UFC Fighter Dan Hardy: 'TapouT Ain't TapouT Anymore'

You won't be seeing Dan Hardy in TapouT gear in the future.

UFC welterweight Dan Hardy, a long-time endorser of TapouT gear, has had a change of sponsor. According to Hardy's twitter account he's moving on to Tito OrtizPunishment Athletics.  Hardy accused TapouT of becoming "the Corporation".

TapouT was purchased by Authentic Brands Group last September.

Here's what Hardy tweeted:

Hardy is irrelevant. One of the most overrated fighters in the UFC and should be cut after his next fight(loss).

What does his record or punching power have to do with anything that this story talks about.

What it has do with is a non-relevant fighter giving his opinion on an mma related subject. He’s basically a has been(or better never been)relevant mma fighter giving his opinion on a company that probably gave him issues to due to the fact that he is,as previously stated, irrelevant.

Stick Hardy on a UK card and watch the seats fill up.

Maybe i’m naive and maybe i value loyalty a little too much. But Hardy and Tapout go waaaay back and sure the game has changed, but yeah i’m a little surprised.

I’m not advocating the decision one way or the other. But from some talks with the company, I did gather that when decisions were made, success in the cage was a factor.

Seems to be an underreported story – the decline of t-shirt sponsorship in MMA. Affliction last year cut the number of fighters they sponsor by half and is now transitioning out for boutique fashion, all the ABG brands (Tapout, Silver Star) look to be withering, and Headrush isn’t paying people. Add in the fact that these companies look to be moving sponsor money away from MMA and towards other athletes.

by Nate Wilcox on Jul 19, 2011 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, there is

Many fighters have taken subtle jabs at Tapout since the new ownership. Nick Thompson was not very subtle though.

http://thegarv.com/Nick-Thompson-Focus-Fighting-Askren-F-the-new-Tapout.html

F!@# the new TapouT. After selling the company, they not only bailed on me after 5 years of sponsorship, years in which I turned down bigger sponsorship offers because of loyalty, but they have refused to pay me the money owed for my last Sengoku fight and have not even been decent enough to respond to me. While I am grateful the sport has grown, some of the growing pains from the sport’s growing makes me sad.

"A philosopher and solitary by instinct, who has found his advantage in standing aside and outside, in patience, in procrastination, in staying behind; as a spirit of daring and experiment that has already lost its way once in every labyrinth of the future; as a soothsayer-bird spirit who looks back when relating what will come." -Nietzsche

by Dallas Winston on Jul 19, 2011 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions

This is terrible for Thompson

But I don’t understand why a fighter would be “loyal” to his sponsor if better offers were on the table. It’s a business relationship. You need to do what’s best for you.

The Tapout guys used to guilt trip the fuck outta people for bailing on them for bigger sponsers. A sort of, “We were there for you before anyone else and now that you’ve made it big your ditching us” kind of thing.

Nice of Hardy to try to spin this in his favour.

After losing so many in a row, with pretty much no indication his skill set will improve, I bet TapouT either offerred him less $$$ or was thinking of droping him, if they didn’t outright do so. Anyone can see right through this. Hardy, you’re just not that good, and TapouT probably saw that.

As some one that has dealt with Tapout for several years I will agree with Hardy. Tapout gave a big FU to all the stores and dealers that helped them get where they are. First they undercut their own brand wit the crappy MPS line. Second I wholesale Tapout from various wholesalers now but cannot get walkout shirts and lots of places will not sell S, 3Xl or women’s product. When this company was bought last year, along with Silver Star, I said that they will get run into the ground and end up being sold again shortly. Silver Star has not made a shirt since Oct ’10 and Tapout is now the shirt that housewives buy their husbands when they see it on the sale rack at Wal-Mart.
