Mirko 'Cro Cop' Filipovic vs. Roy Nelson Planned for UFC 137

Photo

Although many called for him to retire from active MMA competition following his second KO loss in a row to Brendan Schaub in April, fan-favorite, Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic appeared on the Croatian sports TV show "Gol" this morning to discuss his career and at the same time, announced that he would be given one more UFC fight, and that it will come in October at UFC 137 against Roy "Big Country" Nelson.

This will be the last fight on Cro Cop's UFC contract and barring a decisive win against Nelson, it's unlikely he'll be offered a new deal. It's truly make or break for the Croatian legend, and for "Big Country" as well, who came under heavy fire from fans, journalists, and UFC brass after his embarassing performance against Frank Mir at UFC 130 in May.

Cro Cop also expressed regret that he would be unable to face Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in a rematch for his last contracted bout:

"The UFC does not like when fighters choose their opponents. Minotauro requested this match-up first and I said to Fighters Only that I agree. Then the UFC said, "not now."

Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic (27-9-2-1)
Loss Brendan Schaub (KO) - UFC 128
Loss Frank Mir (KO) - UFC 119
Win Pat Barry (submission) - UFC 115
Roy "Big Country" Nelson (15-6)
Loss Frank Mir (decision) - UFC 130
Loss Junior Dos Santos (decision) - UFC 117
Win Stefan Struve (KO) - UFN 21

UFC 137 is expected to take place on October 29th in Las Vegas. The current rumored card now includes:

-Georges St. Pierre vs. Nick Diaz - UFC welterweight championship
-B.J. Penn vs. Carlos Condit
-Hatsu Hioki vs. George Roop
-Mirko Filipovic vs. Roy Nelson

Did Cro Cop ever say he was retiring, though? AFAIK, Dana White said Cro Cop would never fight in the UFC ever again, while Cro Cop didn’t say anything. Then Cro Cop talked to Dana and said he’d like to get his last fight, and Dana’s since reconsidered his “Cro Cop will never fight in the UFC ever again” statement…

Tough fight for Mirko

I got Roy all day. I think he was off his game against Mir, and takes this fight pretty easily.

Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

by Dave Strummer on Jul 13, 2011 10:14 AM EDT reply actions

This is actually

the first time in a long time I actually favor Cro-cop. Nelson has a good right hand and good jitz, but I can’t see him taking Mirko down, and no way Mirko has slipped so far that he can’t avoid one of Nelson’s telegraphed-from-australia right hands.

by skeebop on Jul 13, 2011 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know man

he’s slipped an awful lot. Mirko seems to be getting worse every fight, and Roy is a handful for any HW.

Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

No halfway decent boxer would let Nelson land one of those shots. Except Schaub and dos Santos. But honestly I think their boxing is overrated.

I think you’re underrating Nelson. Yes his big right hand is loopy, but it’s not his only punch, and he’s able to take a shot to give one. The ghost of CroCop will have his hands full in this one.

I consider myself a softcore fan.

Nelson by TKO. It’s a shame they didn’t do Cro-cop vs Nog in Rio, instead of feeding them to youngsters (Roy is pretty old but you get the point)

This is a fight that belongs in strikeforce

Or at most prelims. I have lots o love for Big Country and CroCop, but they just don’t need to be taking up main card space these days (or facebook, versus, spike…)

by Ziggy325 on Jul 13, 2011 10:20 AM EDT reply actions

Roy went the distance against JDS, the current #1 contenders, and got busted up bad by Mir while he had pneumonia. I wouldn’t relegate him to the prelims until he has had at least one more really bad performance, and even then I’d still take Roy over a lot of the HW bums they give main card slots to.

The fact that he didn’t get knocked out is about the only positive thing you could say about Roy after the Mir fight.

Cro Cop stopped throwing high kicks for some reason so I think he has no shot.

OH NO

Roy might catch him with one of his telegraphed right hands! It’s not that I’m not low on Cro Cop, I’m just not high on Nelson.

I've called Cro Cop way too many times in the past hoping for him to make his triumphant return.

I think he’s going to lose this one, that’s what my brain tells me. His body just can’t keep up with his heart.

He has more of a chance of getting a highlight reel left head kick KO over Nelson than against any of his most recent opponents. That’s about all the optimism I can summon.

if Cro Cop isn't fighting Big Nog i don't want to see him fight anymore, he's gotten knocked out silly in his last 2 fights

He has nothing left to prove. As for Roy, i’ve always felt that he should be fighting Shane Carwin, they are both in similar places in their careers, and both are coming off of a 2 fight losing streak.

Nelson vs Cro Cop makes absolutely no sense to me, at this point the UFC is just using Cro Cop to give guys easy wins. :(

Similar but different than Cro Cop vs. Bob Sapp…

by Wonderjudas on Jul 13, 2011 11:26 AM EDT reply actions

I feel bad for everyone involved in this...

For the fighters because loser leaves town and at least for CroCop it means the end of the line

For the fans because this is an uninteresting fight with no implications other than losing one fan favorite

For the UFC because CroCop v.s. Nog would have meant $$$ and people would have loved them for making that fight happen, esp. in Brazil.

I have Nelson winning this one, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it was more competitive than some may think. CroCop doesn’t have terrible hands, and throws a good left hand.
I was kind of surprised about this quote: “The UFC does not like when fighters choose their opponents.” No wonder fighters say during the post-fight interview that they’ll fight whoever the UFC gives them.

Why would you be surprised that the UFC doesn’t like it when fighters call out other fighters? They like to control things (and rightfully so) and prefer when their matchmaking guys (Joe Silva, Dana White, I suppose) do the actual matchmaking…

by Shnak on Jul 13, 2011 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s not credible (probably a comment or something), but I remember hearing the opposite. Not exactly that the UFC likes it that fighters choose their opponents, but when fighters take more initiative in calling out opponents and such. Like I said though, it wasn’t credible, and I should have taken it less seriously.

I suppose it depends who… they might want to control who guys like Cro Cop and Big Nog fight in order to maximize the number of eyeballs, while for guys actually in the middle of title races, they might be fine with guys calling each other as it builds up heat, etc, etc.

I was so sad, when he said he's fighting again,

Mirko’s my childhood hero. I remember seing my first MMA fight, when my dad called me into the living room on one morning to see something. It was Cro Cop vs. Nogueira. It made me a fan of both the guys and the sport. it’s just sad to see him get KO’ed again and again…

If Nelson wins by KO I hope Cro Cop Retires

If he wins I don’t know where he goes from there. Maybe like a Nogueira fight or Kongo rematch. I think Dave Herman would be a fun fight even.
