UFC on Versus 4: Charles Oliveira Vows to Stop Nik Lentz' 'Boring Style'

Photo via MMA Weekly.

Lightweight Charles Oliveira made a big impression on UFC fans with his Judo Chop worthy performance against Efrain Escudero at UFN 22. A loss to Jim Miller in an exciting back and forth fight at UFC 124 set him back to the undercard but he's ready to get his career back on the upswing against Nik Lentz on the Facebook portion of the UFC on Versus 4 card.

Oliveira spoke to SBNation's Luke Thomas about Lentz:

SB Nation: Are you worried the grinding style of Nik Lentz will stifle offense and make for a lackluster fight?

Charles Oliveira: Nik is a great wrestler and a great striker, I will have to deal with that! But I do know one thing I can stop for sure: his boring style. When we fight he is going to have to keep up with me. I have fun when I fight, and I am going to have a lot of crazy moves. He will have to deal with it in exciting fashion. He will not slow me down, I am always looking for a finish. The fight is going to be exciting.

Best of luck with that Mr. Oliveira, Lentz has a grinding relentless style that so far has him unbeaten in the UFC -- although he did fight to a majority draw against Thiago Tavares at UFN 20.

I’ve a bone to pick with you. Where do you get off having a lame username with numbers like most internet jackoffs that lack intelligence and internet savvy, yet still manage to make hilarious and insightful posts with regularity? There’s a God damned standard, and your username implies that you’re a dumb, forgettable peon, but your demeanor implied otherwise.

Jim Miller is a tough fight for anybody. I feel like Aloe Vera could have won that fight if he didn’t underestimate Miller’s ground game.

Agreed

Hopefully that loss humbled him a bit.

by av1o3 on Jun 23, 2011 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions

That loss to me showed Oliviera’s inexperience more than anything else. From that point into the fight, Miller wasn’t outclassing or outdoing him in any part of the game. Even when he got taken down, Oliviera kept throwing his legs up for triangles and armbars, so even if Lentz manages to take him down, Oliviera’s going to stay busy on the bottom. Standing, from what I’ve seen, I think Oliviera has the advantage. Despite his flashy moves and combos, Oliveira still has some good fundamentals.

agreed...

but I don think that his flash makes him susceptible to wrestlefuckers. Of course, a large part of that is the fact that he’s not afraid to be on his back, but a decision loss to give him 2 in a row may change that a bit…

Miller takes that fight 9 times out of 10. He’s a much more technically sound fighter in every phase of the game. If you watch it again Charles never puts him in danger with a single one of those subs (Fight Metric doesn’t even credit him with one attempt.) Every time he went for a triangle Miller was a step ahead and had both arms in. When he tried to switch to an armbar the second arm was out before the hips came around. When he tried for the leg lock Miller stopped him from getting his leg across to rotate on it. Yes, the subs kept Miller from working G&P, but he also fell slightly more behind and out of position with each one he threw until, ultimately, he was too many steps behind and it left him open for the counter. Miller just stayed calm and stayed ahead until his opening came.

It’s true Charles may have underestimated Miller’s ground game, but even if he had not and had given it full respect it’s still better than Charles’ is.

Classic purple belt vs. black belt dynamic.

In most places, purple belts are expected to threaten now and then, but a patient and skilled black belt should be able to counter repeatedly until an opening comes up and then BOOM.

Exactly. CO is great to watch, and with how young he is a phenomenal prospect, but it’s a great disservice to Miller when people say Charles lost because he got lazy or didn’t take Miller seriously, when really it was just a better grappler doing what a better grappler should. Sure, the over-zealousness with subs made it easier for Miller to find an opening, but he wasn’t running on the defensive until he stumbled into a sub or anything.

His immediate future, yes. Miller said after he was the smallest opponent he’s ever faced, and that includes one fight he took at 145 lbs. when he was going to have to wait (behind Edgar) for a shot at Reality Fighting’s LW belt. It probably didn’t help the comparison that Miller was just off facing the biggest welterweight lightweight around in Tibau.

Going forward though, he’s still got his “grown man” years ahead of him, and I imagine he’ll put some size on that frame to the point he is a real lightweight when all is said and done.

Nik Lentz’s ‘Boring Style’

eh

common mistake. No big.

You know what, chris81203?

I’ve a bone to pick with you. Where do you get off having a lame username with numbers like most internet jackoffs that lack intelligence and internet savvy, yet still manage to make hilarious and insightful posts with regularity? There’s a God damned standard, and your username implies that you’re a dumb, forgettable peon, but your demeanor implied otherwise.

In other words, you confuse and infuriate me. - James Brady (Ninjajames)

excuse me, sir..

but if a basic junior high level grammar mistake is made frequently enough, then it’s NOT a big deal? i feel like that might be wrong.

And fuck latin. Dead languages should stay dead.

LETS GO OLIVE OIL!!!

Anderson Silva, Edson Barboza, Jose Aldo, Charles Oliveira, Thiago Alves = Muay Thai wrecking machines!

Oliveira is going to put the stamp on Nik Lentz.

Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.

I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.

I really don’t understand the Jim Miller hype. What upper level guy has he beaten? Everyone that’s on his list are a bunch of mid-tier guys at best. Ugh pit him against Guida next.

Lentz doesn't really have a boring style

He had one shitty fight and an average one. His last fight was badass.
