Nate-marquardt1

With his PSAC suspension just lifted, Nate Marquardt now responds to his recent critics in an interview with MMA Junkie:

"Some of the fighters that think they're so cool and tough by kicking a guy when he's down – as far as my career, this has been one of the worst times of my life, and these guys are calling me a cheater and talking crap – I've taken note as to who those guys are, and I'm going to come for them. Eventually, I'll get them. I don't care if it's in a superfight or if they want to come down to my gym. I'll beat them up for free."

"I think you know who these guys are – Ben Askren, B.J. Penn, Paul Daley, Hector Lombard, cowards talking crap about a guy when he's in such a situation. They're trying to take advantage of the situation. They're bullies. Those are the guys I want to beat up."

"I'm not putting the blame on everyone else," Marquardt said. "Everyone had their little piece of fault, but I accept my part in the blame. The fault that I had, I take responsibility for. There are a few little things that if I could go back in time and change them, I wouldn't be in this position. There's things I'm doing now that will prevent this from ever happening again or ever becoming an issue.

"The truth is going to come out over time. It has already started to come back. I was under suspension for literally less than three weeks, and my suspension was lifted. I didn't get any fines. This hasn't happened before in this sport, and it shows that I wasn't cheating. I have hope. There are crap-talkers like B.J. Penn who want to kick a guy when he's down, and I would love to fight that guy."

Only way some of that is happening is if his opponents beef up. Though a part of me wouldn’t mind him fighting Lombard for some reason. I can understand his distaste but this is during a time where PEDs are just now being found out from Olympics to Baseball to MMA.

BJ would finish Nate in the first round, KO most likely.

There is no way Nate wins those first few exchanges, which will break his already weak mind.

As he struggles with the live python that is BJ’s front leg to no avail. He will break even further.

Why didn’t I keep my levels higher?” He will think to himself as Bj hops around on one foot, punching him in the face.

As he falls to his ass from a BJ overhand right, he begins to feel irritable, with no energy. Lethargic, even.

My stupid wife left those damn dishes in the sink last night. Dammit.” He ponders, as BJ begins the Mount-Smash-Take the Back-Heels to the hip-arm trap-RNC sequence.

“W-wait! How did I get here!? WHO AM I!?! Why is that little dude licking blood of his gloves!?” His mind screams in a fervor of low-T confusion.

Horrible. The poor man.

Bj would own Nate. Daley would own him if Nate decided to stand. Lombard is going to rape Nate.

Askren would be competitively awesome .

Bj seems to have a bushido code. He really hates steroids. I doubt he cares if someone who cheats during fights , test positive for juice, and is an alleged greaser doesn’t wanna be friends. I am pretty sure that fight would inspire Bj’s cannibalistic nature more so than any fight in a long long time.

i have watched all those fights numerous times.

Bj is a far more impressive fighter than his record suggests.
Nate is a swiss army knife. He’s ok at a lot of things , but great at nothing. Bj is great at just about every discipline in mma (his Muay Thai is not amazing) . Nate might be able to out cadio him, but I doubt it. Nate has never been cardio machine. I don’t see how Nate beats him.

That’s beside the point, he still throws people around and he can throw an undersized BJ Penn around too. If you haven’t noticed, when BJ starts getting thrown around, he loses the fight.

it kinda isnt besides the point.

He did not win the grappling or that fight. Using poor technique and burning energy doesn’t impress me. Neither does Nate’s constant cheating (that was a spike) . I am not talking about the Juice. I mean the actual fouls he commits in an attempt to injure his opponents.

And what fightS did Bj get thrown around in and lose?

He did win the grappling and he lost the fight due to a point deduction. I could care less what impresses you or doesn’t impress you, the point at issue here is whether an undersized BJ Penn, who has historically lost fights where he is thrown around, would do against Marquardt. All signs point to ‘not so well’. I don’t care much for Marquardt but you need to let your fanboy tendencies go and try to view this fight objectively.

I am obviously a big Bj fan. But Bj has fought better grapplers that didn’t throw him around , I just don’t see Nate doing it. I also think the cut to w.w. will rob Nate of his strength and gas tank. Out side of the first rd I wouldn’t view Nate’s size as an advantage. Bj’s superior technical ability would nullify imo.
I also think Bj is a better striker. Hence the owning comment.

Frankie is the most underrated wrestler in the UFC. He has dominated everyone he has wrestled. I actually think he could dominate fights with his wrestling as well. If Frankie ever faces someone better than him on the feet, we will see it (may take a while to find someone though).

If heavyweight isn't the toughest division in the UFC, then why doesn't someone that can kick their asses move to it? They don’t even have to cut weight!!

I think Nate is a cheater, and while I’m always happy to see him on a card, I’m not what I’d call a “fan” of his.

All I’m saying is that his statement in this case is totally reasonable in the context of who he is: a professional MMA fighter with a fairly impressive resume. Even cheaters get pissed off when people talk shit about them, and Nate has the tools to do something about it.

I’m just happy to sit back and see how it all plays out.

Marquardt is 6’1" and has found most of his success at 185. BJ is 5’9" and has found most of his success at 155. Marquardt refers to BJ as a bully yet he’s the one demanding a fight even though he is naturally a far bigger man. Is this making sense yet?

You can’t talk shit and then claim to be the smaller guy, especially when you are both scheduled to fight in the same weight class (and BJ never claimed this…just saying).

That's not the point.

The point is that it’s a bit ironic that a bigger man is demanding to fight a smaller man because the smaller guy is a bully. You guys are usually better than this.

but one isn't bigger or smaller!?!

They were both going to fight at 170…

If someone who is going to fight at WW is calling out BJ Penn, who is a current top contender at WW, how is that ironic?

I understand how their walk around weight might be, but when it comes time to get in the cage…it would be no problem at all to get a fight at the same weight class.

Its not like Forrest Griffin calling out Frankie Edgar or Brock calling out Nate Diaz… They both fight in the same weight class

I can't tell if you're trolling me or you're really this thick.

If you saw a ripped 190-200 lb guy on the street trying to pick a fight with a soft 165 lber and the bigger guy claimed that the smaller guy was being a bully, you wouldn’t think “Huh, that is not at all what I expected and is in fact humorous because of how unexpected it was”? I get that Marquardt could hypothetically make 170. That does not erase the fact that he’s fucking huge compared to BJ.

What everyone needs to do is calm down, take a deep breath, and prepare their bodies for the Thunderdome.

by lowellthehammer on Jul 14, 2011 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not trolling, and its not some guy on the street

Its 2 professional MMA fighters in the same weight class…

I don’t know how you can argue that one guy is being a bully?? Should nate not be allowed to fight BJ if he ever gets back into the UFC at 170?

I get what you are saying too…If someone has 20 lbs more muscle then someone else, then that means means that they shouldn’t pick on the other guy… like a 270lbs Brock Lesnar fighting a 240lbs Cain Velasquez…

by Fedorable on Jul 14, 2011 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Oh my god. This is unreal.

What do most people picture when they hear the word bully? A bigger stronger guy who picks on people smaller than him. Marquardt, the bigger stronger guy in this case, is picking a fight with a smaller guy and claiming that the smaller man is a bully. This is ironic because usually when a bigger guy picks a fight with a smaller guy the bigger guy is perceived as a bully. It has NOTHING AT ALL to do with whether or not they could make 170 or if they should/should not fight or if BJ could win (apparently yes, should, and definitely in that order).

Do you get it now?

What everyone needs to do is calm down, take a deep breath, and prepare their bodies for the Thunderdome.

by lowellthehammer on Jul 14, 2011 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I get that it is ironic that the bigger of the two fighters is calling the smaller fighter a bully…

But I don’t agree with you that Marquardt, is in fact, the bully of the two.

He’s standing up for himself against someone who verbally insulted him or whatever.

So while, yes, Marquardt has better beach muscles, and probably 25lbs on BJ in their walk around weight, I don’t think calling out BJ is being a bully, because the two of them can very well fight.

Now if Marquardt were to call out Kenny Florian, then I would say he’s being an idiot, because they could obviously never fight… still probably not being a bully, but just an Idiot

by Fedorable on Jul 14, 2011 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually the video of the bully getting power bombed was an eye opener for a lot of people about bullying. Bullies do not need to be bigger they just need more people on their side and willing to go along with the abuse.

This has nothing to do with Nate and Penn fighting, just pointing out that the stereotypical bully does not come in the form it use to.

I’d rather just climb this fridge

So what your saying, is that the bigger guy can’t be pissed about a small guy talking shit and wanting to do something about it?

What is so out of the ordinary about that?
I didn’t know small guys had license to say whatever they want to a big guy, and not worry about the consequences.

You are going by a double standard as well. You want to hang Chael for being asshole who talks shit about people while you believe Nate should be given some grace because “hes a nice guy”. I rather a fight talk all the shit in the world rather than spike another on his head.

Chael was caught once and never acts outside the rules in the cage. Nate has been nailed twice for drugs and has also broken so many rules in a fight that he lost due to point deductions.

I’d rather just climb this fridge

by Riley_96 on Jul 14, 2011 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m saying that if you’re going to hang one, hang them both. If you’re going to keep one, keep them both. And all of that spiking of Leites shit is irrelevant because, ya know, Leites didn’t get spiked.

“I rather a fight talk all the shit in the world rather than spike another on his head.” See that’s the problem right there, after everything that I’ve mentioned that Chael did (lied to the commission, cheated, xenophobe), you block all that out and focus on his shit talking. What about in the match against Filho where Chael tried to pull that bullshit “but I didn’t tap!” excuse? he did it again against Anderson, that’s a form of cheating in itself. There’s nothing wrong at all with a little shit talking to your opponent BEFORE the fight, but constantly doing it afterwards especially after you lost definitively and talking down about an entire culture is just fucking ridiculous. What if Penn just constantly talked shit about GSP and Canadians (yeah I’m aware) even after he lost?

And who the fuck doesn’t break the rules in the cage? I keep hearing about the spike, that’s your only ammunation when damn near every over fighter has grabbed the fence, kicked/kneed a dude in the balls, grabbed shorts etc. Hell I love Oliveira and Silva (look at my sig) but Nate’s supposed spike isn’t anywhere near as bad as Olive Oil’s knee (that broke some bones in Lentz’ face) or Anderson’s ko upkick. Hell, Bisping kneed the shit out of Rivera as well, so all of this constant talk about how Nate’s a blatant cheater really needs to stop at least as far as his in-cage performances are concerned.

I’m a little shocked so many people think Lombard would beat Marquardt. He has fought literally 2 good people his entire career and he lost to them both. Just because Marquardt has lost to Sonnen and Okami I think people underrate him, I think he beats Lobard comfortably

He’s beat James Te Huna, Brian Ebersol, Kalib Starnes, Jay Silva, and Joe Doerkson..all of who have fought in the UFC recently (or are still fighting in the UFC).

Schlemenko and Vitale are no slouches either…

So I think you need to give him a bit more credit then having fought only 2 “good” fighters.

I think Lombard would lose, only due to the fact that he fancies himself as the new Mike Tyson. If he were able to use his grappling credentials to take the fight to the mat, he should have no problem with Marquardt (who really only has trouble with fighters who are able to hold him down the whole fight)
