Top 25 Welterweights in MMA

1. GSP : He's the champion and he has beaten numerous man on this list : Hughes,Serra,Alves,Hardy,Koscheck,Shields,Penn,Fitch, Hieron  Next fight: Diaz UFC 137

2. Jon Fitch: He's always been the concensus n.2 welterweight , he has defeated Alves, Paulo Thiago, Diego Sanchez, Mike Pierce, had a draw with BJ Penn * which i thoight he defeated BJ) and only lost to GSP Next Fight: Possibly Kampmann at UFC 139

3. Jake Shields : He's 15-1 in his last 16 fights, he's the first one since Koscheck who took a round from GSP, he has wins over  Pyle,Kampmann,Condit,Okami,Daley,Henderson,Lawler,Mayhem Miller. Next Fight: Jake Ellenberger UFC Battle on Bayou

4. Carlos Condit: He's an animal coming off a 1st round tko at UFC 132, he has the tools to defeat any welterweight in the world, his last 4 wins have come from top 25 fighters, he has wins over : Mcdonald, Ellenberger, Stun Gun, Hardy Next Fight: BJ Penn at UFC 137

5. Nick Diaz: : It was a real debate putting him at this spot because Bj Penn or Koscheck could take it, but i've decided to put Nick because he's the one on a lenghty winning streak. He has wins over : Lawler,Lytle,Santos,Daley, Next Fight: UFC 137 vs GSP

6. Josh Koscheck: The forgotten man of the division since the beating he received from GSP at UFC 124, since Koscheck won't be able to challenge for the title until GSP is not champion anymore , i recommand him to move to the middleweight division permanently to chase for a title if not he will be the gatekeeper to the stars of the division , Next Fight: ??? Maybe Dan Hardy if he win his bout

7.  BJ Penn : The egnima of the division, will he be the dominator he was during round 1 against Fitch or the dominated during round 3 for the rest of his journey at welterweight.. i think it's the latter since Bj is just too small for the high caliber grapplers in the division and i don't see a Penn/GSP III or Penn/Edgar III so Penn is pretty stuck as gatekeeper with Koscheck Next Fight: Carlos Condit UFC 137

8. Diego Sanchez: Another gatekeeper to the stars, he has enough star power to get into big fights but will end in the losing end of the biggest fights as his record shows: Lost to BJ,Koscheck,Fitch and arguably Kampmann, Won: Thiago, I personally think he should move to middleweight since he packed some weight (fat) LOL! Next Fight: Matt Hughes UFC 135

9. Martin Kampmann: The Darkhorse of the division , he has the strinking and takedown defense  to be a major contender in the divsion we just need the judges to score the fights his way. Wins: Thiago, Lost to Daley, Shields, Sanchez all 3 controversial. Next Fight: ?? Fitch UFC 139

10. Jake Ellenberger: The heavy handed top prospect of the division will face his biggest challenge of his career vs Shields on Battle of Bayou , WIns: Pyle, Lost: Condit, Hieron,Story

11. Paul Daley: The best power puncher of the division but probably it's weakest grappler, he has wins over Kampmann, Lost to : Shields, Koscheck, Diaz Next Fight: Tyron Woodley at StrikeForce Chicago

12. Charlie Brenammen: Win over Rick Story at his highest momentum , Next Fight: Anthony Johnsson UFC on Versus 6

13. Rick Story: The Unlucky man of the division came from winning over former top 5 welterweight Thiago Alves to lose a month after to unranked Brenammen. Next Fight: Mcdonald/Pyle loser

14. Anthony Johnsson: The Striker to Grappler has finally put everything together to make a run for the title, he has wins over Hardy but lost to Koscheck, Next Fight: Brenammen at UFC on Versus 6

15: Matt Hughes: THE LEGEND OF THE DIVISION is still a contender next fight : DIego Sanchez UFC 135, Going away fight IMO

16. Rory Mcdonald: His impressive fights vs Condit and Nate Diaz make him a prospect to watch and if he wins vs Pyle at UFC 133 it's very possible he could move into the top 10.

17. Ben Askren: Bellator Champion : YANN! Next fight: Jay Hieron

18.Thiago Alves, The Muay Thai Machine, He has wins over : Lytle, Koscheck, Hughes, Parysian , lost to Fitch (2), GSP, Story, I'm sure he'll get a release if he loses his next fight at UFC 138

19. Jay Hieron: Bellator n.1 contender : Next Fight vs Ben Askren

20.: Mike Pyle: A veteran from WEC trying to reclaim his second Zuffa title by defeating 2 staright prospect John Hathaway and Rory Mcdonald

21: Brian Ebersole : Next Fight Dennis Hallman at UFC 133

22. Chris Lytle: The shoe in to be the next retired fighter he has wins over: Serra, Foster, Lost : Koscheck, Hughes, Diaz, Davis, Thiago Alves,Serra,Riggs, Parysian , Lawler WOW He knows how to lose

23. Dan Hardy: He was the closest Brit to win a UFC Title, has wins over: Swick,Davis lost to : GSP, Condit, Johnsson

24.Johnny Hendricks: YANN! Next Fight: Mike Pierce UFC 133

25: Mike Pierce: Closest fighter not named GSP,Penn,Pyle  to defeat Fitch

Pretty good job on the list..

idk how much I agree with numbers 4-7. Condit is on a tear, but I don’t think he beats Kos, Diaz or BJ.

I understand Brenammen beat Story, but I still think Story is the better fighter. They fight 10 times and Rick wins more than Charlie.

No Stun Gun?? I think he should atleast crack the top 25.

Also, I would like to hear your thoughts on Nate Diaz, and also Mike Swick(Injury or 2 straight losses?)

My thoughts on Nate Diaz is he could of been a factor at welterweight if he packed the muscles for his frame or he’s going to keep getting bullied in the cage like at UFC 129 ,I forgot Stun Gun but i’d put him just before matt hughes , Mike Seick would be ranked if it was 2010 but we’re in 2011 with 2 straight defeats to fighters tht are not even in the top 20

Wow, Thiago doesn’t even make the list? He’s easily better than Hardy, at least.

I was with you until you put Brenneman above Johnson. Ugly.

Sorry but...

Worst. List. Ever.

You don’t even put Thiago Alves in the top 25? That’s absolutely ridiculous. Especially considering you’re putting Koscheck (who we all know got beaten by Alves) as #6. Also Carlos Condit over Nick Diaz and Kampmann? Maybe but remember Condit lost to Kampmann. I probably think Kampmann should be higher, he has just had some bad luck when it comes to decisions lately.

Kampmann has the potential to be higher but i also have to go with recent results , and thiago is the muay thai machine i just forgot
To put his name

I did put Alves , he’s at 18

I forgot stun gun , he’s probably just before matt hughes

Brenammen deserves that rankong because he defeated top 10 fighter rick story

by jmacena11mma on Jul 24, 2011 12:04 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

How can you honestly say that, he was on a 5 fight winning streak and then he defeated top 5 ranked Thiago Alves. So how does a win over a top 5 makes the victor not a top 10 fighter?

by jmacena11mma on Jul 25, 2011 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

not all wins are the same.

Story won the first two rounds against Alves by holding him against the cage, he got lit up in the 3rd.

It was an impressive win, but i still wouldn’t rank Story above guys like GSP, Fitch, Shields, Alves, Koscheck, Diaz, Condit, Penn, Kampmann, Sanchez or Hughes.

Losing to Brenaman only confirms that Story was never a top 10 guy.

The fact that Breneman is ranked so high after beating just 1 top 20 opponent is ridiculous.

by darkotto23 on Jul 26, 2011 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Good point but you can’t deny after Story’s win, Story was the best welterweight after the super 7 ( GSP,Fitch,Shields,Condit,Diaz,Koscheck,Penn) and that’s a fact, so a win over n.8 welterweight in the world doesn’t give you the right to be 12? even if he was unranked

by jmacena11mma on Jul 26, 2011 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions

like i said, not all wins are the same

if story had dominated or finished alves, then i would have no problem ranking him ahead of Alves.

The same goes for Brennaman, if he had dominated and/or finished Story, then i would have no problem ranking him above both Story and Alves.

But neither fighter dominated their opponent, they used wrestling, and stalling tactics to outpoint thier opponents for a W.

Deep down do you really think that Brenneman is a better/more talented fighter than Thiago Alves? The man that has beat Matt Hughes, Chris Lytle, Karo Parysian and Josh Koschek?

by darkotto23 on Jul 26, 2011 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions

NO I DON’T THINK HE’S MORE TALENTED THEN Alves and trust me his spot in the rankings is just temporary after ufc on versus 6 he’ll go back to being unranked

by jmacena11mma on Jul 26, 2011 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

i know all rankings are based off of opinion but,

I’ve always felt that rankings shouldn’t just be who beat who, a fighters entire career should be taken into account, and the value of each win/loss should be calculated.

In some instances even if a fighter loses he can still move up in the rankings.

by darkotto23 on Jul 26, 2011 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I know he’s pretty high but he did defeat top 10 ranked Rick Story but don’t worry he’ll probably out of the top 25 if he loses to Anthony Johnsson
