Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum Conference Call Live Updates
The UFC is hosting a conference call today at 2 p.m. ET to promote next week's Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum event. Scheduled to appear on the call are titular fighters Alistair Overeem (Strikeforce heavyweight champion) and Fabricio Werdum, who will be joined by Gina Carano and her opponent, Sarah D'Alelio.
Follow Mike Fagan on Twitter for live updates, and check back here after the call for a full recap of the proceedings.
Overeem and Werdum will complete the first round of the Strikeforce World Heavyweight Grand Prix, which kicked off all the way back in February. Carano hasn't competed in a mixed martial arts bout in over 22 months, losing by TKO to Cris "Cyborg" Santos for the vacant Strikeforce female 145-lb. title.
Scott Coker
-Gina Carano's medical clearance was revoked by doctor.
-Masvidal vs. Noons takes Showtime spot left open by Gina's departure.
-No determination on Sarah's spot on the card. Look to have news by the end of the day.
-Josh is going to be fine, and he'll be fighting in Texas on the 18th.
-We'll be reaching out to HDNet about replacing the fight on HDNet.
Alistair Overeem
-Since the Werdum loss, I've focused on myself. Worked on plan, backup plan, and backup backup plan for opponents.
-I like the challenges that lie in front of me. I never complain about a fight. I love to fight.
-I was ready three weeks ago.
- I like the idea of a ring, but I figure the cage is more safe. You can't fall out of it.
-Every professional fighter needs to take his environment into consideration and train in a cage.
-I do feel the Grand Prix is an opportunity to introduce myself to fans in the U.S., the world as the no. 1 heavyweight.
-I see the American market as the future. The Japanese market has some problems. The U.S. is the dominant place for MMA.
-This fight is going to be different. You're going to see a way more aggressive Overeem.
-Nothing's changed for me with Zuffa buyout. I heard about GSP/Diaz fight, but that fight has no relevance to my situation.
-If I win the tournament, I want to fight the UFC champ, Cain Velasquez.
Fabricio Werdum
-I'm looking for a Junior Cigano win so I can fight him. (I think, it's hard to hear Werdum with his accent/no translator.)
-June is my month (inaudible). I'm excited for this fight.
-In 2006, I was just about jiu-jitsu. Now I train in other discipline. I'm excited about this fight, guys.
-I haven't fought in a year. I like to fight four times in a year. I have a big surprise for everybody.

Reem by KO
I think Fabricio has let the victory against an over the hill and out of shape Fedor go to his head. Fabricio will get knocked back to reality.
That and he hasnt fought in like a year. Plus I dunno if Fedor is over the hill. He’s just finally facing top competition and bigger stronger guys with just as much knowledge for the fight game as himself. He’s only 34. He’s fighting a 40 year old champion next month.
by Spider_Vemon on Jun 7, 2011 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions
I’m not sure if over the hill is the right description, but I was much more shocked at the incredible slow speed Fedor had againsth Big Foot. The weight difference was an issue for sure, but Fedor’s speed was incredible slow for example when you look at his movement and especially his punches.
"No man dies for what he knows to be true. Men die for what they want to be true, for what some terror in their hearts tells them is not true."
Diff caliber of fighter he faced that night. one with reflexes as quick if not quicker than his own. I dont think hes slowing I think the level of comp is just improving. It happens. Its called evolution.
sorry, but I have to disagree completly. the evolution thesis is definitely right when considering a match with someone like Cain Velasquez, but I think Big Foot is not fast at all.
there’s such a huge speed difference in Fedor’s punches that night combined with the cruise missile like overhand right during his prime.
"No man dies for what he knows to be true. Men die for what they want to be true, for what some terror in their hearts tells them is not true."
fedor was never in range.
He was getting clipped from the outside and then got taken down.

Bigfoot is very underrated
We saw in the Arlovski fight that he isn’t slow by any means. Bigfoot was supposed to win by tapping AA’s fragile chin, not outboxing him. After recovering from the punch Mike Kyle landed, he wasn’t looking slow there, either.
In the Fedor fight, we saw a fast and powerful double that I can’t see being pulled off that smoothly by any other HW without a wrestling background (maybe Overeem with training). On the ground, he was really slick.

maybe I'm really too hard on Big Foot
but Fedor seemed so off in that fight. I thought Fedor was also too resistant in the Rodgers fight, but the Big Foot fight was atrocious to me. Just incredible slow and not sharp at all.
But you bring up some interesting points. Now I really want to watch it again. ^^

Can't think of any reason Valentijn vs Griggs has a main card spot
over Noons vs Masvidal since that fight creates a #1 contender for Melendez.
At first I thought maybe SF/Zuffa wanted to push the card as a completely heavyweight affair, but then they have Carano’s fight on it, so mixing in other weight classes has already been done.
The only thing I can think is that Overeem threw around some of his weight to get his brother on the card.
reserve fights for the GP same with monson and cormier
by Papercut Elbow on Jun 7, 2011 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions
True, it is a HW GP reserve fight, but its between two low/mid tier HWs, and its not guarenteed either will actually be in the tourney. I don’t think that alone is enough reason to put it over a #1 LW contender fight which is a definite thing. Just seems like bad marketing of the fighters and future bouts.
Came here to say just this
Put Bizzarro-Overeem and Muttonchops on HDNet, and let me see Noons Masvidal. I am furious that I might miss that fight to see those two ham-and-eggers go at it.

Upsetting. Putting up this conference call announcement falsely gives hope that we'll be able to listen to that call
Why don’t you either live update the call on this page or just have the results after?

From Mania's live updates
Scott Coker opens the call by stating that Gino Carano failed a medical examination and will not be on the card. KJ Noons vs Jorge Masvidal will be promoted to the main card. Gina expects to fight later this year.

That blows. But, happy Jorge/Noons will be on the main card where it belongs. Hopefully they can put Gina on the same card as Cyborg later this year.
Initiative comes to thems that wait.

I don’t have the audio recorded, but I was on the call, and don’t remember Coker saying “Gino” was going to fight later this year. If anything, it was very open-ended.

werdum is not going to be able to pull guard against overeem
so his wrestling better be up to snuff.
very, very interesting fight.
Swollen head syndrome. In this case brought on from his ‘recent’ win over Fedor and having aleady beaten Overeem.
The cure? He takes his lumps from Overeem and gets plenty of time to think about overlooking opponents while on medical suspension.

what does that look like? Does he come into the cage riding a lion and wielding a machete?

My god, Alistair did a Hard Gay impersonation?
I love Japan.
if Overeem is the last man standing when this thing is over [and of course, depending on how it ends], there might be a pretty good case for having Overeem face the UFC Champ if he wins. if not, the tourney winner can face him and then get a shot at the UFC beltholder.
