2011 Bloody Elbow Tournament of Bad: Sweet Sixteen Voting, Part Two
After a long and extensive process, esteemed colleague Brent Brookhouse and I are proud to bring you the 2011 Bloody Elbow Tournament of Bad, an idea from the local Chicago sports radio show, Boers and Bernstein. The concept is simple: compile a list of 64 of the worst things related to the sport of MMA and pit them against one another in an NCAA Tournament-style bracket. You, the readers, vote on each match up until we have our ultimate champion.
We kicked off the Sweet Sixteen yesterday in the Jon Hess and Art Jimmerson Regions. Polls will stay open for those matchups until midnight ET tonight. You can check out the full bracket here.
Today's matchups:
Harold Howard Region
(12) Aleksander Emelianenko competing with Hepatitis C vs. (16) Male fighters with tramp stamps
(3) Kazushi Sakuraba's right ear vs. (7) UFC's Youtube policy
Steve Jennum Region
(8) Cecil Peoples, in every form vs. (13) Tito Ortiz's postfight excuses
(2) Bob Reilly and the (lack of) regulation in NY vs. (3) "Never leave it in the hands of the judges"
Photos courtesy of Fight! Magazine, Susumu Nagao, Jeff Sherwood, Sherdog, Stephen Morrison, Youtube, Dave Mandel, Masa Fukui, Google Image Search, and MSPaint.
Voting after the jump. Polls close at midnight ET tomorrow.

I think Tito can pull the upset.....
As bad as Cecil is, he does get it right from time to time. However, I don’t think Tito’s credibility can ever recover from “I had a cracked skull” LOL!
Not douchey enough for a Kindle yet.
hhahahah thank you fagan for the oj picture

yup
in terms of being bad for a sport I don’t see an ear as an issue but keeping a majority of zuffa material off of youtube does not help at all.
it just makes me want to spit up

doesnt it also suck that the 131 prelims are airing on youtube
"I have smoked weed with alot of UFC champions" - Joe Rogan

No thats better than them being on facebook, they may even have a higher quality stream. But you try to put those same ufc prelims on youtube the next day they will be taken down.
I got the exact opposite
Let the fighters fight, let the referees ref, but dear God, don't let the judges judge.
I have the exact opposite

On a side note UFC 130’s PPV buys are (Meltzer):

Bob Reilly is a willfully misinformed idiot saying dumb shit about MMA. “Never leave it in the hands of the judges,” is parroted by actual informed members of the MMA community as if it’s acceptable, including actual judges, which is basically saying “it’s your fault for expecting be at all competent at my job.” That is far worse.

Couldn't agree more..
As much as some people hate it…the truth is, decision is an absolutely legitimate method of victory in combat sports. Trying to excuse poor judging as “well, you didn’t finish it…so what do you expect?” is annoying as hell to me.

Exaclty.
Bob Reilly isn’t actively damaging MMA, he’s only hindering the expansion of the business into one market. Don’t let it go to the judges talk has a tangible negative effect on the sport itself. Easy pick for me.

You guys make a good argument
But I voted for Reilly, and I have to disagree with the notion that he’s not actively damaging MMA. He is, at this moment, probably the most visible and vocal opponent of MMA in the country. He misses no opportunity to smear the sport to people who may not know any better, and because he’s the only politician who cares to talk about it, he gets many platforms to throw around his slanders. I think he absolutely harms MMA every time he opens his stupid mouth near a microphone.

Disagree
NLIITHOTJ is a very stupid claim, but one that isn’t necessarily taken seriously. Somebody saying that isn’t going to change the fight.
On the other hand, Bob Reilly has made the sport we know and love illegal to 20 million people. While he isn’t stopping it altogether, his personal hatred for MMA and his agenda to hurt the sport at all costs is worse in my opinion.

the “judges” comments are a form of justification of terrible officiating….how can any fan stand by that?
i agree with you.
as a fan who prefers a technically sound Fitching over a leather-slinging slobberknocker, I’m in the minority. What I’m saying is that this hackneyed idea of HAVING to finish fights is worse for the sport than Bob Reilly, because he’ll probably die soon but NLIITHOTJ won’t.
by POW on Jun 9, 2011 8:50 AM EDT up reply actions
but “judges” isn’t serious though. It’s simply a cliche to motivate fighters to work for a finish. Nobody is actually commanding a fighter to finish at all costs.
And as for justifying terrible officiating, that is a valid argument, but I think that falls under the “MMA Judging” category criteria.

Hep C is terrible and in my mind worse but
I’ve made it a point to never ever vote against male tramp stamps. Any man who gets one should have to have it removed with a rusty machete.

am i the only one
that doesn’t really care about NYC?
my understanding is that people in New York don’t really care about MMA that much. if they did, it would probably be legal by now, as eventually happened in ontario.
It’s legal in Jersey and Philly so they can have events right over the border.
yes, it’s disappointing, but this fantasy that being in MSG is the holy grail for the UFC is misleading.
“don’t leave it to the judges” on the other hand …. anything to do with judges gets my vote in this tournament.
