of information surrounded by two coloured banners, a design feature the BBC website utilises. Perhaps also using blue as a background for important headlines would also help the reader to visually scan the information on the page. Colour coding for different types of news (i.e. economic, fashion, art and culture, lifestyle, political, editorial) might also help the reader quickly analyse and compartmentalise the mass of information on the website.
These few changes would not only allow the reader to more easily scan the website, as they would a newspaper page, without sacrificing the minimalist design the NYT seem to be employing; it would also add some interest and artistry to the design of the website, which they already demonstrate, and indeed excel at, in their print design.
Essentially, for every "Look how great they were able to incorporate all of that information into one page!" you also have a "Why the hell is their so much information cluttered on to one page!"

We must run in different circles...
…I’ve never heard a web designer or information architect rave about the NYT site.
It’s very newspapery, not webby. Reminds me of early TV when they filmed radio plays before they understood the medium.
You’re right, of course. I was using www.google.com as an example of simplicity. But you don’t have to stray very far to find a great news site that utilizes simplicity: news.google.com
But that's not trendy!
You need at least three columns with big pictures, video, shiny objects, flashing images, etc.
That is what defines a successful website.
"No person can disobey reason, without giving up his claim to be a rational creature." - Swift
Lol. Seriously though, I feel like web designers are all in an arms race.
“we’ll make your website just like [insert competitors name here], only we will fit MORE crap on the front page!!! Everybody knows that more crap is more good! Just imagine how much crap we will have! [insert competitors name here] is going to be so mad when they see how much more crap we have then they do!”

If there's one thing I can't stand it's sigs that are longer than one line.
I mean, what's the point? I can't believe anyone wastes time reading a sig past the first line.
Why don’t you put the “top story” box where the “MMA Nation Radio” box is now? Switch their places and you will remove my #1 complaint with the layout. I think the site design is okay (not great) and there’s probably some unjust criticism from people that prefer blogs.

With regard to the MMANation front page criticism
I’m pretty sure the point is to provide as many digestible stories, and items onto one interface as possible, which is not as nefarious as it sounds: people multitask better than ever, and being able to select for easily readable chunks of information at a time is the key to developing an online readership. Unlike fast food, online reading benefits from a larger menu. I’m sure the tech designers understand this. The Yahoo/Google comparison makes no sense. The service of a search engine needs to be simple by design, whereas a website that functions as both news aggregator and content provider, must be more complicated (the template is clearly formatted after the Huffington Post).
It may look like trash now, but wait until you can’t sleep, and require your MMA fix: you’ll get used to the format, and once you’ve learned how to navigate (and you’ll learn quick), it’ll be your go-to guide. I don’t get what’s so bizarre about the layout anyway: it’s actually more readable than Sherdog.

Obviously, I agree with your first point. Who couldn't?
But I disagree with everything else you said.
Late at night, when I am tired, I’ll be sticking with Bloodyelbow for my MMA fix because I don’t want to feel like I need to work at finding material on the front page to read. BE’s simplicity is why I started reading it in the first place.
I actually think Sherdog is more readable, which makes me a sad panda.
