Normally I never complain about fighters pay...
but $10,000 for Pettis is ridiculous. I don’t care if he’s on his old contract, they should have given him a new one. He was pretty much the main draw in that card.
why is it ridiculous it was his first fight in the ufc with guida (who was the draw for this whole event)
i like pettis but he isnt ufc top 10 caliber he gets owned by any real talent but there is some cool fights they can give him

why do you have Charles Oliveira as a muay thai wrecking machine??? lol

idk
maybe because although he’s won more fights by subs, his mt standup is really impressive to me.

Ok
1. It’s not hype if the guy has legit talent
2. Even if it was hype, how can it be derailed by losing to an incredibly safe strategy and shoulder thrusts?

just give up pettis got derailed by guida he looked like shit no tdd at all
the fact that people thought he would beat edgar or maynard lol

right
A 23 year old fighter who has demonstrated improvement from fight to fight, is in a great camp and has great in-fight instincts will never be shit. I agree that people who thought that he was going to come in and take a belt from Edgar/Maynard were off base, but you are just as off base as them. You’re spouting some bush league, Sherdog forum bullshit. Why don’t you go over there with your brethren.

It was a closer fight than people are giving it credit for.
I scored it a draw. I know Matt Roth scored it 29-28 for Pettis.

Just curious, but how did you score Miguel Torres vs Demetrius Johnson? I’m assuming you’re scoring Guida vs Pettis a draw on the offense from Pettis from the bottom.

I thought Miguel won his fight and while the Pettis fight was close I don't think you can give Anthony more than one round

I scored the Torres/Johnson fight
for Torres, although I was rooting for Johnson. I wouldn’t have been surprised either way for the winner, but since judges give the top guy the advantage 99.9% of the time I was leaninng on Johnson to be given the nod.

I didn't pay close enough attention to the Torres/Johnson fight honestly.
I scored Rd 1 of Guida/Pettis 10-10, Rd 2 for Pettis and Rd 3 for Guida. I get why Guida won and have no issue with it, though.

he was co-main event (more of a draw than main event)
it might have been his first UFC fight, but he’s had a lot of WEC fights, he’s the last WEC champ and he was on sports channels that barely covered MMA because of his last fight. He’s a massive draw & should be given more than the bottom of the barrell fighters. Hell even the guys from TUF who lost only made $2K less than him.
by YPG on Jun 6, 2011 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions
for that card he was. Casual fans have seen him on sports channels after the kick against Bendo. Sure, Guida was probably the biggest name, but Pettis was second. And with TUFs awful ratings I don’t think many people tuned in because of Nijem or Ferguson

Real talent = hugging for dear life and…shoulder thrusts, ok makes sense. If that’s the case then he’s the most talented man out there outside of Fitch.

Exactly, it's mma, NOT WRESTLING
As for the K-1 argument, I love great jiu jitsu contests in MMA, but watching someone be on top & not do anything is annoying.

I was watching DREAM F4J right before I watched TUF Finale
In one of the DREAM fights I heard Schiavello say something along the lines of “just laying on top and maintaining position isn’t gonna win you a fight here in Japan”.
I wish the same could be said for fights in the USA.
by Chris P. Bacon on Jun 6, 2011 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions
For the record
I have ZERO problems with wrestlers, it’s when a wrestler gets his guy on the ground or against the cage and is completely content with just fucking around and “staying busy” and playing safe that’s annoying, ESPECIALLY when it’s against an exciting fighter. I had no problem with the Chael/Anderson fight, because Chael was REALLY staying busy and took it to Andy even though I was rooting for Andy. I didn’t really have a problem with Fitch/Penn in the 3rd because Fitch was actually doing something. Guys like Brock who look to fuck shit up or even GSP who regularly passes guard and constantly lookes to improve his position. I love seeing guys like Maia, Jacare, or even Mir (can’t stand his personality) take a guy to the ground and looks for the finish. What I can’t stand is a boring ass gameplan with the only danger that the fighter on his back is looking to get is a fucking shoulder to his neck/chin area.
And I’m not calling Guida boring at all, but that gameplan/strategy Saturday night was doo-doo, it worked and all and more power to him, but it was rather tame and boring for my tastes.

you can be honest
You didn’t mind because A.Silva pulled out the W, oyhereise you would be butthurt like you are about Pettis losing.
As fans of Pettis, how do you not see that saying his opponeny is shit makes hik look worse than shit. He got beat by a Guida.who was.game and took.the fight.to Pettis and stayed active in the guard.
credit Pettis for making the fight boring by nullifying Guida’s.offense by being active enough with great wrist control and crappy sub attempts. If Pettis had hugged Guida and stalled, he would have got the standup that some of yu think he deserved.
by wrxdonkey on Jun 6, 2011 2:31 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Um I am being honest
I mean yeah I wouldn’t have liked it at all if Andy had lost, but I mean Chael did stagger Silva twice in the first round and pummeled (I guess that works) while he was on top. But I mean if Andy had lost, at least it wouldn’t have been due to shoulder thrusts and…yeah I guess that’s about it that he would’ve lost to.
“If Pettis had hugged Guida and stalled, he would have got the standup that some of yu think he deserved.” If Pettis had hugged Guida? What a sad sad state of mma that we are in where to counter a hug you have to hug back, lol. And I never said that my boy Pettis deserved a standup, all I’m saying is that the gameplan utilized by Guida and company was horribly lame, safe, and sad. Anything for a win I guess…

I always feel that “fucking around and "staying busy" and playing safe” is more to training for the judges of MMA and “playing the game.” I mean, what’s the point of Pettis being offensive from the bottom if he’s just going to lose the round anyway? Pettis mine as well just have lied there. I do feel that in a way, it really is detrimental to the sport of MMA. It’s also this fight that makes me want upkicks to a ‘downed’ (on his knees) opponent to be legal as it seems that the fighter on the bottom is already at a disadvantage on the scorecards, so having another strong tool to use would really help fighters on the bottom.

Yeah I agree, wrestlers have a distinct advantage with the current rule set.

I'm surprised that he didn't make more...
and for not having a title escalator in his contract, but that was his 1st Zuffa deal. It’s like baseball players before being arbitration eligible- his next contract will be based on what he’s demonstrated, I don’t see what the big deal is.

sure
one of the big deals about the wec/ufc merger was how the wec talent was finally going to get paid. that is clearly not the case.

Danny Downes’ payday. I know he’s nothing special, but to be making HALF of what the TUF rejects made?? That shit’s criminal.

What's ridiculous about earning what you signed to earn?
Their finances are their own business.
I make less in an entire year, working 2000+ hours, than most UFC fighters make in base pay from one or two 15 minute fights. I don’t get bonuses for being good at my job and no one pays me to hold their terrible energy drinks or wear their ugly shirts. I don’t hear anyone complaining I don’t make enough, nor do I need anyone to, since when they said, “We’ll pay you $x per hour to work for us, will you accept?”, I said, “Yes.” No one is forcing me to do what I do and no one is forcing them (except maybe Fedor’s manager).
What makes these guys so special we care if they become millionaires or not? Because we like to watch them get punched in the face?
by d.rok on Jun 6, 2011 2:44 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
More money in the sport
means that more people will attempt to become fighters and we will see better MMA fighters. That the time costs associated with being a fighter are much more then 15 minutes in the cage. There is also all the hours they put in training, do strength and conditioning, promoting the bout. Plus you have to pay your manager, training partners, agents and trainers.
If you fight three times a year and win two out three you at an 8 and 8 contract you will have made a gross pay of $40,000. Once you deduct all the costs I mention above, you’re not left with a lot of money. I know “no one told them to be a fighter” but still, I enjoy watching MMA and I want these guys to make enough money to live off of.

When you see a true GnP KO, especially from full guard they need to reward that shit.

While we’re at it, whats up with billing the main event as Pettis vs Guida and then the night of the event have it play second fiddle to the TUF finale? That just rubs me the wrong way.
Looking at the poster in this article
If I didn’t know any better I’d think Guida vs Pettis is actually the finale..

I understand that their pay all involves contracts, experience of said fighter etc., but for my boy Pettis to only make 2 stacks more than Chuck is kinda depressing :(

Damn, how are these ex WEC guys eating?
It’s no wonder Danny Downes had to take a fight outside the UFC, four grand a fight?
Why do TUF runner-ups make the same as the two guys in the finals (and the winner)? Ferguson should be making more than the rest of them.

Sucks Pettis lost. Sucks worse he wasn't paid more for the loss.
It’s gross that his sponsorships liekly paid him a shit ton more than the UFC on this one.
10k per fight, 3 or 4 fights per year = like 40k for an average fighter before fees
Do they make THAT much off endorsements? Because that defintely doesnt seem like enough money to be a full time professional fighter.

Roop got paid less than Shamar and Clay?
Roop has already fought in the WEC several times and i think in the UFC once as well.
I’m not saying he is good, but that makes no sense.
