LNF 20: TUF 13 Primer: Duran v Hyatt. Maldonado v McSweeney. Anthony Pettis Headkick KO. Clay Guida vs Gilbert Melendez.
Bloody Elbow is the premier MMA community, and it is because every single user brings something to the table whether in the form of humerous banter or expert knowledge in a one of the martial arts. Being a huge fight fan, i believe this is my contribution to the BE community. LATE NIGHT FIGHTS as a series was created in order to highlight great classics and those fights that are often cited but rarely seen as well as the past, present and future legends of MMA in their early non UFC or non MMA bouts. - KJJ
For todays TUF 13 Primer we have a nice lineup for you, First off we have undercard fighter Reuben Duran. Duran most recently lost a close split decision to Takeya Mizugaki. Tonight he fights the person he replaced in the Mizugaki bout; Francisco Rivera who is not a portmandeu of the 2 NY closers but a 5-1 fighter whose only loss is to Erik Koch. This is Duran's fight in KOTC against Kana Hyatt.
Reuban Duran 6-2-1
Kana Hyatt 7-6
Next up we have Fabio Maldonado, a useful bit of trivia is Maldonado has a 22-0 career boxing record. Alas, a quick visit to BoxRec reveals Fabio's career like most early boxers with big records, reveals lots of can crushing. Here he puts his iron chin and good technical boxing (im a big body shot fan and the shot that buckles McSweeney is fantastic) against James McSweeneys flashy arsenal of kicks. The embed code isnt working very well so i put the direct link right below it. If you havent seen this fight its very worth a look, a cult favorite of mine.
Fabio Maldonado 17-3
NW: Maqiel Falcao X2, Vitor Vianna X2
NL: Alexandre Ferriera
James McSweeney 4-5
NW: Darrill Schoonover
NL: Mostapha Al-Turk, Travis Browne, Ricardo Romero, Neil Grove

Next up we have the Man, the Myth, the High Flying Legend. Anthony Pettis and his flashy array of strikes. In fact the only word i knew from the Spelling Bee this week was Capoeira (thank you MMA!). Here he fights Mike Lembrecht in a fight that does not end well for Mike.
Anthony Pettis 4-0
Mike Lembrecht 6-5
NW: Joe Ellis
Finally, tonights LNF main event is a Strikeforce Leightweight title bout between reigning defending champion Clay Guida, and up and comer Gilbert Melendez.
Clay Guida 19-4
NW: Bart Palazewski, Josh Thompson
Gilbert Melendez 9-0
NW: Hiroyuki Takaya

Holy shit.
Look at Pettis’ shoulders after the standup (really stupid decision by the other guy, btw). They’re lopsided…he dislocated one of them and still won the fight.
I wasn’t so impressed with Fabio, he looked great in the second round after McSweeney ran out of steam and couldn’t execute his gameplan, but both his offense and defense in the first looked sub par. He got hit in the head far more often than a pro boxer should (good chin though) and couldn’t seem to close range.
ALSO holy shit.
How have I not seen that Guida-Melendez fight before? That’s one of the best 5 rounders I’ve ever seen. This is why lightweights should be more popular, I can’t wait to see El Nino take on Edgar or Maynard, and I can’t wait for the Guide fight tonight. Guy is incapable of being in a boring fight. Gilbert’s counter to the spinning back kick at 9:56 is a thing of beauty, and his tiger uppercut is just deadly.
