Demian Maia vs. Jorge Santiago Planned for UFC 136 in Houston
Two Brazilian middleweights will face off in Houston this October, when Demian Maia meets Jorge Santiago at UFC 136. Maia announced the fight on his Twitter account this afternoon.
Maia and Santiago are both coming off of losses, although Santiago's (a knockout against Brian Stann) was certainly a lot more decisive than Maia's close decision loss to Mark Munoz. Although both men are BJJ black belts, Maia is certainly a much higher-level grappler than Santiago, while Santiago's striking game is more developed than Maia's, although Maia did show marked improvement in his stand-up against Munoz, so this should be an interesting fight.
Demian Maia (14-3)
Loss Mark Munoz (unam. decision) - UFC 131
Win Kendall Grove (unam. decision) - TUF 12 Finale
Win Mario Miranda (unam. decision) - UFC 118
Jorge Santiago (23-9)
Loss Brian Stann (TKO - punches) - UFC 130
Win Kazuo Misaki (TKO - corner stoppage) - Sengoku 14
Win Mamed Khalidov (unam. decision) - Sengoku 12

Been asking for this fight for awhile. It should be a good, competitive fight between two well-rounded Brazilians.

Dangerous fight to take if you are Jorge. I think he should have gottan an average gatekeeper-type of opponent to showcase his skills to those who dont know him well.

Nah.
Let Jorge prove himself. If he losses here, he can fight Wanderlei next.

The only problem with that is that losing here would put Santiago at 4 losses in his last 4 fights in the UFC. There’s no shame in losing to someone like Maia, but I think there’s a strong chance that Jorge gets cut again if he loses this fight, even if he makes it competitive.

Luckily for Santiago
Maia has never shown the kind of power required to put him on ice. Leaving me to think this should be a prety competetive fight.

A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
Well, if Maia’s ever going to get a KO win on his record, this is his chance. With that said, great fight!

The UFC match-making has been phenomenal lately. There’s so much to look forward to for the rest of 2011.

This should be a really interesting matchup
Both guys are fighters who started out primarily submitting their opponents, and who have learned to blend striking and grappling very well. That said, I think Maia is just on another level from Santiago in all aspects and should be able to secure at least a UD victory.

Dead serious. Santiago has the worst striking defense in the division and that includes Leben and Akiyama.
Leben has awesome striking D!
Just because he uses his chin to block punches doesn’t mean it’s bad! lol
He defends strikes with his massive head!

Make 'em say uhh!
If he started using head movements he would probably hit the referee and get DQ.

And Santiago is a frustrating fighter to watch, he mixes things together quite well, hits hard, and presses the action… But he also does terrible things like closing his eyes in the middle of an exchange, with his hands down.
He is one of THE most frustrating fighters to be a fan of, really.

I think he is a far crisper striker, and I don’t think Maia could ground him and dominate him like he can do just about all of his opponents.
That and I just really want Santiago to get a win
Where does this leave Munoz?

He has a weak chin and bad striking defense but I think he Clips Maia after a serious grappling match. FOTN

This will be very interesting. I can’t wait to see how this one plays out.
