Rashad Evans Opens as Heavy Favorite Over Tito Ortiz
In the last two days, Rashad Evans went from slight favorite to heavy underdog to heavy favorite. Bookmaker was quick on the draw last night, opening Evans as a 3-1 underdog against Lyoto Machida. That fight fell through, and Bookmaker was quick to hang a new line when Dana White announced Tito Ortiz would step in for an injured Phil Davis:
Rashad Evans -450
Tito Ortiz +300
The first fight between Evans and Ortiz at UFC 73 closed at -110 Ortiz/+125 Evans. (These were the best available lines available over a variety of sites. Some sites had the fight as a pick'em.)
When they first met, Ortiz, at 32, was still exiting his prime. For Evans, Tito represented his first big step up in competition. The fight ended as a competitive draw, but it was a second-round point deduction for grabbing the fence that cost Ortiz the victory.
Ortiz lost three straight fights following UFC 73 before breaking his losing streak with a dramatic first-round submission over Ryan Bader at UFC 132. Evans compiled a 5-1 record, including winning the UFC light heavyweight title from Forrest Griffin at UFC 92.

rashad should take this fight but ring rust and a questionable chin are a horrible combo, the guy’s been stunned in his past 3 fights

Hence -450 and not -1500 when pretty much everyone can agree that Rashad is better at this point.
Not afraid to nitpick
You may be better,
But anything can happen during a fight. As we saw with Ortiz/Bader. If Tito can capitalize on an opening, he will definitely be able to stop Rashad, the only question is, can Tito find an opening? Honestly, I hope he can, he’s got 15 (25?) minutes to find one. Hopefully he has a good training camp and can make a good gameplan. Rashad is dealing with a really long layoff. I may be rambling, but all I’m saying is that I wouldn’t bet the house on Rashad.

I must be going against the grain
’Cause I like Tito and Rashad.
I’m really torn between wanting Rashad to get his much deserved shot at Bones for the belt and Tito making an amazing comeback run that nobody could have imagined. I think it’s going to be a hell of a fight, too.
Will Rashad rely more on his wrestling or striking? How about Tito, now that he’s landed that straight right on Bader, will he be overconfident in his hands and get taken down all day? I highly doubt there will be a finish, but if there is one, who’s more likely to get it?
All these questions and more will be answered next week, same bat time, same bat channel.

I'm somewhat indifferent to both
I’m just slightly less indifferent to Rashad. I also don’t necessarily want to see Tito make a title comeback because the VERY first thing you can guarantee him to do is go back to being incredibly douchey about his success.

Man, I hope not
To be honest, I can’t envision a world where Tito beats Jones, but if he did…Yeah, you’re probably right, he could end up letting it go to his head again. Although, Bones isn’t doing himself any favors in that department either, so with either of them being champ, it would kinda be a wash.
I think the three best people to represent the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship in terms of being humble & showing good sportsmanship would be Machida, Shogun & (argue if you must) Rashad. Of course, they have to earn it, so…

I predict that Rashad will win, but I will be rooting for Tito. I think that the fight can be competitive, and I can see it go to decision. The ring rust and long layoff for Rashad will most likely have a negative affect.

But really, it has nothing to do with being a nonconformist. I’m not just going with the unpopular choice because it’s unpopular, I’m going with the unpopular choice because it’s Rashad Evans who is always so unceremoniously scrutinized for very weak reasons. It’s like the same negativity is being hurled at him here, expect this time it’s much more passive aggressive by simply rooting for the other disliked figure involved in the situation regardless of Tito’s so-called “resurgence.” It’s like I’m watching people cheering for Palpatine over Vader because Palpatine recently beat Leukemia. Anyway, I was gonna be pulling for Rashad regardless so you can sit…AND SPIN!

IMO, Rashad’s 1.5 year ring rust > Tito coming on short notice having peaked about a week ago and having fought for 2 minutes without sustaining damage.
Tito trained for a great wrestler (Bader), so I’m pretty sure they already had a gameplan for him if he ended on his back, etc. It’s the striking department that’s intriguing, that is, how will Tito adjust to Rashad’s hands, etc. ?
Can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m rooting for Tito !

Tito barely accomplished anything against Rashad in their first fight, and since then Rashad has only improved. Tito’s improved a few things as well, namely he’s more comfortable on the feet, but come on. Rashad’s #2 or #3 in the world and Tito is Tito.

I wouldn't call it fair weather fandom
so much as enjoying a good redemption story. Tito had a string of shitty performances, personal life issues, practically everyone from his era has been beaten into retirement as of late, and he came out with all odds against him and choked out a top 10 opponent. That’s pretty goddamn awesome. Inspiring even.

The fight ended as a competitive draw, but it was a second-round point deduction for grabbing the fence that cost Ortiz the victory.
Tito cheated in order to avoid the takedown that would have cost him the round and thus the fight. That round was close and the way judges value takedowns Rashad would have taken it.
I think there should be a rule change
If you grab the fence during a takedown attempt, stop the fight and restart on the ground with you in closed guard, 5 feet from the cage (so that the guy on top can choose whether to push you against the cage or not let him use it to get back up).
Yeah, referee’s discretion will still play a role, but it’ll be better than the very subjective way that points are deducted now.

Right. GSP grabbed and pulled on the cage 3 or 4 times in R1 of his first fight with Kos, clearly using it to his advantage.

You see it all the time
And there’s a lot of times I can’t blame the fighter. You completely lose your balance you reach out to grab something, in this case, its the fence. I’d really be fine with a penalty that restarts the fight in the center of the cage with the offender on his back.

I also think..
If people got points deducted quicker, they’d be less apt to try the shit. Sure it’s instinct, but fight IQ grows for most fighters over time as well. And if blatantly stopping a takedown by grabbing the cage was an automatic point deduction, they’d be forced to learn or keep losing fights due to fouls.

I like the 5 ft from the fence that I proposed
It gives the guy on top the option to steer it in either direction, and given the infraction by his opponent, I think he deserves that choice. Sometimes you want to be near the fence to, well, fence him in, but other times you want to keep him away so that he can’t use the fence to help get back up.
by paythefighters on Jul 14, 2011 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions
That is probably fair, or perhaps give the fighter who had the infraction committed against him the option of starting where it took place or 5’ out?

in a sense its a question of
evening the odds (against the fence) vs punishing the wrongdoer (away from the fence)
Not true. He grabbed it once, while Kos was completing his only TD. It was a non factor, whereas tito grabbing the fence allowed him to successfully defend a TD and materially alter the success of Rashad in that round.

You are right, it wasn’t 3-4 times, it was actually 5 times, although 1 was more of a push off only.
At 1:27 as Kos takes him down.
At 0:27 with Kos on top of him
At 0:24 Kos still on top
At 0:18 Kos still on top
And at 0:14, Kos still on top, although it was more of a push off.
Now whether these could be considered as materially altering the outcome of the fight, no they obviously did not, but it does not change the fact that they are illegal.

What about Tito's confidence?
Coming off what was obviously a huge emotional win, where he took little to no damage. With their first fight in the back of his mind as well, I wouldn’t doubt if we see a similar Tito to last fight. It may not be enought to beat Evans, but I see it being fairly competitive, and we should get some pretty good hype out of it.
Bullshit.

I can’t believe Machida and his management were so greedy about this, fuck. How do you screw your way out of a title contention match? Ridiculous, but I guess it’ll be fun to see were Ortiz really is at.

Anderson Silva money is a term that means literally nothing. His last disclosed payout was 200k (i believe and I’m drunk so I’m not googling that shit right now) which is the same as Lyoto’s last disclosed payout (minus KOTN – googled it before I got drunk).

never seen someone so happy that they got a draw.
thats cause he knew tito was robbed of taking his cherry
Tito wins that fight and Evans probably never gets to fight a Forrest Griffin in a UFC title match.

Tito is worth it at these odds considering ring rust, Rashad's chin and gas tank issues, and the fact Tito looked as good as he has in years against Bader
i actually think this will be a good fight
the person who i believe has the most to lose here is rashad. tito is in a win-win situation regardless if he loses. he’ll cash in big time win or lose and if he loses, his job won’t be on the line as stated by the man white himself.
tito looked great against Bader
but I’m guessing they drilled that scenario countless times. That inside uppercut is not going to be easy to set up again especially against an opponent that’s seen it.

with Rashad's long layoff
and how many different opponents(?) not to mention Tito’s confidence right now, this might be the one time I bet on Tito.
Why do people keep mentioning Rashad's chin?
Tito scores a flash knockdown and all of the sudden Rashad’s chin must be made of wet tissue paper. I’m pretty certain (bare with me now) that regardless, Rashad will have the striking advantage today and tomorrow.

Thats what has me concerned.
I’m hoping Tito doesn’t think he’s Peter Aerts now that he has that KD against Bader. If so, it could be a short night.

Probably because Rashad has been knocked down in his last three fights, being knocked the fuck out in one of them.
Rashad’s striking is overrated anyway, he just moves around a lot and people get mesmerized by it for some reason. The only times he knocked someone out standing was Sean Salmon and Chuck Liddell and Chuck was winning until his chin failed him. He was even being out struck by Forrest before Evans got the takedown.
Give Evans some credit
That overhand right was a great counter to Chuck’s goofy-ass looping uppercut and it probably would have KO’d a glacier.

Rashad's chin issues aint got nothing to do with Tito's "flash knockdown"
Everytime he’s been hit in the last two years he has been hurt and he tends to stay hurt.

Because Rashad has been wobbled in his last 3 consecutive fights

When this event comes around I'm going to remember to pack an umbrella
cause I’m pretty certain there’s gonna be a whole lot of folks falling back down to reality (and writing off Tito as if nobody thought he had a chance all along).

I honestly think Tito has a decent chance of grinding out a decision if he can fool Rashad into thinking that he’s gonna fight a stand-up fight through the first round, and then take him down and keep him there consistently through 2 & 3.
I think his conditioning should be fine and he got a nice dose of confidence from the Bader win, but overconfidence and lack of a proper gameplan could be his undoing if he’s not mindful.

There is almost zero chance
that slow, plodding Tito takes Rashad down, much less is able to keep him there. He will likely be significantly heavier than Rashad, but I don’t see that mattering in this fight…

Right
I think Tito’s only chance will be to :
fool Rashad into thinking that he’s gonna fight a stand-up fight through the first round, and then take him down and keep him there consistently through 2 & 3.
;)
He’ll need really good setups to land any takedowns, so he’ll need to convince Rashad that he wants to keep it standing. To be honest though, I don’t think Rashad is going to play around standing up, he’s waited too long for his title shot, and I’m betting he wants to grind out a decision. I wouldn’t blame him either.

Tito’s gunna win? You have to favor Evans in this match. Tito’s gotta prove that his last match wasn’t a fluke. Sure, it would be a movie-like story line if Tito won, but come on…

I can’t believe so many of you are saying you want Tito to win. Don’t you people want to see Rashad vs Jones? What’s wrong with you? That’s the fight everyone has been wanting to see, and been complaining loudly that it wasn’t happening.
Rashad will squash Tito, and then go on to fight Jones. And it will be good.
i'd rather see Tito vs. Bones
Why?
Because it’s weird. It feels weird to say. It’s interesting. And, it’s an HELLUVA story.
Not that Rashad and Bones don’t have a good story going, but Tito winning would just be so…weird. It would shake-up everyone’s notions of ranking lists, MMAth, etc.
So in conclusion, I admire her commitment to community service.

Now I want to see Gorilla Astronaut Blue Spaghetti fight Bones next for the title.

My heart is so confused. First, I hated Rashad, then the beef with Jones occur where Rashad actually came of like a decent guy, and now he faces Tito who I used to hate because, you know, he’s Tito, but I couldn’t help but to cheer when he tapped out Bader and finally got to do the gravedigger-routine and now I root for him to have a last run att relevance, but at the same time I want Rashad to win so we get to see him vs. Jones.

I agree with you 100%. I used to dislike Rashad but he came out of the Jones thing quite well. I want Tito to win because he is the last of the old guard. I’m torn

Yeah it feels wierd to try to decide wich one of two fighters who you used to dislike you now like the most.
I guess I’ll take the diplomatic root and just hope for a good, competitive fight.

I never thought I'd say this.
I really want Tito to win. Not just win, but win violently. I’d like nothing more than to eat my words about his lame post-fight excuses, the end of his relevance, and his horrible attitude. There was a short period where I enjoyed Tito when he was opposite Ken on TUF because he actually came across as a real person, but for pretty much the rest of his career I’ve been one of his “haters”.
I haven’t been able to stand the way he’s conducted himself for most of the past eight or so years. When he wins, he gloats, when he loses, he panders to the audience (support the troops, etc. etc.).
All that said, I’ve disliked Rashad much more vehemently for much, much longer, with his one brief and shining unhated moment being when he sucked out Sean Salmon’s soul from his face, Shang Tsung-style.
I came off the couch, as did everyone else watching, when Tito blitzed Bader. If he destroys Rashad, I might have to give up the ghost and step out of the hater camp.
