Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson Conference Call Live Updates

Former Pride Heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko looks to avoid his third-consecutive loss when he fights Dan Henderson. Photo by Dave Mandel for Sherdog.com

Strikeforce will host a conference call at 1 p.m. ET to promote Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson. Scheduled to appear on the call are former Pride heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko, current Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Dan Henderson, current Strikeforce women's bantamweight champ Marloes Coenen, and Miesha Tate. Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker will also participate.

Follow Mike Fagan on Twitter for live updates, and check back here after the call for a full recap.

Fedor Emelianenko

-It would be a very important victory. Dan Henderson has fought for a long time, and has been a champ in many organizations.
-Of course it's important to be heavyweight champ. What's most important, though, is to be master of my sport.
-I don't know how long I want to fight. It's God's will. I'll fight the next fight, and we'll see.
-The two losses have not affected my confidence at all. If God is leading me down a path, then I must go down the path.
-One thing I've learned from losing is that I can thank God for all my success and failures. I'm thankful for all He's given to me.
-I'd like people to remember me as an Orthodox Christian fighter.
-I'm not sure what I'll weigh-in at. Probably similar to what I've weight before. Maybe a little lighter. My guess is 100 kg.

Dan Henderson

-It wasn't a "decision" to come at 206 pounds. It's hard for me to gain weight. I've done plenty of lifting and eating.
-I'm not going to feel outmatched or small out there.
-(On Fedor's fight with Lindland in '07) I guess I won't get caught in an armbar from the bottom.
-Against Werdum, he got a little cocky with his sub. defense. Everyone can get caught, I guess.
-Against Silva, he was a little out of shape. And the size got to him. Silva got on top and didn't let him move.
-He's still trying to hit me with the same punches he would have if he won his last two fights.
-I don't think Fedor's "just another man." It definitely excites me to fight him.
-I'm not going to forget my wrestling, but I look forward to standing and banging with him as well.
-I have no plans on going anywhere. I'd like to defend that Strikeforce belt and go from there.
-I'm always trying to be exciting, whether it's the first fight or the last fight on my contract.

Miesha Tate

-When I say Dana's ignorant, it's not a judgement. I just don't think he knows enough about WMMA.
-If you think about how you've been off a year, yeah, it's going to get to you. But I fight every day in the gym.
-I've had my eyes on Marloes for the last year.

SBN coverage of Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson

Star-divide

Emelianenko and Henderson will officially meet at heavyweight, despite rumors that the bout would take place at light heavyweight or a 220-pound catchweight. Emelianenko is on a two-fight losing streak, the first of his career, after dropping fights to Fabricio Werdum and Antonio Silva. Henderson won the Strikeforce light heavyweight title from Rafael Cavalcante in his last fight.

Coenen is the women's bantamweight champion, and she defended that title with a dramatic fourth-round submission victory over Liz Carmouche in March. Tate is on a five-fight winning streak, but has been out of action since last August. Coenen and Tate were supposed to meet in March, but a knee injury forced her to pull out from the card.

Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson takes place on July 30 at 10 p.m. ET at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.

Could you ask if there is any truth to the loser of Hendo vs. Fedor being cut?

They’re pay together is 2.3 million – 1.5 (Fedor) and 800,00 (Hendo). Will the loser of the fight be cut to trim down some of the costs Strikeforce (Forza AKA Zuffa) incurs on having one of these fighters compete on a card.

by Papercut Elbow on Jul 21, 2011 12:08 PM EDT reply actions

I haven't even heard this as a rumor... but there is speculation aplenty

Hendo is their champion and Fedor is their only draw.

I think it would be unprecedented for a promotion to buy out a defending champion’s contract. Fedor might be in some danger but I would guess that he’ll probably retire if he loses to Henderson.

Hendo might lose and abandon the belt in favor of a return to the UFC

The bigger question is, what if Fedor wins? What does it mean? It’s a fabulous win in a dream match but it doesn’t put him in line for anything other than perhaps another tiresome round of negotiations with Zuffa about coming into the UFC.

From a fan’s perspective (mine) I would need to see Fedor destroy Hendo to feel bettter about him continuing his career. I could deal with Hendo getting smashed because I feel that he has nothing left to prove. Winning the SF was a great thing to see…shades of Couture beating Sylvia.

Cut their champ????

They did cut Jake Shields when he was champ.

by mmariusp on Jul 21, 2011 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions

no.

they let his contract run out. they figured he’d go to the ufc anyway and banked on Henderson to take him out. then that shit backfired gloriously.

by Victor Rodriguez on Jul 21, 2011 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Dan also stated that this is the last fight on his existing contract as well though, not sure if that includes a Championship Clause or not, have feeling it would/does as after the Shields Fiasco, Coker stated he wasnt going to let things like that happen, but then stuff like Cyborg and Diaz happens and everyone is left wondering WTF…

How do you Know where Im at? If you dont Know where Ive been...Understand where Im coming from??

Coenen is the Women's Welterweight Champ

Not Bantamweight. Last I heard 145 is middle, 135 is welter, 125 is light, and 115 is bantam for the women.

Correct me if I am wrong though…

i had a 6' 170 lb girl go to my Bjj school.

She had a full ride volleyball scholarship and she was a cutie. DDs and thick thighs weigh a few lbs. She choked out dudes on the regular.
She was very athletic. It was a bummer when she had to move for work.

She's sounds exactly like my girl

Except for the crossfit trainer and BJJ part. ;-)

Not a lot of tall, thick athletic girls(with huge boobs) out there to compete against each other though, or in general for that matter.

I’m just saying if 135lbs is BW, there is no such thing as WW division.

I know it sounds sexist, but if you’re getting your ass handed to you by a woman who’s not way more experienced than you, you need to hit the weights. Bad.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. Having a huge strength and conditioning advantage goes a long way against anyone.

They recently changed what?

If that is the case what division is 115 called for women?

by RockhardMMA on Jul 21, 2011 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Super flyweight?

My guess is they use a system similar to boxing and 105 could be strawweight. Not really sure.

by Keren on Jul 21, 2011 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Can't find it anywhere

But if what Mike is saying is correct, the weight limits went up, not down.

He’s saying 135 is BW, so I guess that means that their weight divisions are the same as the mens’ now/

"Run and tweet THAT, homeboy."

by TheFilt on Jul 21, 2011 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

correct

Its a simple solution to a problem implemented while knowledge of the female side of the sport is still in its infancy.

Trying to set the names of womens divisions in a “heaviest class = heavyweight” mentality creates a situation where one weight has two different names for the different sexes. The average mma fan can’t remember that. Its much simpler to have the same names.

 145 = feather 135 = bantam. 125 = fly 115 =superfly 105 = straw

Wedlock sounds so much like a submission move when read on an mma forum.

And just like any other sub; you either tap out, get broke or die while still in the hold…

Has Fedor gotten even churchier???

It’s almost cringeworthy. The notion of “God’s will” spits in the face of the notion of free will which every Xtian I have ever met says is of fundamental importance. It is nice that Fedor has been a humble winner, but now that he’s losing he needs to own the responsibility not parrot words from Greek drama. .

Christianity has many, many variants and Fedor clearly isn’t Baptist.

I actually think it's refreshing

How many athletes do you hear thank God in defeat? I typically only hear them thank him when they are victorious. Fedor is teaching athletes the correct way to be consistent when it comes to religion.

by Stroma on Jul 21, 2011 6:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Fedor is Russian Orthodox

Which is part of the Eastern Orthodox Communion.

They aren’t big on free will as a necessity viewing everything as part of God’s “Sovereign Will”. They’re pretty deterministic in their Theology as far as my readings are concerned.

But why type Xtian? That’s kinda weird, why can’t you just type out Christian?

Ehhhh

Free Will is actually a really big deal in Eastern Orthodoxy.

2. That guy is Anderson Silva.
3. Don't fucking punch that guy.

by Chris Barton on Jul 21, 2011 6:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Ehh part 2

It depends on what his particular church eschews, but here is the main premise on free will:

What does the Eastern Orthodox Church teach about free will? They have never been concerned about the so-called discoveries of human reason. Rather it trusts the sacred Scriptures and the holy Fathers.
