Nothing makes me happier

Than a truly angry BJ Penn. Somebody make this fight happen.

Exactly.

I’m not a huge BJ fan, but there are few things more exciting than a angrily pacing, blood licking, pissed off BJ. This needs to happen.

"any publicity is good publicity"

Is a very old saying used by everyone in the public eye. Not just fighters.
I am pretty sure being on Roids in sports does not go over well with the ad reps. At gatorade and underarmour. So I would put being on Roids and showing your Dick online in the category of not in anyway good press. It was a fair statement. Ironically , I don’t give a shit about either.

I don’t think you can compare being a member of Congress who shows your dick and a fighter who used roids. There have been many fighters who have been caught and forgiven(or at least people didn’t care to much) but I don’t recall many other people in Weiner’s position so I don’t think you can put them in the same category.

by DCJon. on Jul 15, 2011 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I know what the saying is. But he's very obviously talking about it in the context of fighters.

Funny thing about the English language is that it’s adaptable. The other guy was just trying to be “technically” correct and trying to talk down to somebody on the internet. Those kinds of people are douchebags.

Me pointing out that BJ didn’t have a fucking thing for GSP the last time they fought doesn’t have much to do with Nate, but I will say that the way Nate was buried rubbed me the wrong way. In my experience, cheaters don’t inform the commission that they’re supplementing their testosterone.

Plus, when I interviewed Wittman up at Grudge a few months ago, Nate was there making very loud noises by hitting stuff with his limbs. So there’s that.

by av1o3 on Jul 14, 2011 5:19 PM EDT up reply actions

How many times has Nate fought at 170?

How do Nate’s skills match up with any of the larger people that beat Penn (GSP, Hughes, Machida)? Let’s not forget the reason he was cutting down in the first place was because his skills didn’t cut it at 185 so he was banking on mitigating that with size.

What everyone needs to do is calm down, take a deep breath, and prepare their bodies for the Thunderdome.

by lowellthehammer on Jul 14, 2011 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know if that’s true at all. Nate left 185 coming off of a win, and before that his last losses at 185 were:

Yushin Okami (pretty good fighter)
Chael Sonnen (pretty good fighter)
Thales Leites (lost because of two point deductions, one for a piledriver)
Anderson Silva (pretty good fighter)

I think Nate could beat BJ at 170.

No, but had he beat Nate instead of the other way around, I'd think about it

At this point in BJ’s career, I’m picking most larger fighters over him. Against a guy his size, BJ is still a monster, but he pretty much walks around at 170 and I think he’s too small to beat a skilled fighter that has 20 lbs on him.

“I drilled zero defensive wrestling in this camp” – Fitch, immediately after the fight.

Props to BJ for a brilliant game plan and great execution, but Fitch wins a rematch. I was infinitely impressed (and more than a little disillusioned) when Fitch spun out of BJ’s back mount into his guard not once, but twice. I gave Fitch the second round.

What are Nate’s keys to victory?
I don’t think he’s a great wrestler (Which is the type of fighter that gives BJ problems)
He’s not faster (the other type of fighter that gives BJ problems)

I think BJ is better in every category with the exception of wrestling.

BJ is one of those guys whose fans love him regardless of how he's actually performing

He’d work Marquardt? Dude is 1-2-1 in his last four fights, and in the draw he damn near got beaten to death in the third round. He was contemplating retirement in the middle of the fight and when it was over he said, “I can’t believe I got a draw. i guess I’ll keep fighting after all.”

If Fitch can wear him out with superior size by lying on him, what would Marquardt do? Gassing fighter who always gases and gets worked would gas, get worked.

BJ would probably do what he did first round and a half against Fitch

And actually take Nate down.

And then he would gas from grappling with a bigger, stronger, better conditioned opponent. And then he would get his ass kicked in the deep water. Just like Fitch. And somewhat like GSP, although GSP didn’t let him get any offense going at all before wearing him out and then smacking him around.

Fitch used superior wrestling and a stifling ground game to wear out BJ.

How would that work for Marquardt considering he has neither of those things?

What everyone needs to do is calm down, take a deep breath, and prepare their bodies for the Thunderdome.

by lowellthehammer on Jul 14, 2011 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Nate's ground game is underrated

And Fitch’s superior wrestling didn’t keep him from getting taken down the first couple rounds.

The fact is that, at 70, if you can weather the early storm of BJ brilliance he doesn’t have the conditioning or mental toughness to keep it going for three rounds, let alone five. Then you catch his ass in a cardio window.

by The Ghost of Spike Owen on Jul 14, 2011 5:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he can make it

And all reports going into UFC on Versus confirm that. What they don’t indicate at all is how he will perform there, or how long he can sustain a good performance. And those questions won’t be answered til he makes it into a cage at 170.

Because the two things I think when I picture Nate Marquardt at 170

are conditioning and mental toughness, given that 1) he’s cutting a shitload of weight and 2) he uses/used artificial testosterone to enhance his performance. Seems like you harbor some resentment for either BJ or his fans and it’s creeping into your analysis.

Based on what evidence

You’re totally negating the impressiveness of his recent performances. Only 2 other people have starched Hughes the way Penn did in the last decade. Nate can't just follow the Jon Fitch gameplan because he isn't as good as Fitch

he doesn’t have a grappling-centric game and he doesn’t have the takedown threat to make BJ tentative. He’s a jack of all trades, master of none, and I think BJ would beat him up on the feet or submit him on the ground. If Nate tried to Fitch him I’d see the fight going the same way BJ/Florian and McKenzie/Nam Phan did on TUF with a guy trying to pull off a gameplan outside of his skill set, but failing and getting finished by a better fighter.

I don't think his striking is superior, nor on par with Penn's

But I do think the difference is negligible enough that will allow him to stick around until such time as BJ can gas or get frustrated and look for a way out.

BJ is a bully. He can dominate or he can lose. Not only does he not have a Ward/Gatti in him, he doesn’t even have a Berto/Ortiz.

I think Nate can take him into the deep water. Possible I’m wrong. Likely we’ll never know because BJ decided to pick a fight with a guy who is no longer in his promotion and hence a matchup that is unlikely (again, bully).

meh Bj is a quitter

nate just has to beat him 2 rounds and he will quit

by TigerTD on Jul 14, 2011 6:20 PM EDT reply actions

bj can sometimes be really annoying

he needs to learn to shut his mouth and mind his own business. dude should be preparing for his next fight but instead yapping his big mouth. what is he trying to prove that he can kick nate’s ass?

He doesn't have a fight set to prepare for

Seems like BJ is just being a dick here. Nate isn’t even in the UFC, what the fuck is the point of this?

this is reach, but just in case-- did you ever play counterstrike?

and if you did, did you ever encounter someone who was cheating?

think about how that felt, and that this wasn’t even your livelihood or a situation where that cheater could do physical harm to people

by LBo on Jul 14, 2011 10:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Believe it or not, I actually played counterstrike competitively for many years (shh, don’t tell anyone) and I find that to be a false comparison but I’ll bite anyways. I have encountered my fair share of cheaters and the best way to deal with them was to ban them, not talk shit to them. They are akin to internet trolls and talking shit doesn’t do much except rile yourself up. BJ, in this case, is simply stirring the pot. I mean, come on, showing up at Marquardt’s gym? That is silly talk.

ok two things

1. WOW – you know competitive CS. BJ Penn is the Mikey “method” So of the fight game to the letter imo. Incomparably brilliant in flashes, but inconsistent in his ability to show up on the highest level of his game. I’ve waited my entire nerd life to make this comparison to someone who’s heard of both people.

2. I’ll concede the trolling point.

I would take Penn for the ‘W’.

On a side note, the gif where the banner is continually poking Penn’s ear (before the second Edgar fight), may be the saddest MMA gif ever.
