UFC Signs Top Ranked Featherweight Hatsu Hioki

Photo

The UFC tweeted this morning that it has signed Japanese featherweight Hatsu Hioki. Hioki, currently ranked as the world's #2 featherweight by the USA TODAY/SBNation Consensus MMA Rankings, is by far the most highly regarded fighter to not be signed to a Zuffa promotion.

Here's the tweet from the UFC:

FYI - guard-smashing savant Hatsu Hioki, a top-ranked featherweight, has been signed to the UFC roster. Welcome!less than a minute ago via web Favorite Retweet Reply

Hioki has an impressive 24-4-2 record with his only recent loss coming in a controversial decision loss to Michihiro Omigawa. Hioki owns two wins over UFC title challenger Mark Hominick, as well as Jeff Curran, Marlon Sandro, Takeshi Inoue, Ronnie Man and Rumina Sato. He is a former Shooto champion with experience fighting for the Sengoku promotion.

Expect Hioki to have to win a fight or two before he gets a crack at the belt currently held by Jose Aldo.

Hioki vs. Florian, Hioki vs. Aldo, Hioki vs. Mendes… this is ALL kinds of awesome. Great news, and a serious step in making the UFC’s FW division even stronger. Now all they need is to snag Sandro and Warren from Bellator and Bibiano from… wherever he is.

Florian definitely doesn't deserve the instant title shot over Mendes

So I say he gets one more “prove it” fight. Perfect number one contender stuff right here.

I’ve been hoping for this (Hioki/Florian) since the rumors of the Hioki signing first begun. It would be fantastic. The only timing issue has to do with what Aldo does in the meantime. But if he really is struggling with the injury/health issues that he appears to be, the time off would do him some good. Overall, this is very exciting news!

Maybe, but I don’t like guys coming in and getting title shots right away. If he comes n and destroys Florian, it makes the Hioki-Aldo matchup that much more appealing.

Put Florian vs. Hioki on UFC 135 on September 24th. The current “co-headliner” for that card is Hughes vs. Sanchez. Florian vs. Hioki makes a way better co-headliner, and bolsters the card hugely.

UFC 140 is scheduled for December 10th in Montreal. The event currently has no headline fight. Florian/Hioki vs. Aldo would be perfect. It gives Aldo 5+ months to get right and 100% healthy. It makes sense.

well it isnt always getting love from judges. Most top Jmma talent just have not performed well in the US.

Gomi came to the UFC and so far has been underwhelming, though its tough to say whether or not its a matter of him being on the decline in recent years.
Akiyama, 1-2
Santiago 0-1
Zaromskis
Aoki
Omigawa, though you mentioned he hasnt been getting the judges nod.

Hopefully hioki will break the trend of underwhelming jmma to us transition.

The verdict is still out on the recent JMMA talent that the UFC has brought in. Omigawa didn’t look good at all in his debut fight vs. Mendes. I thought he looked great against Elkins, and pretty much everyone except the judges felt he won that fight. He’ll be alright. Kid Yamamoto has only had one fight. He also did not look very good against Mighty Mouse, but I’m willing to say that had more to do with Johnson than Yamamoto. It was also his first UFC/cage fight. I’d still like to see what he can do.

Guys like Gomi and Kid are pretty much past their prime even though I am a fan of the two. Also, consider that Gomi’s first fight in the UFC was Kenny Florian, and Kid got Mighty Mouse. Omigawa got a tough first fight in the UFC against Chad Mendes. Riki Fukuda definitely got robbed against Nick Ring though, Omigawa recently got robbed against Elkins, and Korean Zombie got robbed against Garcia. I’m curious to see who they’ll give Hioki as a first fight in the UFC. They could go mid-tier and give him someone like Roop, the winner of Brown vs Phan, or another mid-tier. They could give him a top Featherweight as well.

Hioki vs Mendes

Florian even if he doesn’t deserve it should fight Aldo. It adds legitimacy to the more common fan about Aldo and adds a name to the featherweight division that people know and are excited about. Saying Mendes wins his next fight have him against Hioki for the winner of Aldo vs Florian.

Yes, well, in theory I would be too. But that’s not really how the UFC operates, basically no-one knows who Hioki is, so he’ll need at least one fight before the title shot.

Sorry, I misread that as Aldo instead of Mendes. Actually I’m not a fan of the Hioki – Mendes fight, because that would eliminate one of them as a title contender, and they are by far the two best options right now IMO. I’m not really a fan of the idea of giving Florian the shot after only one win in the division, I say he needs to fight at least once more against a top guy.

meh...

it doesn’t mean that he has to do it right away- there’s plenty of time to see how he does against wrestlers that won’t be in his UFC/U.S. debut.

You think Mendes could go from a headline or co-headline fight (vs. Aldo) to a Facebook prelim? I’m not pretending to be a huge Mendes fan, but I think you’re undervaluing the UFC’s opinion of him (Mendes).

It's awesome

so are the books- it starts out pretty slow as there’s a lot of world building and character introduction, but it picks up steam- it’s pretty next level t.v., but it is somewhat of an acquired taste. It’s definitely worth checking out though…do you get hbo?

I finished Feast for Crows about a month ago…. weakest of the 4 by far. When did you read them? I’d be out of my mind pissed if I started at the beginning at Feast was the only book produced in what- 8 years?? But yeah- SO stoked for Dance with Dragons…

I'm curious to see what they do about a lot of things in the books vs. the show...

(SPOILER ALERT)

they stayed extremely faithful in the 1st season, but reading the books feels almost masochistic at times-I mean, it’s not til almost the last chapter in Crows that any sort of satisfying consequences happen to the antagonists…. I don’t know how much of that they’ll be able to keep in the show

It’s fucking awesome. Finally a well-produced, high budget, adult, fantasy themed TV show. HBO series are usually good, right? Well, this one, it’s great, I tell ya. Unless you strongly dislike the fantasy genre, you should enjoy it. It has full nudity, incest, graphic violence, even good writing!

by Horselover Fat on Jun 25, 2011 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I have friends who hate fantasy...

but still love Thrones- it’s definitely not run of the mill fantasy. Also, I’m concerned about it’s life expectancy because of how great it is- it seems like the most brilliant shows don’t resonate with enough people to keep them viable, i.e. Deadwood, Arrested Development, Rome

Okay, cool. That is true, it’s definitely not your average child-friendly fantasy BS. I’m not sure but as far as I know it’s been seen as a great success so far, hasn’t it? I think it has had very good viewer numbers, as well as general good reception and reviews. So I’m not worried about that to be honest.

I really hope you're right...

but it remains to be seen how many people are going to stick out another season after the main character was killed off- the interwebs almost blew up after “Baelor.” Like this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owf6D2vfZqM

The winner of Gamburyan/Griffin would be a pretty good one. Florian/Hioki would push back Aldo’s next defense for a real long time, and Mendes is tied up with Yahya. Piorier or Roop could be good too, but I think Gamburyan/Griffin winner would provide a little more gravitas.

I like the Poirier/Roop idea a lot....

excellent intro fight- I’d just hate to see his UFC debut be against a wrestler- there’s plenty of time to see how he fares against wrestlers, let’s build him up to that though.

Why do you want to see Hioki possibly fight a guy (Roop) that destroyed by a guy (Hominick) that Hioki already beat twice? I like Roop. Nice guy. Roop vs. Hioki would be an utter waste of time.

I dunno man. I think a fight vs. Roop is not fair for Roop or Hioki. He deserves a contender.

more fans know Roop (thanks to TUF) than Hioki...

look at Kid Yamamoto’s debut- his first UFC fight was on a dark undercard fight that only saw the light of day because of fans demanding it, which also began the Facebook streams. He may deserve a contender, but I think that the UFC should learn from the lessons of Kid and Omigawa and not put Hioki in a fight with a wrestler for his debut…a fight with Florian would be fine because FLorian’s name would carry it, but it’s not like they’re teeming with contenders at 45. I think that Roop- or even better, Poirier is a totally appropriate intro fight.

I have much less of an issue with Poirier, who would make a decent challenge. He’s still a little green but I like his game.

I’m also curious as to how much they’re paying him- if he’s making too much, he’ll Werdum himself and won’t be worth keeping unless he’s fighting top 5 guys every time, which would force them to put him in a #1 contender’s bout right off the bat.

Because stylistically it could be a good scrap that does a good job of acclimating Hioki not only to the peculiarities of the octagon itself, but also to fighting outside Japan. An intro fight can allow for a bit of latitude.

The only negative thing about this signing...

Is that Hatsu will have to destroy the soul of every opponent he faces and finish them inside the 3/5 rounds, because Asian fighters simply cannot win a decision in the UFC. It’s almost FanPost-worthy i think.

why in god's name is everyone on this board saying "make florian fight hioki"

there are a lot of people here who don’t have the faintest idea about how to promote a fight.

kenny florian has a big name, ergo he will get the fight. people like mendes and hioki are TOTALLY unknown to people who even follow the sport pretty closely.

florian, in victory or defeat, will do for aldo what pulver did for uriah faber. hioki and mendes, win or lose DO NOTHING for the 145 weight class.

and anyway, florian’s title shot is not that “unjust” anyway. based on his overall record, he is not that much worse a candidate that either mendes or hioki.

and why would you want those guys to fight each other and potentially wreck each other as challengers while aldo sits on the shelf until december?

it just makes no sense on so many levels.

by Clifford J on Jun 25, 2011 9:57 PM EDT reply actions

Hioki needs a can in his first fight

Otherwise he’ll lose to some barely top 15 “oh wow him?” wrestler like JMMA guys always do.

Clay Guida ensured he is now and forever the worlds most exciting and active boring fighter.
