Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Mundials 2011 - Cris 'Cyborg' Santos Gets Gold
Edited and Promoted to the Front Page by Anton Tabuena
At the 2011 Mundials, held this past weekend, female MMA fighter Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos brutalized her way to a gold medal in the Female Heavyweight Purple Belt division.
Competing under the name Cristiane Justino, and representing the Atos team under Andre Galvao, Cyborg showed the dominant positional control, power and speed she is known for in her MMA bouts on her way to gold. Plus she threw a bunch of people on their heads.
It's one way to keep busy I suppose, while Strikeforce's new owners figure out what to do with her.
Check out the video after the jump.

Slams, takedowns and supplex. Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t these more wrestling techniques than jiu jitsu techniques? I thought these jiu jitsu competitions were more about getting subs rather than simply brute-forcing your way to victory.
takedowns score points also.
so, while subs and passes help, “brute forcing your way” will still work.

Doesn’t it take away from the whole jiu jitsu martial art if you can have a strong person with just enough jiu jitsu knowledge not to get caught to win this whole thing? I’m not saying that’s the case with Cyborg here, but generally, if you can use another sport (wrestling) to win at this other sport competition (jiu jistsu), what does that say about your sport?
It's grappling
Judo takedowns work well with a gi. Wrestling can work too. Ultimately, it all falls under grappling.
I personally think of it as gi and no-gi based takedowns instead of going “That’s a Judo TD!” or “That’s a wrestling TD!”
Cyborg was able to exploit her opponent’s lack of no-gi based TD’s.
The sport is evolving. The younger, up-and-coming competitors are being exposed to a wider array of techniques than ever before. In turn, the level of competition will rise.

Sure, but it’s not called Grappling Mundials 2011, it’s alled BJJ Mundials 2011. That’s all I was referring to.
BJJ is about what works
they aren’t going to make a 100% effective takedown illegible because its not something that can be traced back through to Kodokan Judo. A takedown is a takedown is a takedown.
This is a great point:
The sport is evolving. The younger, up-and-coming competitors are being exposed to a wider array of techniques than ever before.
As more and more competitors cross-train between wrestling, judo, BJJ, etc., the various grappling disciplines are going to continue to look more and more similar, until eventually they only have minor differences catering to the different rulesets.
In a few years I wouldn’t be surprised to see the various disciplines all superseded by a unified “submission grappling” ruleset that looks something like ADCC championship rules.

All it says is that the arts are similar. Nothing negative here at all.
And she won because she trains BJJ every day with a world champion.

the whole BJJ > strength thing only works when the strong fighter doesn’t know any BJJ. When you have two equally (or its close) skilled opponents factors like strength, speed and other athletic qualities can be the difference. Its why the competitors at mundials spend so much time getting in top shape.
And there was plenty of technique in what Cyborg did, her guard passes were excellent and those takedowns where excellent. She is a legit purple belt, its the Mundials you have to be legit to win a match there much less medal.
you didn't know?
no technique or skill, all wrestlers do is weight lift all day long so they can be the strongest.
/sarcasm
Takedowns score points.
But generally speaking you’re right, they aren’t normally the deciding factor in these bouts, which it appears was the difference for Cyborg.
It takes great work and thinking to keep from doing work.

More there than brute force
Cyborg is using a lot of wrestling based takedowns, however, there is still plenty of technique there.
0:05 — she’s got a better angle on her opponent. Her opponent is too upright, but that’s likely because she can’t get under Cyborg. Opponent pulls guard.
0:12 — Great position by Cyborg. She is squared up to her opponent. Opponent’s hips are facing out and away at an angle — very limited options for her opponent in terms of recovering position or mounting any offense. I think her opponent’s best bet was to dive for a kneebar. Cyborg brings her outside leg in and around while exploding up and through for the TD.
0:30 — Good enough single leg.
1:00 — Bodylock to TD, but watch her HIPS. She gets her opponent leaning forward, then blasts up and around with her hips for the TD. It’s about balance disruption, then momentum.
1:27 — Same as 0:12, possible alternate view.
1:38 — Tricep is grabbed for control, followed by a somewhat lateral drop, bring her opponent’s balance and momentum forward. Cyborg rolls through it for the takedown to scarf position.
Just because you don’t understand the techniques you are seeing doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

Sure, sure, I never meant to imply that she doesn’t have technique. I realize that’s what saying “brute-force your way to victory” would imply. All I meant was that I was surprised that her main way to victory here was ragdolling her opponents using her sheer strength more-so than with technique normally associated with BJJ, namely subs, passing guard and getting into dominant positions.
Most of her takedowns land her in dominant position
If you never have to pass guard in the first place, so much the better.

Take downs are typically 2 points. The rest takes place on the ground. BJJ uses all sorts of methods for take downs, mostly Judo techniques, but once on the ground tue discipline takes over.
And slams happen all the time in BJJ, some can be illegal, but it is a great way to pass guard or escape a triangle. Ask Rampage.
Initiative comes to thems that wait.

a great way to pass guard or escape a triangle.
not really. you have to just stupid strong to pick someone up when they have a fully locked triangle and slamming them normally doesn’t do anything but tighten the choke and tire you out. again just ask Rampage and how slamming Sakuraba without end worked out.
Or if they hook the leg the whole thing becomes moot anyway
(and you often end up sweeping yourself).

jii jitsu comps
Are about winning according to the rules given, just like judo or wrestling competitions. Fortunately, bjj hasn’t gone the route of making alot of techniques illegal because they make “traditional bjj” look bad. It seems much more appropriate to absorb new and useful techniques and grow as an art. That’s what makes MMA so awesome to me, if something doesn’t work in a trial by fire, it’s adapted or discarded. That all being said, having an awesome takedown game is great for bjj, and if that’s all it took for her to win her division, good on her.

rec'd look at Judo
its getting ruined by the Japanese making all the things that beat Japanese Judoka’s illegal.
Let's be fair
All of the 2010 changes that really crapped up things like leg grabs came from European member. The Japanese haven’t made huge changes in decades. The quick standups, no leg attacks, and faster pins (I’m actually a fan of the 25 second pin) all came from European sponsors. The main things the Japanese had changed were pushing for a few throws to be illegal, like the waki-gatame and kani basami. And of course the Rampage-style daki age. That was a long while ago, and probably are for the best. The pussyfying of competitive Judo has come from the west, not the east.
Standing Wakigatame...
was how Aoki broke that guy’s arm, right? Keith something or other…

Pretty much
It’s rough in Judo. You have to be very careful about falling onto an opponent in a position like that. I had to disqualify (from the whole damn tournament) a 12 year old that did it on accident. Some head refs are jerks.
Reminds me of K-1 and making the two handed thai clinch illegal

cris is a beast
ladies mma would be much more fun to watch if we a had a dozen more girls as tough as she is…
Yeah
She’s just so far ahead of her time. Someone said it was like GSP or someone going back to UFC 1 or something. She’s on a completely different level.
maybe in UFC Undisputed 4...
… they will allow for time travelling. That would be ultra-freaking-cool!!!
We could have that Fitch vs. UFC 1 Royce match from The Week in Quotes thread....

Its a damn shame
that Strikeforce is unable or unwilling to find matches for Cyborg
Forget the fact that she’s a woman, she’s one of the Strikeforce’s most dominant, exciting champions.
And for whatever reason, the promotion refuses to showcase her
That’s a bloody shame
by devious1 on Jun 7, 2011 8:22 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
You had it right the first time.
There’s just so little competition out there, especially at that weight class.
And nobody wants any part of the baddest woman on the planet.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the winner of Julia Budd vs Germaine de Randamie gets a shot at Cyborg even though they are terribly inexperienced. It just goes to show how shallow that particular female weight division is.

Am I wrong to wish to see Cyborg face a man in a featherweight fight? I honestly wonder how she’d do against a middle of the pack featherweight like Korean Zombie or Leonard Garcia. I know Cyborg’s strong, but is she strong for a woman, or is she as strong as some of the men? And she can take a punch from a woman like Finney, but can she take a well-placed punch from a man? There’d be huge risks in setting up such a fight, what if Cyborg gets crushed in under a minute? But still, I’d like to see it!
No commission would sanction it and Zuffa would never do it
But I’ve heard men who have sparred with Cyborg say they think she could be competitive. Not against Jose Aldo or Chad Mendes or anything, but at least with some of the mid-level featherweights.

I saw his fight and everyone who said that was full of crap.

No mention of Benson Henderson's performance
Bronze at brown belt is no small feat, especially for someone who fought just about a month ago
has anyone found video of this yet?

Found video of his quarterfinal match
It’s not from the budovideos feed, but its a pretty good shot from the audience. He armbars someone from guerilla jiu jitsu, I’d link but I’m on my phone…. first result if you search “Ben Henderson mundials” on YouTube though.

Kind of off subject
But I’m equally impressed with her English.

Are there weight classes?
The second girl Cyborg fights seems much bigger than the other competitiors.
Regardless, Cyborg’s a beast and I like her more for having watched this video.
The dude abides.
After a certain weight – 163 lbs for women – the category does not have a maximum weight limit. It’s why Gabrielle Garcia often fights women who are nearly 80 lbs lighter than she is.

Don't give a damn what anyone says
Gabby is not of this world. Especially after she dropped the fat and added like 80 lbs of muscle. 6’4, 265 lbs. is insane.

I thought she was more like 235 or 240. But that’s still NFL linebacker size – even if not as much muscle.
What’s special about her is that there are a couple of women in the sport who are nearly as large as she is, but nowhere near as good in technique. She’s got at least one of the two decisively in her favorite against any woman on the planet. I don’t see her losing for a long, long time.
And I recall a Russian-American forum member over on InStrength admitting he had a huge crush on her. So funny.
