@NikLentz - I have to stay hospital tonight and get surgery in the morning. Kinda lame, but the FOTN made me feel better. Thanks #ufc and @danawhite

I know this man gets a lot of shit. But he was in no way boring. And I really feel for him taking that much damage from a blatantly illegal strike.
It didn't look blatant to me
Olivera was looking at Lentz’s other leg that wasn’t in the knee position. It sucks that it happened but I don’t think it was on purpose.
blatant = obvious
blatant =/= intentional.
It was in fact blatant.

Not according to google.
1. (of bad behavior) Done openly and unashamedly: “blatant lies”.
bla·tant
[bleyt-nt] Show IPA
–adjective
1.
brazenly obvious; flagrant: a blatant error in simple addition; a blatant lie.
2.
offensively noisy or loud; clamorous: blatant radios.
3.
tastelessly conspicuous: the blatant colors of the dress.

It can be both
bla·tant
adjective /ˈblātnt/
(of bad behavior) Done openly and unashamedly
- blatant lies
Completely lacking in subtlety; very obvious
- forcing herself to resist his blatant charm
Yep words mean more than one thing

I’ve a bone to pick with you. Where do you get off having a lame username with numbers like most internet jackoffs that lack intelligence and internet savvy, yet still manage to make hilarious and insightful posts with regularity? There’s a God damned standard, and your username implies that you’re a dumb, forgettable peon, but your demeanor implied otherwise.

I love love love love love the storylines MMA fans create.
Oliviera is a charming, fun, exciting Brazilian and his clearly illegal knee was absolutely unintentional. Michael Bisping, however, is clearly a dirty fucking cheater who should be suspended and banned from the sport for the exact same thing.

-Randall Munroe
That a pretty bad example to denigrate MMA fans, because they're right
Oliveira was pushing a frenetic pace, was landing knees like that all night long without them being illegal, and he was looking at the side where Lentz’ knee was off the ground.
Bisping took a second or two to set up the clinch and knee, and then threw it while Rivera had both knees on the ground and wasn’t even close to getting back up. He also showed no remorse whatsoever after being called for the foul.

I don't know if you're being sarcastic and agreeing with me
or being serious and proving me right. Either way, cheers!

I don't feel strongly about Bisping either way
And I felt that the knee was intentional; it is possible to come to such a conclusion without bias.

In what possible way is that proving you right? It’s perfectly clear if you stop being a presumptuous ass (either about MMA fans or about Oliveira’s mindset).
There is no way that Bisping could have thought that the knee was legal when he did it. He was proud of it even after being deducted the point.
Oliveira saw one leg that wasn’t grounded, and thought the other wasn’t either. He was apologetic after seeing the replay.
by paythefighters on Jun 27, 2011 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions 3 recs
That was apologetic? He kept saying he wants to put on a show and he trained really hard and other generic things about his win. Definately didn’t look apologetic though.
Maybe I’m not remembering it properly, but I heard him say he’s sorry.

The fighter's attitude after the foul
has nothing to do with whether the foul was actually intentional or not. Just with their ability to control their temper, or desire to stay in character.
Both guys threw the knees intentionally, it’s not clear whether they knew if it was illegal when they threw it.
I would argue that Oliveira continuing his attack without a break is just as bad, if not worse than Bisping’s taunts after getting caught for the knee. The funny thing is that Bisping was deducted a point, and Rivera easily could’ve taken a DQ win, or at the very least a NC; there was nothing unfair about that situation. Whereas Oliveira has actually been awarded the win.

He was exciting in the same way Guida can be
Exciting when his opponent makes it exciting and extremely boring when his game plan works properly.

Ridiculous
They haven’t turned this fight into a dq on olivera…. His knee directly caused and set up the choke. Totally illegal he should get the loss. Bad reffing and giving him a fotn isnt enough charles didn’t earn that at all.
by thepoopwizard on Jun 27, 2011 12:43 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
That's dumb
it was the most exciting fight before the knee. Don’t blame shitty reffing on Olivera.
It looks like the knee broke his orbital so he likely would have been DQ'd if the fight was stopped
by HaterSlayer on Jun 27, 2011 12:50 AM EDT up reply actions
We will never know
but it looked like Lentz would have probably just took a bit of time to clear his head and start fighting again. Even after the knee happened he was still sort of defending himself so I don’t think he would have quit.
Unless there’s been a rule change, you actually can’t do that with anything but a groin strike. If you get donked with an illegal blow, you need to decide right then if you can fight or not. No recovery period.
My name isn't Todd.
Don't blame olivera??!
He illegally freaking kneed him. Idc if the ref did anything the commission did he deserves a loss on his record. Jon jones has one under similar circumstances. He was winning and got over zealous but owns up to it. Exciting it not olivera didn’t earn it. Especially mow learning of a broken orbital. No longer fan of oliveras if he doesn’t fix this.

You're making it sound like he throws illegal strikes all the time.
This was the first time i’ve ever seen him throw one like that and it was accidental. You can tell Olivera felt bad about it after he saw the replay and saw what he did.
The commission will probably overturn the win so I really have no idea why you’re so mad at Olivera. It sucks that Lentz is going to be out for a while but it was an accident.
No longer fan of oliveras if he doesn’t fix this.
And how, specifically, do you think Olivera should “fix this”?

Also
I’m not saying they don’t deserve fotn I’m saying charles should be dqed. They still can have fotn just nik should win under unified rules.
by thepoopwizard on Jun 27, 2011 1:04 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Yes you are
Bad reffing and giving him a fotn isnt enough charles didn’t earn that at all.
It was obviously illegal to us, but not necessarily to him
If you look at where Oliveira’s head is and where he’s looking, he sees Lentz’ left let and assumes he’s off the ground in a similar position to what he was a few other times in the fight when the knee was legal.
It should be a no-contest, not a dq.
by paythefighters on Jun 27, 2011 3:15 AM EDT up reply actions
No excuse
He’s a professional. FIghters know to be careful about kneeing someone on the ground. Oliveira made a gamble, he tried to catch Lentz on the way up and failed. He will be DQ’d.
I guess that's reasonable
Still, so me there’s a distinction between what Oliveira did and what Jon Jones did. If Jones knew the rules, it would be clear to him that his strike was illegal. As far as we can see, Oliveira thought his strike was legal.
I can see the value in setting a precedent, however, which would tell fighters to be sure before throwing them. In that sense I agree with you.
by paythefighters on Jun 27, 2011 10:45 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, although it was a very harsh way for the fight to end, it is the referee at fault here.
Also, Oliveira still looked amazing.
attention ;
you suck Nick Lentz, Pat Barry deserves that check, and you’ll be saved yet again from a loss that you really deserve, knee or not.

I was kinda bitching about Lentz afterwards, but I have to give hom mad props after last night.
Does anyone else think that he kinda looked a little gassed at the end though?

Not sure if he was gassed or not but he did look a little slow getting up at the end of the first.

Yes the knee was illegal
the writing was on the wall for Lentz though…Oliveira was beginning to break him down and probably would have finished Lentz anyway without the knee landing…barring a Kongo come from behind…
A bullshit win should not stand based on a few blog commenters assumption that a finish was inevitable though. I saw it as back and forth up to that point(because I have eyes ;)

I'm stunned by the number of people that are saying "Who cares-- he was gonna lose anyway!"
Eerily similar to what people say about other things in society.. Won’t get detailed and start a shit storm, but it’s such a horrible stance to take— not just in regards to Lentz, but how I’m sure Oliveira wishes this were a clean victory. There’s a reason they actually fight, people. Hell, in Lentz’s very last fight he was performing similarly and pulled out a slick guillotine at the end.
Marking anyone for dead is stupid, but particularly a guy that hadn’t lost in the UFC and has a penchant for finding ways to win is a head shaker.

Shit, we can just use statistical analysis and theorize who would win every fight from now on. Since so many folks know outcomes before they happen. No need for actual fights with that insight!!!
Srsly
Nevermind that an illegal knee does, in fact, change whether or not he was winning the fight. Add to that the people in the live thread who were like “It should be legal so, you know, it’s kinda great”. You don’t have to like Lentz to understand the rules of the sport. I imagine most of those same people would be asking for him to get cut if the shoe were on the other foot.

So there you go
Nik Lentz needs to fight exciting fighters to be exciting.
And no, Andre Winner isn’t exciting, he’s just a mediocre fighter.
So close and yet so far. The story of my sports fandom.
