UFC Personal Trainer
I trained BJJ for a while, but am currently lacking funds to continue training. I'm massively out of shape and would love to find an affordable way to do some kind of MMA. So my question is, while this is obviously no where near the real thing, would the upcoming game UFC Personal Trainer (fon Wii) be a worthwile, or useful, way to add a splash of MMA into attempt at getting in shape? http://www.ufcpersonaltrainer.com/

Nice concept but this is not the right way to get into fighting shape. Go to your garage, do 3×5 minute rounds of burpees. Go outside, do some sprints. Its not that hard.

But it's a start
And a step in the right direction. I think it’ll be decent workout, geared more toward staying physically active and shedding a few lbs rather than gaining muscle mass. My girlfriend has EA active 2 as a way to maintain physical condition after completing P90x. Long story short having seen and played some of these “Exercise Games” I highly doubt there’s much MMA related training that will be a fraction as effective or comparable to taking BJJ lessons or going to a MMA Gym. I’m guessing it contains various Calisthenics mixed in with punches and kicks that mimic what fighters do with the limitations that the Wii possesses. It’s impossible to simulate grappling through any console. However don’t let that discourage you from taking steps from getting in shape.

Absolutely it is a great start but the keyword I used was ‘fighting shape’. I’m sure there is some sort of active health benefit from this video game but he can save himself a bunch of money simply creating his own workout schedule. As you mentioned, it seems to be a mix of calisthenics and shadowboxing; why not just do that and add some sprints? Far more effective and cost efficient. No need to spend 65 dollars for the video game and 100 some dollars for the kinetic setup.

Agree with you 100%
I think the video game aspect adds some motivation for some.

if you dont already own a kinetic then the set up is going to cost you 150 for that then 65 for the game
at the price you can get a heavy bag , some bag gloves , a kettlebell and a jump rope
and get 10 times the work out

Thanks for the input guys
Not necesarily trying to get into “fight shape” just lose weight right now. I’m currently in the 250 range, ideally my goal weight is about 170, just trying to get going in the right direction for a change, lol.
To change gears a bit, what would a good investment (say in the $40-$50 range) to get some kind of mma-esque training?

Does it have to be MMA related?
Because I don’t know anything in that price range. Maybe GSP’s Rushfit program??? I’m not familiar with that though so can not vouch for it. If you’re serious about getting in shape, P90x got me in the best shape I’ve been in since I graduated Basic training 13 years ago. There is a Kenpo workout in the P90 program.

I suppose it doesnt have to be MMA related
I’m just trying to come up with something to keep me entertained, as far as MMA, and get me in shape until I can afford to get back to BJJ, etc.
I’ve looked at P90x, and TRX, and Rip60, which seems like a combination of TRX and P90x, and is “endorsed” or whatever you wanna call it, by GSP and Jillian Michaels. I havent actually heard of Rushfit, i’ll look into that as well.
Thanks

Oh and
if you do end up trying that Rushfit. Go through Amazon. You’ll get a better deal and might be able to grab a used copy

Rushfit looks very interesting
quite possibly better than the UFC game, well obviously different since its DVD’s, but looks like it might be a better workout
