Kim Couture Update: Couture Was Not Medically Cleared to Fight
Details continue to come in regarding last weekend's Kim Couture fight, and they do not paint a pretty picture. Couture competed on AX Combat 1 in Calgary, losing to Sheila Bird via leg scissor choke. Referee Len Koivisto was very slow to realize that Couture was out, leaving her stuck in the choke and unconscious for roughly 12 seconds before waving off the fight, then telling Bird to release the choke. Video of the fight is in the full entry.
Now, it turns out that Couture should not have been allowed to fight at all.
Going into the Bird fight, Couture was on indefinite medical suspension from the New Jersey State Athletic Commission stemming from an October 2010 loss in New Jersey. MMA Junkie has the details:
NJSAC commissioner [Nick Lembo] said the strikes that Couture sustained during her [October] bout in New Jersey were serious, and following her decision loss, an NJSACB-approved physician suspended her indefinitely. To be cleared, she was required to get a CT scan of her facial bones and needed a green light from an ENT doctor.
Couture claims that she did receive the needed medical treatment in February, however she did not inform Lembo and the NJSAC until 6:00 last Friday, mere hours before the Bird fight. According to Lembo, the information she submitted was not sufficient to clear the suspension.
Very late in the game, and the wrong paperwork. So, simply put, Calgary and Kim were notified that we were not lifting the suspension.
Commissions in Canada and the United States are unified under the Association of Boxing Commissions, and are supposed to honor the suspensions handed down by other commissions in order to prevent a fighter from being KO'd in New Jersey, then fighting the next night in a different state. It seems the Calgary commission was aware of Couture's suspension, but chose not to honor it and allow her to fight. According to ABC President Tim Lueckenhoff, this is a real problem:
The Calgary commission should have required that New Jersey lift the suspension from the database before participation. I have a policy that if the database shows you are suspended, you do not fight until removed and I have written documentation in hand. Each commission who is a member of the ABC must review the MMA database before each fight numerous times to ensure that fighters are not on suspension. The database is there for everyone's use, and to ignore the valuable information contained herein is criminal. Most fighters like in this case ignore this information and don't worry about it until it is time to fight again. [I] think we as commissioners need to make fighters accountable. They are professionals, and it is their responsibility to ensure that they are medically cleared to fight.
In response, the Calgary Combative Sports Commission has issued the following statement:
The Calgary Combative Sports Commission supports the suspensions established by other Commissions. Fighter safety is of utmost importance to us and we work toward that end in all theactions we take as a Commission.
As for the actions of referee Koivisto, CCSC representative Shirley Stunzi told MMA Weekly that the incident was under investigation at this time.

There are plenty of terrible fighters out there.
Not really for you to tell them whether to fight or not. It’s up to the commissions to decide whether someone is physically/mentally/medically capable of fighting. NJSAC made the decision that Kim was not cleared to fight. She ignored it and tried to fight anyway, and Calgary allowed it. This is more indicative of a breakdown in the commissions/fighter safety system than it is of Kim’s abilities as a fighter.
But choked out by ‘leg scissor choke?’ Come on now…..

Soooooo you’re admitting that she sucks then?

That would be fighter bashing, so no.
I’m just saying that any un-named and non-specific fighter to be uncerimoniously choked unconscious by a submission that barely exists is probably not going to be champion of a major organization in the near future. that’s all.
fair enough

Stuck in the joke?

I don't think the reffing is that eggregious.
He waits a little too long, but as soon as he checks her hand, he calls it.

Bullshit.
Everyone knows you pick up the hand and drop it three times.

I think the ref did a horrible job. It took several seconds after both of her legs go limp for him to even check her hand. It was some pretty turrible judging, no way around it. When you’re dealing with people’s physical well being, they need to be on top of their game.

I found it to be pretty nauseating...
Both legs kick on separate occasions before he ever decides to check on her… And he moves at the speed of a sloth when he does finally lift her arm.

I counted 10 seconds...
after her leg goes limp before he breaks the choke.

I guess maybe I’m wrong, and he certainly could have moved a little bit faster, but it wasn’t the worst job I’ve ever seen.

yeah..
The Calgary commission sure are doing wonders for the sport of MMA when they undermine another commission’s medical suspension.
I'd love to make a joke
but Kim Couture has had such a sustained, slow-mo train wreck of a career that its just depressingly sad.
Commentators show their lack of skills
The commentators didn’t even notice Kim Couture’s entire body became like a dead fish for what seemed like an eternity. I thought one of them sounded like Pat Miletich but I don’t think it was him. However, I doubt Miletich would have noticed the ref’s mistake either. Miletich is not exactly on the same commentating level as Rogan, Goldberg, Mauro or Bas.
As Goldberg?

Come on meow. Militech is a good commentator. And as a trainer and professional fighter, I think he knows what’s going on in a fight more than all of those guys except Bas.

Maruro
Is terrible. Somehow, he’s managed to become even less knowledgeable than Goldie. Every time someone does ANY Judo throw, he emphatically calls it an uchimata like he has any idea what that is. I saw a video of John Meyer calling a baseball game where he jokingly didn’t know anything about the sport. That’s what Mauro sounds like to me, but with a fake radio voice. He stinks and I hate him.

FUCKING SHITTY REF! Her leg goes limp at 2:08 and he stops the choke at 2:19, man what the buck!?

I think the real tell that the ref is not competent is the way he verifies she is out, then waves off the fight to the judges BEFORE telling Bird to release the hold. It’s a little thing, but in my opinion demonstrates his lack of understanding how to best protect an MMA fighter.

I would have liked to see him move faster. Overall take depends on if you think she was out when the first leg falls, or the 2nd leg falls. And I don’t think with that one angle that we can be sure. 2nd leg falls at 2:13 or so, and 6 seconds to get it stopped is longer than ideal but not outrageous. If she was out on the 1st leg falling, her time unconscious goes up by 5 seconds, which makes an outrageous 11-12 seconds of unconscious strangulation.
To give the ref his due, he at least got in reasonably good position, not like he had to run over from across the ring. But he should have started checking her when the first leg went floppy, and even if she wasn’t out then, he’d have been right on it when the 2nd leg fell.
I consider myself a softcore fan.
