MMA Awards, First Half of 2011 - Best Comeback
Over the next few days, Bloody Elbow is going to ask for your opinion on some of the best things that have happened in the MMA world over the first half of 2011. There will be a total of eight different categories you'll be asked to vote on. For simplicity's sake we're going to stick with high-level and relevant MMA stuff in these posts. While I'm sure there was a ludicrous knockout in an unscheduled MMA event at The Lumberyard strip club in Des Moines, or an insane pancreas lock submission on an obscure ZST! card in Japan, let's just stick to stuff a lot of us have seen, okay? And yes, we'll count UFC 132 in this despite it being on July 2nd, since I'm getting a late start on it.
It's pretty simple. I'll post 10 options in a category, you vote for what you think was the best. If you think I left something really important off my list, post it in the comments and we can add it to the poll if it's deemed worthy. I can almost guarantee you won't like all my suggestions, but narrowing down these lists to 10 is tough.
Now that we've got that out of the way, let's get onto the fourth poll - the best comeback of the first half of 2011. Everyone's been watching a fight where they think a guy is done. He's being pelted with shots, or he's covering up, or just barely avoiding tapping out. Then he miraculously rises from the grave and ends up winning. That's what today's poll is about.
Here we go, in no particular order:
Nick Diaz vs. Paul Daley, Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley - Daley dropped Nick with a monster hook and jumped in looking for the finish, but Diaz weathered the storm and matched to pick up the TKO victory with seconds to go in the first round.
Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard, UFC 125 - Maynard absolutely destroyed Edgar in the first round, offering up one of the best cases for a 10-7 round that I've seen in MMA to date. But Edgar persevered, got his game going in the second, and outworked Maynard for the rest of the fight. It ended in a draw, but Edgar was dead-to-rights in the first and his resilience was amazing.
Brian Cobb vs. Drew Fickett, MFC 30 - Fickett had taken Cobb's back and locked in a body triangle in the first, and kept switching between RNC and neck crank attempts that were very close to finishing Cobb. Cobb finally managed to roll into Fickett's guard and just started unloading shots on Fickett until the ref jumped in with 16 seconds to go in the round and gave the win to Cobb.
Nik Lentz vs. Waylon Lowe, UFC Fight Night 24 - Lowe had taken the first two rounds from Lentz by frustrating him with his superior wrestling and heavy shots. Lowe opened up the third with some heavy leather as well, but as he shot in for a takedown, Lentz locked up a super-tight guillotine, got full guard, and squeezed until Lowe had to tap halfway through the third.
Shane Roller vs. Thiago Tavares, UFC on Versus 3 - Roller had got absolutely nothing going in the fight after being hurt by a Tavares punch halfway through the first. He lost the first round convincingly and was still trying to get his head straight in the second, getting taken down and outstruck for the first half of the round. Out of nowhere though, Roller pawed with a left jab then landed a bomb of a right hand that dropped Tavares. Two more right hands on the ground and Tavares was napping.
There are five more options after the jump, plus the poll.
Cheick Kongo vs. Pat Barry, UFC on Versus 4 - Barry had knocked Kongo down and it looked for all the world like Kongo was absolutely done. Then he managed to get to his feet and land two punches, and Barry went down like a ton of bricks, unconscious.
Marloes Coenen vs. Liz Carmouche, Strikeforce: Feijao vs. Henderson - Carmouche steamrolled though Coenen for the first three rounds, tossing her around and keeping her grounded so she couldn't get any offense going. Finally in the fourth Coenen was able to lock on a triangle and adjust it accordingly to get the submission win.
Diego Sanchez vs. Martin Kampmann, UFC on Versus 3 - Kampmann dominated the first by stuffing takedowns and punishing Sanchez, even dropping him momentarily at one point with a punch. Sanchez continued on with very bloody mouth, and while he had his takedowns stuffed again he was much more successful on the feet. It still seemed like a Kampmann round though. The third saw Diego finally get a (brief) takedown and land some solid shots. It was a very controversial decision and a lot of people thought Kampmann won, but Diego showed a lot of heart to come back and keep fighting like that.
Conor Heun vs. Magno Almeida, Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum - Almeida had Heun locked up in a nasty armbar in the second round that should have ended his night for sure, but he somehow got out and ended up winning a decision. After the fight, the camera showed off Heun's dislocated elbow to the disgust and awe of just about everyone watching.
Jeremy Stephens vs. Marcus Davis, UFC 125 - Davis had successfully used his boxing to frustrate Stephens and take the first two rounds. In the middle of the third though, Stephens landed a short right hand that put The Irish Hand Grenade out cold and gave Stephens the victory.

Frankie Edgar all day, although I think Cheick will win. It was a fluke, and it wasn’t in a title fight, whereas Frankie’s was.

Kongo
I think Frankie’s comeback is marred by it being a draw.

That’s a fair point, but it was still an important fight, whereas Cheick and Pat are just good, mid-level UFC fighters. Plus things that just happen, don’t impress me as much as Frankie consciously toughing it out, recovering and fighting through that beating. Fair point though, I expect it to win.

He should have won.
He won every other round other than the first, if you ask me.

He still… came back. He tied the fight, won it in my opinion, and retained his belt. It’s still a comeback, just maybe less impressive to you because he didn’t win it either.

Sure, I totally get your point, and you’re actually swaying me a bit:) It’s just that the Cheick comeback was almost more of a craziest moment of the year sort of thing to me. I know there are no intentional lucky punches, but it was just so flukey.

Because he was beaten so bad that he was out on his feet in the first
and came back to take control of the fight and was not only competitive with Gray but won a majority of the rounds afterwards. The amount of heart displayed in that performance was unuckingreal and was akin to the first Marquez/Pacquiao fight in a lot of ways.

Sanchez landed some big shots, sure, but does that mean every big shot you land equals an "almost knockout"?
Kampmann actually DID knock down Sanchez. He also punched him in the face more and stuffed all but one takedown. It was a close fight, but one that should have went to Martin.

It was a hell of a fight...
but Kampmann deserved the victory: stuffing takedowns, landing more strikes, landing more effective strikes, getting knockdowns.
But yeah, that number sounds about right. I think it may even be more.
"No person can disobey reason, without giving up his claim to be a rational creature." - Swift
My opinion here is definitively biased.
I am a HUGE Diego fan, so I am going to think he wins every fight he has. The fight with Kampman however was different, I saw Diego winning one round in that fight, maybe (by a very fucking small as margin) he could have won the second. It just happened to be another Garcia thing where the Judges are like wow that Diego kid is throwing for the fucking fences. I think Damage should play apart in the judging as well. I don’t give a damn if you landed 15 punches against my 7 when my 7 punches have you dripping blood allover the place.

It was a close fight, but I don’t think one round of dominance should give you the win in a ten point must system (see: Machida/Rampage). Could’ve been scored a draw without bothering me, though.

The sheer stupidity that is Diego Sanchez’s title ambitions were DDT’d through 10 tables by kampmann, Martin won that fight and unfortunately for him is 0-2 where he could be 1-1.
I had Diego winning the fight too.

"No person can disobey reason, without giving up his claim to be a rational creature." - Swift
i knew Diego was gettin his hand raised.
for 2 main reasons: 1. his pushing forward aggressiveness and 2. takedowns.
Personally, I think Kampmann won the fight because helhanded more strikes and avoided Diego’s. Judges like to look at someone throwing reckless aggressive punches (regardless of how/if they land, hence why Leonard Garcia gets these undeserved wins.
Fighting solves everything.
Takedowns??? He got 1. One single takedown out of 17 attempts.

Edgar and Kongo were only losing for a few minutes before they staged their comebacks. Stephens, Lowe, and Coenen were deep in their fights when they rallied, but they still had time on the clocks. Diego’s was the most impressive. He lost the first 15:00 of the fight, but shocked the world when he won the fights three minutes after it had ended.

Now I can see why you had Diego winning. Coenan had no clue how to get out of the mount, even resorting to trying to grab Liz’ armpits with her feet! That was a grappling slobberknocker, a la Beerbohm-Healy.

I have to say I really enjoyed the Healy – Beerbohm fight, it was fast-paced with lots of scrambles ‘n stuff. I don’t think it’s a super great comparison to Coenen – Carmouche, which was much more onesided. I didn’t like that one (Coenen – Carm) very much, it was so apparent that neither were elite level fighters. My lasting memories are Carmouche having a helpless Coenen mounted and throwing the weakest looking punches I’ve ever seen. It was pretty nice though that she got the triangle in the end.

Diaz-Daley doesn't belong here, imo
How can you comeback when you were doing the majority of the attacking? Daley landed 2 clean shots while Diaz landed hundreds. Now if Daley had comeback to win- that’s a comeback, but I thought that Diaz was dominating outside of the 2 knockdowns.

Well that's the problem.
You can’t look at it “outside of the two knockdowns”. Diaz was knocked clean out and ended up coming back from the land of wind and ghosts to win.

The “draw the shit out of you” made me laugh.
But considering the circumstances of Edgar coming to the brink of losing the belt, and then not only surviving but retaining the belt.. that’s a pretty damn impressive comeback.
And it raised Edgar’s stock more than if he had just won a UD ‘cause it showed the insane amount of heart this guy has. The fake he didn’t win that decision is troubling, but he did enough to keep his belt
I completely disagree with the fact that a draw did more for his stock than if he would have won the decision.
I was a great performance no doubt about it. If he wins the trilogy fight convincingly (which I think he will) then it will really make him the man without any doubt.

I can see why a lot of people would disagree, but for me, I didn’t think much of Edgar before seeing him tested like that. I had Melendez ranked (San Jose bias) over Edgar before that performance.
While he did not win the fight, he cameback from a lot more than being rocked twice.
btw Edgar and Melendez will be awesome when it finally happens.

I hate everyone not voting for Frankie in this poll.
The stakes in that fight were much greater than they were in the Barry/Kongo fight, and if you ask me, in Frankie’s case, anything other than a loss for him was a win after that first fight. I also felt that he won every round other than that first one, so ….. the judges.
Hell, even Coenen/Camouche was a better comeback but of course they won’t win, because they’re women.

A draw for a defending champ is like a loss
It means you’re content only to hold onto your belt, not vanquish your opponent. It should probably be on the fight of the year poll, but a comeback? He lost a round, shook out the cobwebs, and went on to salvage a tie. Meh.

If not for that, it’d be a easy Kongo then Coenen vote for me.
i voted diaz/daley
but kongo-barry has the same vibe, we’ve got plenty of amazing comebacks this year
I gotta go with Kongo-Barry
It’s not like Kongo just threw one punch. he had to survive long enough to have that chance. Like Edgar, he showed huge amounts of heart in continuing to go on instinct and hang on despite being knocked down multiple times.
Unlike Edgar, he didn’t just get a draw, he knocked his opponent out.
Agreed.
I think the best part of that whole sequence for me was just before the KO, Kongo was bobbing & weaving off of his knees. For some reason that really struck a chord, and he showed a great ability to keep his cool under intense, intense pressure.
It’s one thing to have a lightweight bombing on you (Edgar/Maynard – And definitely not taking taking anything away from Frankie’s awesome performance), but when you have a 230+ pound high level striker in berserker mode and you can still keep your wits about you, that’s some comeback-of-the-year shit right there.

Kongo came back after flopping like a fish to getting a no-extra-shots-needed KO 5 seconds later.
Which was more exciting? 4 more rounds of steady comeback? Or a KO 5 seconds after fighting for your life?

I am seeing that Kongo vs Barry or Edgar vs Maynard II are the top two, and it looks like Coenen vs Carmouche is third. Three of the fights on the list: Heun vs Almeida, Diaz vs Daley and Sanchez vs Kampmann, don’t really come off as comebacks to me as they were pretty competitive and back-and-forth at times.

I think the reactions at the time tell the tale
When Edgar somehow survived the first round, the announcers and the comments during the live blog were along the lines of “That guy is one tough son of a bitch!” As the fight wore on, everyone was saying stuff like, “Edgar is getting his second win…shaking off the early setback….heart of a champion…” etc. etc. At the end, everyone agreed Frankie had shown incredible toughness, stamina, and courage in salvaging a draw from what appeared a certain defeat.
But Kongo? He got rocked once and appeared to be heading for a KO defeat. But he righted himself, to the amazement of all, only to be rocked yet again. Surely this time he was done for…why, even the ref started to jump in to stop the slaughter that would have occurred had his opponent been allowed to continue to beat a fighter who was clearly almost unconscious and virtually defenseless. But no! Not Kongo! Lazarus would have said, “No fuckin’ way!” Rogan did an audible spit take. The fans went berserk. The comments (read the live blog if you doubt this) were split between “Holy Fuck!” and “Holy Shit!” The announcer screamed, “A dead man walking, was Kongo!” The next day, the recaps and analyses were uniform in saying, “Maybe the greatest comeback in history….whatever’s in second place isn’t worth mentioning!”
I think that settles that. Time has a way of dulling our recollections, of making that ugly first girlfriend the most beautiful thing that ever broke your heart, and of giving credit where once it wasn’t given. And so, some will revise history and recall fondly how little Frankie Edgar once showed the heart of a man twice is size, all the while ignoring that a man twice his size showed even more heart. In the Greatest Comeback of this or any year. I give you: Komeback Kongo, the Komebackingest Kid!
