2011 Bloody Elbow Tournament of Bad: Harold Howard Region Round of 32 Voting
After a long and extensive process, esteemed colleague Brent Brookhouse and I are proud to bring you the 2011 Bloody Elbow Tournament of Bad, an idea from the local Chicago sports radio show, Boers and Bernstein. The concept is simple: compile a list of 64 of the worst things related to the sport of MMA and pit them against one another in an NCAA Tournament-style bracket. You, the readers, vote on each match up until we have our ultimate champion.
Voting continues in the Art Jimmerson region until midnight ET tonight. Check out the updated bracket.
We move on to the relatively weak Harold Howard region. The matchups:
(8) "Live" interviews during UFC Fight Night vs. (16) Male fighters with tramp stamps
(4) No knees to the head on the ground vs. (12) Aleksander Emelianenko competing with Hepatitis C
(3) Kazushi Sakuraba's right ear vs. (6) MMA in a ring
(2) Frank Shamrock's braces vs. (7) UFC's Youtube policy

Vote after the jump. Polls close at midnight ET tomorrow.

PRIDE NEVER DIE!!!
Stamp
Knees
Ear
Brace face
Learn JiuJitsu, it's fun.
I spend way too much time on the SB blogs......it's embarrassing.
I still dont even know what the gripe is with youtube. Who the fuck watches youtube for anything other than impossible sit ups, adorable kittens and clumsy obese folks?

I watch it to learn things
My vocabulary has improved immensely.

I do too. I’m tired of guys pressed against the cage, throwing ineffective knees, more or less standing around, waiting for the ref to tell them break time is over.

I hate MMA in a ring. Restarting a grappling match in the middle because someone scooted out underneath the ropes is fucking stupid.

Going with tramp stamps
You can always mute the interviews
I like MMA in the ring
Fuck y’all.
Also, think about it. How many people here got into MMA watching old fights on youtube? “Oh, this CroCop guy is supposed to be good huh… Holy shit.” I really don’t have to say anything other than “Rampage Slam.” Now fans can’t do that. It makes the sport less accessible, and I would think keeps back it’s growth.

i like it in the ring too - sometimes.
see, i was a PRIDE fanboy back in the day and hated the cage. over time my opinion changed.
as fighter safety concern, i prefer the cage. there’s too many bullshit stoppages due to dudes being on the edge of the ring. i’d rather have them in a cage where they can’t fall out.

Make it three.
I didn’t even watch MMA when PRIDE still existed [:(], and I still love it in a ring. Makes it feel classier, and easier to cut off opponents routes, leaving less time to stall while standing. And you can’t win a fight via leaning on your opponent.

I still don’t get what is so awful about their YouTube policy. Is it the fact that they don’t upload fights to it themselves? That seems to be the only thing I can think of. I know putting up the occasional fight on youtube is just good advertising. However I can understand if they take down entire fights that other people put up, especially right after a show, that’s legit in their business interests. Furthermore they don’t seem to touch fan-made highlight reels and trailers that use their footage, which would be a legit gripe if they did.
It’s not just their resistance to putting up fights. (Which they should. I know they put stuff up for free on UFC.com leading up to events, but they just don’t understand how much more exposure they’ll get when places like this can embed it on the site.)
They should be putting up highlights and stuff after events. When we put up highlight videos from ESPN, they were BY FAR the biggest traffic generator for the next couple of days after the event.

stamps [same category as fanny packs. sorry.]
Hep [goddamn, son! you tryin to spread that shit?]
Saku ear [get that shit removed, homie. it’s criminal to have a dude bleed out like that.]
youtube [it bothers me slightly more than the braces, which i find inoffensive, really].

I don’t get all the hate for tramp stamps, as, to me, they’re not worse than any tattoo and better than many. (I generally dislike tattoos.)
Hep C is serious shit and knees on the ground make me nervous.
I prefer a cage, but the ring isn’t awful. Sakuraba’s ear was way beyond awful.
Lastly, I went with youtube pplicy. It’s not that I mid it a whole lot and more that I have nothing against Shamrock’s braces. I used braces when I was a kid, what’s so wrong about it?
You used them when you were a kid. Not a grown man in his 40s with enough money to get invisalign.

I’m presuming invisalign does the same thing as braces and can’t be seen, is that right? Even so, I still don’t get the hate. It’s not like it’s some ridiculous fashion statement, it’s braces! I prefer to wear glasses, even though I could get surgery for my eyes. I get that some people may dislike the looks of glasses, but I’ve never met anybody who actually hates them.

Taped interviews (really don’t understand the hate for lower back tattoo’s, it’s the same as any other place on the body, except this whole “tramp stamp” has become a cool phrase or whatever)
No knees to the head of grounded opponent – really, I just hate that the current rules in North America are so watered down. Bring back the knees!
Sakuraba’s ear – because MMA in a ring is pretty good. Yes I understand the point about re-starts being annoying, but then again, how much fun is it too see two guys hugging eachother against the cage for minutes at a time? That is even worse to IMHO.
UFC’s youtube policy – because it’s stupid and backwards way of thinking. Plus, yes I’ve occasionally made fun of Frank’s braces, but come on, supposedly he DOES need them. So I can’t in good conscience vote for them.
