Video: Kim Couture Gets Choked Unconscious by Sheila Bird
Randy Couture's ex-wife, Kim Couture, fought again this past Friday and the finish was a gruesome thing to watch. She fought Sheila Bird on AX Combat 1, and "Sugar Free" got choked unconscious by leg scissors in less than 2 minutes.
Kim has now lost two in a row, and has dropped her overall professional record to 3-5. What's most notable on this bout though, was the incompetency of the referee. Kim was clearly out moments after the leg scissors was locked in, but the referee still let the fight go on. By the time it was stopped, Couture had been stuck unconscious on the choke for at least 10 seconds, and it took about a minute before Couture regained her consciousness.
Things have to change, as it is incompetent officiating like this that severely risks a fighter's health, and could lead to permanent damage or even death.
Check out the video below to see for yourself.

I counted 12 seconds.
That’s horrific. I’m not sure if the scissors is a vein or windpipe choke, but either way, that could (if I’m right, which I’m usually not) kill someone. Absolutely horrifying referee.

Damages being?
While I agree that he is completely incompetent and should never ref another fight, I don’t see charges going anywhere.

Agreed.
Charges may go nowhere, but that man should never be in charge of anyone’s life, and should be, at the very least, heavily fined for this.

Lingchi was reserved for crimes viewed as especially severe, such as treason and killing one’s parents.
Damn, I can dig it for folks who kill their parents, but treason? They did not fuck around when it came to country loyalty!
Also, that picture is pretty sick, but definitely not a thousand slices. They must have eased up a bit towards the modern ages.

This is infinitely worse
Now, this torture of the boats is as follows. Two boats are taken, which are so made as to fit over one another closely; in one of these the victim is laid, flat upon his back; then the other is laid over the first and carefully adjusted, so that the victim’s head, hands, and feet are left projecting, while the rest of his body is completely covered up. Then they give him food to eat, and if he refuse it, they force him to take it by pricking his eyes. After he has eaten, they give him a mixture of milk and honey to drink, pouring it into his mouth, and also deluge his face with it. Then they keep his eyes always turned towards the sun, and a swarm of flies settles down upon his face and hides it completely. And since inside the boats he does what must needs be done when men eat and drink, worms and maggots seethe up from the corruption and rottenness of the excrement, devouring his body, and eating their way into his vitals. For when at last the man is clearly dead and the upper boat has been removed, his flesh is seen to have been consumed away, while about his entrails swarms of such animals as I have mentioned are clinging fast and eating. In this way Mithridates was slowly consumed for seventeen days, and at last died.

That was certainly gruesome. I think the ref was distracted, or from the angle he was standing at perhaps we was starring at something else. Either way that is awful reffing, and it’s not funny to see stuff like that happen.
I don’t think we should blame Kim’s talent on this one. That’s not to say she’s a top tier WMMA fighter, but this negligence has nothing to do with her level of skill in the cage or in the ring.

She was choked for about 10 seconds after going out.
She starts showing the first signs of going out (legs going limp) at about 2:08-2:09 (video time, not round time) and the ref stoped it at 2:18-2:19. He din´t even check her arm until about 2:16-2:17, which meant she was unconsious for eight or nine seconds before the ref even bothered checking if she was ok. He should have checked on her the second she started going limp from the scissor choke and then stoped the fight. The ref clearly looked like he was not quite sure what was going on and what he should do about it.

While the ref clearly did not do his job properly, lets keeps in mind that it would take significantly longer than 10 seconds for a choke to cause real damage. So talk of charges or other very severe penalty’s is absurd.
Someone getting punched in the face multiple times after the fighter is already out is much worse than this, this just looks bad but no harm is done, while in the former situation harm is done.

Bad reffing
Sweet sub. Straight Head Scissors, and even though Couture went out I wouldn’t cross my legs that way. I’d personally have my top leg go in front and over the bottom, not behind and under. Better squeeze plus more difficult to defend.
WTF was the ref waving at before breaking the fighters?????????

Does anyone know
how long a person’s brain can be deprived of oxygen before there’s a risk of permanent brain damage? Ten seconds certainly feels like a long time in the video, but how significant was the risk of serious injury created by this terrific reffing?
This comment is intended for entertainment purposes only. Any resemblence to the actual truth is entirely coincidental.
Around 3 minutes
The real issue is making sure they’re breathing and their heart’s pumping after the choke is let go. All refs should learn how to put fighters in the recovery / safety position after a fight ends by choke out or Knockout, remove the mouth guard and make sure the tongue isn’t obstructing the air way.
I don't think that's true. I was choked out by my embelical cord as a baby was "unresponsive" for about 5 minutes before they got my heart beating again.
I don’t think I have any brain damage….but I could be wrong.
I don't participate in MMA
but what possesses a fight to not tap when they are getting choked unconscious? Is it a macho thing?
Sometimes
Sometimes they don’t realise how tight the choke is or how quick they’re going out. Sometimes they think about tapping but go out before they do. It’s really down to the referee that’s the whole point of having one.
Sometimes you just don't feel yourself going out
I’ve been choked out a few times in practice over the years, and every time it was because I didn’t “feel” the choke taking effect. I just thought I was fighting the choke and hanging in there, and next thing I knew I was waking up on the floor.

I'm shocked no one has commented on how atrocious Kim's striking continues to be.
I’m more nervous she’ll have brain damage from getting her bell rung. Her first fight brought her like 3 broken bones in her face within the first minute of the fight. Her jaw was literally in pieces and she still can’t keep her hands up!
As soon as she came out for this fight, she charged the center, then stood there tentatively, a bit too high, kept her hands low, and was not even remotely aggressive. She didn’t even really swing.
It looked like the first 22+ minutes of Chael vs. A. Silva (/zing!).
The dude abides.
My guess is that he was looking at her eyes
trying to see if they were still alert, and that’s why he missed all the other signs. Either way a horrible job by any means.
Check out Maiquel Falcão KO yesterday in Brazil
Very late stoppage, awful ref too:
Be careful, my opponents - Junior "Cigano" dos Santos

If Kim is smart she’ll ride this for what she can, because the whole ultimate fighting thing isn’t happening. But her name could draw attention to sucky reffing.
