UFC on Versus 5: Dan Hardy vs. Chris Lytle is Official
The UFC officially announced today their August 14th event at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin: UFC on Versus 5, which be televised live on Versus, and headlined by a welterweight bout between Chris Lytle and Dan Hardy, with a co-main event pitting Jim Miller against Ben Henderson:
British welterweight star Dan "The Outlaw" Hardy made it no secret that he wanted his next fight to be against fellow knockout artist Chris "Lights Out" Lytle. On Sunday, Aug. 14, live from Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Hardy gets his wish, as the Ultimate Fighting Championship® announced today its first-ever card in Wisconsin.
Hardy and Lytle, two of the 170-pound division’s most devastating strikers, will collide in the main event, while lightweight contenders Jim Miller and Ben "Smooth" Henderson go to war in a bout that will determine which fighter moves one step closer to a shot at the title. Plus, light heavyweight star Stephan Bonnar returns to the Octagon® to battle the menacing Karlos Vemola and Amir Sadollah and Duane Ludwig engage in an exciting welterweight bout.
"Dan Hardy and Chris Lytle want to stand toe-to-toe until someone falls and that’s a recipe for an outstanding fight," UFC President Dana White said. "This is the fight both guys wanted, so the fans in Milwaukee are in for a treat. The Miller-Henderson fight should be equally exciting since both guys love to come forward and press the action. We can’t wait to host our first event in Wisconsin this summer."
The current card:
Main Card (on Versus):
-Dan Hardy vs. Chris Lytle (welterweight)
-Jim Miller vs. Ben Henderson (lightweight)
-Stephan Bonnar vs. Karlos Vemola (light heavyweight)
-Amir Sadollah vs. Duane Ludwig (welterweight)
Prelims:

-Cole Miller vs. T.J. O'Brien (lightweight)
-Tom Lawlor vs. Kyle Noke (middleweight)
-Jacob Volkmann vs. Danny Castillo (lightweight)

Ooooh Miller vs. Bendo??
That should be a good fight. As is Lytle vs. Hardy and Amir vs. Ludwig.
Bonnar does not deserve to be on the main card ever again. I don’t mind him fighting but I hate that he gets a main card spot over better fighters.
Why the Bonnar hate?
Bonnar’s last fightwas a fairly entertaining trouncing of Pokrajac. We even got to see some of Bonnar’s vaunted ground game instead of sloppy stand’n’bang.
And in the fight before that, he dispatched Soszynski in a fun brawl…why doesn’t he deserve a televised spot?
Those are some pretty middling competitors.
Why are we watching Bonnar rather than a top 5 bantamweight contender in Benavidez?

It’s mainly because he’s not a top level fighter and he’s getting televised spots over people who are. I still can’t believe he was headliner in his fight with Pokrajac (who is a no name) even if it was a Spike(maybe Vs.) card.
He also has a tendency of making fights three rounds of shitty stand and bang.
It’s the level of competition and the level that Bonnar is in on the pecking order. The guy has been a perennial mid-tier UFC Light Heavyweight, and there really is no upside to him. He generally has fun fights though, and I enjoy watching him. However, main card spots are valuable and could be better used to showcase a rising prospect or up-and-comer instead of a mid-tier fighter with little upside like Bonnar. I get that he has some name recognition and generally has fun fights though, and in this case, he is fighting a prospect in Vemola who may have some upside so I’m alright with it for this card. However, in other cases, that spot feels like it could be used on someone with more upside than Bonnar.

I'll be the first one to say it.
Miller vs Henderson should be main event.

Does he finally get a title shot if he wins? He deserves it.
Thank you UFC fans. My name Stun Gun. I want GSP
he does
but i imagine he’d have to pull a rashad and wait awhile, til the maynard/edgar thing gets sorted out. especially if pettis wins on saturday.
Agreed. If Pettis wins, he has the title shot.
If not, Miller may has a legitimate claim as the best contender.

Interim title.
Given how long the wait will take for Edgar and Maynard, I’d want the UFC to swap Miller/Henderson into the main event and the winner takes on Guida/Pettis for an interim title.

He'll probably have one more fight before getting a title shot
He shouldn’t have to but timing will make it necessary. Maynard has the next shot(and we still don’t know when that will be) and if Pettis wins he has the one after that. It could be 2012 before he’s able to get a title shot, I doubt Miller wants to wait that long.
When has Hardy done anything but stand toe-to-toe?

against Johnson and GSP he didn’t really have the chance to. And against Condit, it was more like toe to slumped over body

All this standing toe to toe stuff is BS, Lytle has a major advantage over Hardy on the ground. Lytle by sub

I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if he stood toe to toe looking for the fight of the night payday. I know that he put together a nice little win streak prior to his loss, but he’s like 35 and possibly recognizes his window to make money is closing and is likely not going to get back in to title contention. I just don’t think a win over Dan hardy puts him back in the picture because the decision is so deep

Is anyone else...
a little upset that they allowed a guy, in Hardy, who has lost his last 3 fights to handpick his next opponent?
by John Danaher's Hair on Jun 2, 2011 5:14 PM EDT reply actions 1 recs
Not really,
since he hand-picked a guy who should roll him. But I see your point.

It annoys me that a guy with a three fight losing streak gets a main event spot
but I’m glad Lytle is finally headlining a card. I don’t mind Bonnar being on the main card, especially when he’s fighting a beast like Vemola.

Yes,
but I don’t blame the UFC for trying to squeeze the last bit of star power that’s left in Dan Hardy.
He’s already been exposed as overrated; this is the last chance they may have to market him valuably.

especially his face when he throws the knee.

Promo is right!
They were trying to promote the fact that Mark Coleman has turned into a Muay Thai wrecking machine
Wish the headliner was better....
But I’ll still be there in person. Very pumped for my 1st UFC!

Its true Miller vs Henderson is the most important fight on that card by far
Im a huge Hardy fan but Im too worried for him to be excited about that fight. Im a big Lytle fan too so if hes getting cut at least its to someone who is awesome.
Maybe the most exciting fight for me is Vermola Bonner because Vermola is the crazies fighter out there. guy doesnt even know what technique is he just goes for his opponent like captain caveman!
Miller Hendo is the main event to me
Man I hope they show the prelims on Facebook
Twitter @MaZZM
http://www.mazzznet.com/
Are there normally that many fights on the prelims?
7 seems like a lot.
There's 8 prelims on the upcoming VS show in Pitt
Wish the VERSUS shows would have 5 main card fights instead of 4…… the last few WEC broadcasts had 5.
Why the fuck is Dan Hardy headlining a card
When he’s on a 3-fight losing streak? While Jon. Fitch’s next fight is probably gonna be on Facebook or something?
Oh, and lawl @ “Hardy and Lytle, two of the 170-pound division’s most devastating strikers”, at least in Hardys case.

He’s more overrated IMO

calling Hardy a devastating striker
Is probably the funniest thing I’ve heard today.

Yeah, StevenGiles covered it. Even on a delay, the UK audience is miniscule compared the US. Hardy got top billing because he’s a bigger draw than Bendo or MillerBrother. Not because he’s English.

I thought that they tape delayed the free shows for the UK...
like they do for the west coast…but he would know.
by John Danaher's Hair on Jun 2, 2011 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions
Well they show it live during the night then show most of it the next day. However, that has no bearing on Hardy headlining in my opinion, and I’d say the viewer numbers are very small. I doubt many UK people have a clue when he fights in the US. He’s headlining because he’s an interesting charismatic guy with a fan-friendly style, not because he’s English

He's the most well known name on the card
And he’s got a style that the average person likes to watch.
Is it me...
…or are these UFC On Versus cards consistently better than Spike’s? And some PPV’s, for that matter.
So you’re really going with Benavidez – Wineland to be untelevised, huh.. that just sucks, UFC need to step up their game on showing the top 135 and 145 fighters. Throw Amir Sadollah down there instead, I just can’t ever get excited to see him fight. Irrelevant as Bonnar – Vemola might be, it still sounds like it could be entertaining. Lytle – Hardy is whatever really.
Overall I’m definitely most looking forward to Miller – Henderson though. Call me crazy but I think I might pick Bendo in that one. Definitely a tough fight for both guys though.
I love Bonnar...always exciting.
Miller vs. Bendo will be great.
Lytle Hardy won’t even produce a KO. A sub, if we’re lucky.

Only the top few BWs and FWs get to be televised
You look at the upcoming cards, up to and including this one, there are 15 BW and FW fights on the prelims. There are two on the main cards. I guess if you weight less than 155 pounds and want to get seen you either have to fight for the title or hope to god a relevant LW drops down.
Is it still too early to talk about how the UFC is handling the integration of the bantamweight and featherweight divisions?
I’ve been talking about it since it went down, pretty much. People don’t want to hear it for some reason. They all told me to wait a year before I should be judging anything, but we’re 7 months deep with another 3 months worth of cards announced and it’s only getting worse I think it might be time to annoy a bunch of people and re-visit my “Has Zuffa Dropped The Ball on the WEC Merger” stuff.
Still a Beer Monster.
http://www.instrength.com
I think it is time to revisit that subject
We’re halfway through this one year timeline, it might be a good time to take a look at how it’s going.
How Miller vs Bendo is not the main event is beyond me.
That is a great matchup.

More like
“Dan Hardy and Chris Lytle want to stand toe-to-toe until someone falls and that’s a recipe for an outstanding fight Lytle gets bored and takes Hardy down and submits him,” UFC President Dana White said.
the question is
does hardy get cut after another loss or does he get to hand pick another opponent and get to headline a card? this is a joke of a main event..
hardy-lytle shouldnt be televised over benavidez-wineland

“Dan Hardy and Chris Lytle want to stand toe-to-toe until someone falls and that’s a recipe for an outstanding fight,” UFC President Dana White said.
Yeah, Dan Hardy said the same thing for his previous fight. Unfortunately for him, whether a fight stays upright or not is not his decision to make. It’s entirely up to Lytle. I think Lytle will get a sub, personally. He needs a big win following the debacle against Ebersole, and he won’t take a chance of getting caught on his feet. He’ll take it down, and work for a finish there. Should still be an exciting fight, but just not how Hardy or Dana White envision it…
