Seriously Tim, what the fuck happened to you? I remember the good old days when you wrote hilariously awesome letters from deployment to 5 Ounces of Pain, now you just seem like a twat.

I used to read all the pissing and moaning about Kennedy’s personality, and quite frankly I didn’t get it. Now I get it. The dude just doesn’t switch off.

Everyone refer to this. This is why Kennedy is annoying. It isn’t that people hate the troops, or that no one wants to think about the wars, it is this.

He’s not throwing service in your face. He’s talking about the sacrifices people make daily, not him. It was a very important message – it’s easy to forget what families are going through every day.

Sorry it makes you uncomfortable.

by Jonathan Snowden on Jun 2, 2011 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I actually like Kennedy and have no problem with anything he does to draw attention to the troops and the sacrifices they make, but this just seems a little random. I feel like I’m missing some connection here. I mean, I think a Tweet that said, “Remember our soldiers and the sacrifices they make every day” with no mention of Pellegrino would be more effective because now everyone’s trying to figure out why Kurt was involved (and getting all pissed off).

And, I like them both and I love and support our troops but I’m just confused.

It’s not really your place to say what is the right or wrong reason for joining the military. Tim was just pointing out the singularly most trying issue for most soldiers. I don’t see how it throws anything into your face. It doesn’t belittle anyone.

by Jonathan Snowden on Jun 2, 2011 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s not really his place to presume why Kurt is taking a year off?

Being in the military doesn’t give you a free pass to say whatever shit you want without people being able to criticize you or the reasons you say it.

Who said it does? You’re growing hysterical.

I’m just attempting to explain that the issue Tim is addressing is the biggest one in our community. He used a hot topic to point it out. I don’t think he meant any harm.

by Jonathan Snowden on Jun 2, 2011 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Don’t we have a 100% volunteer military?

How is that an issue?

I assume soldiers volunteer in order to serve their country or because it’s what’s best for them at that point in their life, not for a national pay on the back.

Who’s asking for a pat on the back? We have a volunteer force, sure. We also have a democracy. That means citizens, like you and me, have a responsibility to our military to make sure things are done in the right way. Through our elected officials we decide how these men and women are used and the sacrifices they are asked to make.

So I think it’s valuable to know what life is like for these soldiers. They are our responsibility.

It's a pretty stupid comparison.

But Tim’s comment was apropos of nothing, whether or not you support the troops. And of course, supporting the troops and supporting the wars they are expected to fight for bloated old capitalists are two different issues, of course.

I used an extreme example to highlight my point.

I didn’t say Kennedy’s statement was as bad as Griffith’s film, only that it differed in degree. They were both examples of unintentional offense.

by Scott C. Broussard on Jun 2, 2011 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Have you seen it?!

It’s definitely a film about the rise of the kkk in response to what was perceived as black folk destroying the south during the reformation? It cast the violent and deplorable actions of the kkk as heroic deeds meant to defend the glory of the South and showcased some of the worst examples of stereotyping you could possibly see. I think Tim made a silly move, and I think Griffith made a movie that intentionally portrayed racist murderers as heroes and black folk as demonic fiends. That’s like comparing someone spilling a glass of water on your shoes by accident to someone who intentionally states that lynching people is good. It doesn’t make sense and is not a very good example, extreme or not.

by bigstupidsmile on Jun 2, 2011 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, I've seen it, and it's vile.

That said, Griffith was so ashamed of the response and that people thought he was a racist that his next film was about the evils of intolerance. It’s called Intolerance.

The issue that you have with my analogy is that you view DWG as an overt racist; I’m saying he wasn’t (I’m not saying he wasn’t racist at all – only that he wasn’t hardcore – his & his society’s prejudice merely seeped into the film). My evidence is that his next feature tried to exonerate him. All of his inner circle reported that he was hurt by the accusations that Birth was a racist film, and that he intended to make a historical epic.

I’m not defending the content of Birth of a Nation, to be clear.

I figured I'd put that in to be safe.

Tim seems to have an inflated sense of self importance.

Is the military protecting our freedom and way of life? I don’t really think they are. Do they sacrifice more than any other group of people? They do and my heart certainly bleeds for the soldiers and families of soldiers who have lost their lives.

They are making the ultimate sacrifice, but remember that it is their choice and there can be a good case made for it not being required by anyone.

All that being said, I think it would be very difficult for Tim or any soldier to have the viewpoint that I just expressed and therefore I’m not holding it against him and judging him to be a douche.

what bugs me about this

how much AM i supposed to appreciate our soldiers? once a week? once a day? how am i supposed to do it? which political party speaks for them?

the whole thing is so vague. i wish people would stop telling me to appreciate soldiers, or think about them, or remember them, and be more specific. what exactly do you want me to do? bring them back? send more care packages? get a tattoo? i’ll fucking do it. just tell me.

it’s like they just want you to perpetually go around feeling bad or they just want you to do a lot of “slacktivism”, like putting a bumper sticker on your car. how does that help poor young men who have been crippled by roadside bombs?

and what bugs me about kennedy in particular is that he is clearly seeing how well the “soldier” angle is working for stann and so he’s trying to play it up himself. that kind of bugs me.

There's so many varying mentalities around

When I interned at the county paper, I had to interview a guy I actually went to high school with who was home on leave from Afghanistan. He didn’t want to talk about his service at all, just about how great it was to see his little sister and mom again. He refused to mention anything about being a soldier, or other soldiers. My dad’s the same way.

Then there are some people I know who absolutely have “done it for the glory”. By that, I mean they were generally unintelligent people in school, largely troublemakers who saw the reverence held for servicemen and women, and wanted that because no one respected them in their lives. Those are the people in my town that I see always wearing military gear, talking about their service, and for some reason they all think Democrats don’t support the military.

There’s so many different mindsets out there, you can’t really paint an opinion of people with broad strokes. But it does seem that Kennedy tends to be a little “Look at me! Look at me! I’m a hero! I sacrificed for the country!”, which is a bit off-putting.

Time to jump in front of the bus.

Guess this is a perfect example of why guys like Kennedy and Stann tend to rub me the wrong way. I grew up in a religious/military family and area, and there’s a fine line between being a soldier and just beating your chest.

Like it or not, a lot of people join the military just for the power trip. Kinda sad, but that’s humanity. Kennedy is definitely one of those people, and this kind of unnecessary garbage proves it. Stann may not be, but being around so many of these insufferable fucks for the majority of my life has made me cautious of everyone’s true intentions.

by vile(nt)green on Jun 2, 2011 11:03 AM EDT reply actions

Stann has never come off this way

He is less vocal and more action when it comes to supporting troops. His interview with Josh Gross was fantastic last week and highlights the key difference between them.

Stann’s actions are to legitimately help other soldiers, Kennedy’s actions seem self-serving and to be designed to bring attention and praise to him.

by T.P. Grant on Jun 2, 2011 11:07 AM EDT up reply actions

What I’m saying is that throwing out your service as a non-sequitur about how you’re mentally tougher than some other fighter (esp. one several weight classes below you, who you have no reason to insult) is low-class.

I’m not saying that talking about the military life should be taboo – I’m saying you should speak of it (as with all things) wisely. Tim did not, regardless of whether he meant to.

I was a fan of Tim Kennedy.

How is he belittling Kurt?

If anyone read why Kurt is retiring, it’s because he missed a lot of “firsts” from his daughter and with a child on the way, doesn’t want the same to happen. A lot of professional athletes go through this, especially ones who are constantly on the road. It’s a similar plight of what soldiers go through every fucking day of their deployment.

It reads like a manifesto of "I'm in the military, so I'm tougher (i.e. better) than you."

It’s unnecessary piggy backing, he should of just let Kurt have his moment.

His initial tweet...

Sounds petty as hell when read in a vacuum. His second tweet does help clarify the original intent of his message.

Lesson: Kennedy should be more careful about how he says what he says.

"Petty"

Precisely the word I’ve been searching for.

I like Kennedy.

I can’t stand comments like this though. We get it, you served and service doesn’t bring half the glory it should. It also brings tons of hardship. You signed the paperwork though and joined a volunteer army, get over it and realize that not every comment you ever make needs to be about how your life as a soldier was harder.

My brother in law is currently in Iraq yet again after having served a couple in Afghanistan. I worry about him, my sister, their kids, and everybody else who serves with him. I give a thought to them all daily. He though can have a conversation that doesn’t turn into these comments everytime he opens his mouth. He also realizes that it is his choice to do these things whether or not they are appreciated.

In short, there is no reason for him to have pulled Batman into his tweeting like this. It comes off as condescending to a man who has put on some great fights over the years and who doesn’t want to miss out on seeing his child born and raised.

This reminds me of a fight my friend had with his girlfriend that I had the "pleasure" of witnessing

My friend is a senior developer for a major software company in Washington. His job is, to put it bluntly, incredibly stressful albeit highly lucrative (incentive pay, ridiculous raises, performance bonuses for meeting ship dates etc.).

He complained to his girlfriend after a 16 hour day at the office that his boss is an asshole and he hates his job. Her response was along the lines of “well you should be grateful to have such a good job, a lot of people work for $9/hr”. Apples to fucking oranges. People having it worse than you doesn’t really mean that it automatically negates whatever issues you have.

I get the feeling that if I ever bitch about my job in the presence of Tim Kennedy he’ll have to remind me how much worse troops deployed in warzones have it.

What a douche.

Find a way to make your point without name-calling.

This is a great example of a comment that was otherwise perfectly fine until the last sentence fragment which netted a warning. Don’t be like ihateemo. Follow the rules. Don’t get warnings.

I agree completely

Although, as someone who does a lot more lurking than posting, I’m just curious to know if there are similar guidelines for staff. Snowden said some really disrespectful things to some commenters on this post earlier today. Most of which have since been deleted. Is comment deletion usually the course of action when that occurs?

OK

Good to know. Thanks. By the way, I think y’all run an awesome site with great content and I’m constantly impressed by the intelligent and respectful community that posts here. I just wanted to know how that stuff was handled.

Your example was the least offensive which is why I used you as an example instead of hiding your comment like I did the others.

I think when a person does this to themselves, i.e. says “I could be making 9/hr” it can be helpful. Puts things into perspective, for me at least. When someone else says it, I think you’re right. While they may say the comment in an attempt to help, it often comes across as dismissive.

Watch it! The weekends I have streamed from Budo for 2 days it turns into a giant jiu jitsu BBQ party weekend haha.
