Ben Askren Calls Nate Marquardt 'Cheater' Vows to Crush Him in Bellator
Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren wasted no time in calling out fired UFC fighter Nate Marquardt today. Askren tweeted shortly after Marquardt admitted that issues with his use of Testosterone Replacement Therepy caused his failure to be cleared to fight for UFC on Versus 4.
Here's Askren's tweet:
@nathanmarquardt you are a cheater, not once but frequently. Stop cheating, come to bellator and I will crush you. @bjornrebney
Some will no doubt view this crass opportunism in a negative light, but it's genius fight promotion on Askren's part. Marquardt is the big story in MMA currently and was scheduled to make his welterweight debut in the UFC on Saturday. Now that UFC President Dana White has cut Marquardt, Nate the Great is suddenly by far the highest profile free agent in the division.
It's no secret that Bellator has a hard time finding quality, high profile opponents for its champions. Marquardt, should he sort out his licensing issues, would be both high quality and high profile. In fact, Askren -- an Olympic wrestler with a developing MMA game -- could very well be biting off more than he can chew in challenging Marquardt.

This is a brilliant promotional move, true, but I don’t think Ben is only promoting here. I think he’s serious. He hates cheaters, and I don’t blame him. I watch MMA to see who has the best methods, training, and talent not to see who has the best pharmacist.
I hope Nate stops taking his ‘roids and then fights Askren. I’d love to see a remarkably slower Marquardt get GnP’d into a bloody mess. And by the way… did you see how slow Carwin was against JDS now that he has stopped taking roids (due to the investigation of his dealer) Dropping the roids is what made him drop the weight. That whole diet thing was just a way to make it less obvious. I like Carwin as a person, and I used to root for him. But I was glad to see him look slow and get beat up by JDS. I now believe his dominating performances in the past were due in large part to his pharmacist. Cheater.
Wow, just a staggering amount of empty conjecture and assumptions in your post. Staggering. ering.
I especially liked “Dropping the roids is what made him drop the weight”, maybe I am wrong and you are actually living up Shane Carwin’s ass and have a "bird’s eye view: of the entire process, but it sure seems like you are just making some very big assumptions. Which of course makes you the ideal BE talk backer.

Ignorance is bliss.
The guy is practically unstoppable on the feet, dominating everyone he gets near, and then his ’roid dealer gets caught. Suddenly he gets smaller and slower and gets his butt handed to him on the feet in the next fight. Even you can figure that one out, noyesee.

You know… there’s also the argument that Dos Santos is just a much better striker. He is faster and more technical.
Also the fact that he just didn’t get popped for roids, that was YEARS ago. Research what you talk about before you start spewing non sense.
Sheeeeeeeee-it

I myself bet the Rebney himself asked Askren to hit Twitter and hit it hard.
I want to see Nate go through the entire tourney though. No f’n “superfight”, please.

Some might be tempted to look at Nate’s fights against Sonnen and Okami and pick Askren here, should the fight come to fruition. But the only reason Sonnen and Okami were able to successfully implement their wrestling was because both are also proficient in the other areas of MMA as well. Askren would no doubt hold a wrestling advantage over Nate, but Nate would hold a significant advantage in all other areas of MMA.
I’d pick Nate by domination. Askren would land a couple takedowns, but ultimately Nate would smash him to bits.
I haven't seen enough of Askren in the cage to have a strong opinion
But Nate would definitely be a quantum leap in the quality of competition he’s faced.

Every round starts on the feet. I think the difference in striking would be such that Nate wouldn’t need all that time to put Askren away.
Plus, I think the drop in weight is going to work out in Marquardt’s favor. He’s going to be stronger than he was at MW and he’ll have a bit easier time defending takedowns.
Stopping Ben Askren from taking you down is about as big a challenge as there is in MMA.
He’s going to get you down eventually, even it means doing unconventional tactics or moves for a wrestler.
yes sir
his “funky” style of wrestling is hard to get away from just as Hector Lombard and Dan Hornbuckle
I don’t think there are many fighters in the WW division who could stop Askren from taking them down. I certainly don’t think Nate Marquardt is one of them. I would be comfortable in picking Askren for an UD win.

Thank you! A very apt description, I must say.
by Horselover Fat on Jun 28, 2011 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions
They may not be able to stop the takedown, but they can get a good amount of strikes on Askren before getting taken down. Also, it’s not like it’s impossible to get back to your feet once Askren is on top. Lyman Good and Dan Hornbuckle have bad habits of staying on their back when taken down, and even Ryan Thomas showed that an opponent of Askren is able to get back to their feet once taken down.

Sure, I’m not saying Askren has this amazing suffocating top game. And of course I don’t think he would be able to finish Nate, so there would be at least five times in the fight were they were on their feet. What I am saying is that there is no way Nate would be able to stop him from getting taken down over and over again, for the whole fight. But you have a point that Nate is a dangerous guy and there is definitely a chance he could do some damage and possibly stop Askren at some point, especially considering how green Askren still is. I don’t disagree with that at all. In my estimation it’s basically 50/50, but if I had to bet money I would go with Askren. Especially if it happens in a year or two..

"You should work for 15 minutes to knock your opponent out, submit him, or improve your position to give yourself the best chance of doing either." - Dan Hardy
Mainly striking and the clinch. We’ve seen his deficiencies in the jits game time and time again, but this is a guy who held is own on the feet with Anderson Silva.
Sure, but watch the fight again. Silva didn’t look all that different from how he normally does. And Sonnen also had some success on the feet against Okami and Nate.
by dropkick101 on Jun 28, 2011 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
I thought that Silva looked a lot different in the standup against Sonnen. He honestly just looked downright sloppy. There was no lateral movement and very little head movement from Silva. To me and many of the people that watched that fight with me, Silva did not look like himself in the standup department.
Check out the C&D Channel on YouTube for MMA reviews, predictions, analysis, and other MMA related content.
I know
I’m just trying to explain that how Silva looked against Sonnen in the standup is not how he normally looks against other opponents. The poster above said that “Silva didn’t look all that different from how he normally does,” but there were things that Silva was not doing against Sonnen like head movement and whatnot that he normally does.
Check out the C&D Channel on YouTube for MMA reviews, predictions, analysis, and other MMA related content.
The rib
was broken in R1, but I think Anderson severely underestimated Sonnen’s stand-up and trained primarily defensive wrestling and BJJ for that fight.

Sonnen's striking is actually quite underrated.
He throws straight down the pipe, mixes in some low kicks… not bad at all, and it works very well with his wrestling. Outstruck Filho (not hard to do, admittedly) and Okami. Dude isn’t half bad standing.

he did absolutely zero damage the entire fight. all he did was hug okami most of the fight. i’m not sure he landed a single punch standing.
but this is a guy who held is own on the feet with Anderson Silva.
LOL! Kinda… and most of that was due to Silva having to be super focused on defending the takedown.

Still, my main point still stands: Chael Sonnen, despite relying heavily on his wrestling, is much more of a complete MMA fighter than Ben Askren, if only due to the fact that he has a decade and nearly 40 fights in the sport while Askren is still new.

At least in that he has serviceable stand up and Askren hasn’t shown to be that level their yet. However, I think Askren is lightyears ahead of Chael in Sub Grappling. Might be a wash.

Chael's failure to improve his submission defense is embarassing
but I agree that his striking is actually pretty solid. He’s not a KO threat, but he understands the striking game, and uses it to support his wrestling really well. What he did against Silva was incredibly impressive. I think Chael said he used to box Golden Gloves.

I’m saying if all Sonnen is proficient in, in terms of MMA skills, is LNP, then Ben Askren must also be a KO artist. I’m not trying to say that Sonnen is some sort of MMA prototype whose great at everything (that would be GSP). What I am saying is that the guy is a world ranked fighter whose competed with and beaten some of the very best in the world. Proficiency doesn’t mean he’s an expert; it merely means he’s, well, proficient in the other arts.
Nate’s striking is better but. I don’t know about BJJ, Askren is pretty damn good at jitz. He may not sub people in fights but I have rolled with Ben and he is no joke. Its like grappling with gumby.

Why assume Spike is the only alternative?
Bellator could end up on ESPN if ESPN decides to get in the MMA game big time. There are probably a number of other cable channels they could end up going to. No doubt MTV2 is the last stop on the train to Nowheresville, and Bellator would most likely hit the wall financially soon enough without live gates to sustain it, but I have to think they’re talking to other broadcasters (if they’ve got an out from their deal with MTV).

But I can’t fault Askren for trying here – he’s been vocal about wanting better opposition and this could be a golden opportunity. I’m not a huge Askren fan, but I like his cockyness. But Nate squashes these guys, 9/10 times.

I disagree
I think even in the fights Nate does win it’s competitive.

So wrong
You’re probably isolating like two or three fights instead of looking at his UFC career. Not even close, and I don’t see how this translates to how someone like Good would do against him. Rash generalizations.

9/10? You are as high as Nick if you think that
More like 6/10, and I would take Askren or Lombard over Nate all day…

Rick Hawn beat Lyman Good and Lyman Good has beaten noone of note. Nate was considere done of the best MW in the UFC and you think that he could beat Nate? Wow
So good he dropped to 170
Look, Nate is/was a serviceable fighter. He hasn’t looked good for a few fights now. In addition, non UFC guys tend to get deservedly underrated in the rankings. Guys like Hornbuckle are severely undervalued.

Dropping to 170 because you can’t beat Anderson Silva is very justifiable. And I would argue its the complete opposite when you are in a smaller organization because you get a nice streak beating cans. Seriously what has Lyman Good done that would give any suggestion he could beat Marquardt? Even Hornbuckle, while I think the fight would be entertaining what has Dan done that would warrant giving him the upper hand over Nate?
It's not about what they have "done"
Clearly Nate has a better resume. It’s about the talent they have shown and they way I feel they would match up with Nate stylistically.

Well I think the obvious lack of TDD that Lyman has shown makes it a pretty easy choice to pick Nate. Like I said I think a fight with Dan would be exciting but I don’t see him catching Nate in a submission from his back and I see Nate being able to get the TD there also, although I could see Dan winning maybe 2 of 10 fights.
Oh wow, this is getting sad
I like you, but d00d— you’re going off the deep end. He wasn’t forced to drop like a lot of guys, he decided to test his end.

I do to
Hornbuckle could handle Nate standing or grappling imo, Good would be a fun brawl with Nate possibly getting his lights cut out
If Nate did go into Bellator
And didn’t have to go through a tournament to get a title shot, I would be a little disapointed…I like how they have it set up right now.
No favorites, best man wins. No bones about it.
However, I do like what Askrens doing here. Drama is fun.

the Bellator tourney sucks, the quarterfinals are a waste of time. I can see why Askren wants this fight, he wants to fight more often & for more money & he’s in the wrong promotion to do that. Askren’s stuck in title contract hell.

Bellator is great.
Some people can’t appreciate an MMA fight if a top 25 fighter isn’t involved.
Learn JiuJitsu.
Which I can certainly understand for a "casual fan"
But for those of us who take time out of our day to comment on blogs specifically dedicated to MMA seems kind of foolish…
How can you not be interested in fresh prospects, especially in a featherweight division that’s just getting it’s start in the UFC? I mean, I’d be willing to bet a hefty sum that Dana and Co. are keeping an eye out for guys like Ronnie Mann, and Pat Curran to step up to the “big leagues” in the near future if Jose Aldo does what I think he’s going to do in that UFC featherweight division.

you hit the nail on the head
to step up to the "big leagues"by implying that Bellator isn’t there yet.

Of course they're not on the same level of Strikeforce or UFC today.
But that doesn’t mean they can’t be in the future. And doesn’t mean they don’t have that potential talent right now.

Subo's line of reasoning in his beef with Strikeforce is suddenly clear
They don’t have the potential right now because they don’t have the depth of talent. Yes they are building, yes they have potential to be number two in MMA promoting, but they said the same thing about Affliction: a few great fighters at the top of each division and it falls off dramatically after that. Its all economics really, but the tournament format is holding them back when only the winner of it can challenge for a title.

you're talking to the wrong person on that front
I’m not a fan of 8-man tourneys over 3 months. its a waste of time, energy & preparation for the fighters. The champion has to wait too long and ends up fighting a 3 round ‘super fight’ that means nothing & would diminish him if he loses, but not an immediate rematch for the guy who just beat the champ…its weak bush league stuff. I like that GP winner gets a shot, but why let your champ wait like that.
BTW I’ve written a lot about the fighters outside the top 25, sometimes WAY outside the top 25.

LHW and LW tournaments were compelling in there own rights.
I really enjoyed watching Christian M’pumbu knock out four guys with a 20 lb weight advantage on his way to collecting that check.
Eddie Alvarez is probably the best fighter not under the Zuffa umbrella, and he is more than content in his situation, so that will always be compelling stuff.
One thing I definitely agree with you is the “Superfights” but it’s also a great way to keep fighters active when they’re not defending there belt. What other options would you suggest they pursue?
It takes great work and thinking to keep from doing work.

easy
Let Alvarez, Lombard or Askren fight an available top guy in a 5 round title fight. I just don’t understand the reasoning behind a 3 round super fight…its not that super.
Its awesome the winner gets a shot but its 6 freaking months down the line before there’s a title fight.

You do though...
I just don’t understand the reasoning behind a 3 round super fight…its not that super.
Because:
The champion has to wait too long
The Bellator tourney system isn’t perfect, because they need to keep their champs active somehow. The way they establish number one contenders is the correct way IMO…tournament style, best man fights the champ. How they chose to use their champs in between fights is a completly different matter entirely, and one that obviously could use some tweaking.
It takes great work and thinking to keep from doing work.

The Bellator tourney system isn’t perfect
4-man bracket = more tourneys in more weight classes per season. quicker turnover, you can spend a little more on a quality field & your champ fights REAL title defenses. done
Alvarez & Lombard won the season 1 tourney & title, all starting promotions usually begin with a tourney to get their champ. To continue that each season is overkill…to the fact that Alvarez and Lombard ARE STILL CHAMPS

He will keep Nate the Fake on his back all day and night
Jay Hieron
I feel like Askren should be focusing on beating Hieron before he is calling people out. Hieron has way better standup than Askren and he has pretty solid TDD.

can he cut to 170 as easy
without his extra boost a few weeks before?
for the most part, and im speaking from experience, injectable test actually makes the cut harder because your muscles retain more water that they dont want to lose while you are on the stuff.

It says a lot about a person
when they try to kick someone when they’re down. Failed Olympic dreams and a crappy ranking in your current sport will do that I guess.
Man
Nate’s been gone for 72 hours and he’s already half the fighter he was before then.

Thats what happens man. I personally would love to see either fight (Askren or Lombard).
Both of those guys are extremely unproven so who knows who would win. But i think both would be good bouts, Marquardt is no joke.
Sheeeeeeeee-it
I think he destroys Askren
And wins against Lombard, but it’d still be fun. People above suggesting that Lyman Good or Hornbuckle have a good shot at him and that’s pure comedy.

One of the downsides of the Zuffa purchase of Strikeforce. Instead of Nate fighting guys like Daley, Diaz, Cyborg, etc the biggest fight out there for him is Ben Askren.

It will be interesting to watch but your right, there is nothing in it for Nate, except a pay check and a hope that he might make it back to the Zuffa fold. It just sucks for him that he was about to start a career at 170 and make space for himself there and now the biggest space he can make is against Askren. It his bed though.

In Ben Askren's world, "positional domination" is inter-changeable with "crush".
So close and yet so far. The story of my sports fandom.
Don't lie,
you love those funky transitions more than anything else. It’s alright man, I dig them too. I could barely get enough of the Thompson fight.

I guess Askren and Fitch have the same definition of the word "Crush".
Goldmember: A shmoke und a pancake. You know, a flapjack und a shigarette? No? Shigar und a waffle? No? Pipe und a crepe? No? Bong und a blintz? No? Well, then there ish no pleashing you.
Good move by Askren,
this is the only fight outside of Zuffa where he can potentially move up the world rankings… but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Marquardt fight a few times on smaller independent cards and then end up back in UFC.
