It appears that the Eddie Bravo vs Royler Gracie rematch that the entire grappling world has been waiting for has finally been crushed. It was only a few weeks ago that Eddie Bravo said that he would only give Royler Gracie until July 10th to accept the bout or else he would not compete. Today, Royler Gracie spoke out and said he's not going to sit around and wait for ADCC staff to contact him, he's training to fight MMA. Yes, you read that correctly. He's not only going to fight MMA, he's wants Eddie to scrap the grappling rematch and meet him in the cage.
Gracie spoke with Tatame.com and had the following to say:
"I have no problems with ADCC, but the fact is that we didn’t get to an agreement on our negotiation and unfortunately the organizers of the event haven’t got in touch with me again. I can’t keep waiting, I have other plans for myself. I’m assuming this bout won’t happen", Royler told TATAME, saying he might fight MMA this year. I’m dealing with this MMA event, which might happen in Brazil.
I haven’t sign anything yet, but the negotiations are going well and it’s likely it happens. The organizer of the event even called Eddie Bravo to fight me, but he declined it, he didn’t want to fight me… And I said I was only punch him with my hands opened, man (laughs)".
I'm not sure if this was just a jab at Eddie Bravo or if the offer was actually extended. Gracie hasn't fought MMA since 2006 where he lost to Hideo Tokoro at K-1 Premium via unanimous decision. Gracie holds a meager record at 5-4-1 with 4 submission wins.
The rematch was one of the highlights of this year's ADCC tournament but it appears we will have to keep waiting to see if Eddie Bravo can repeat the success he found in his first match, or if Royler redeems himself and puts a stamp on his already illustrious grappling career.
