Kenny Florian picked up a hard-fought decision victory in his featherweight debut over Diego Nunes at UFC 131. The fight was the co-main event of the evening.
What was the high spot of this fight?
He might have lost the fight, but my favorite moment was at the very end of the first round where Nunes dropped Florian with a solid right hook.
Where do these guys go from here?
It'll be very interesting to see what the UFC does with Florian here. Kenny says he's staying at 145 and Dana said it was "more than likely" he'd face Jose Aldo for the featherweight title next, but what about Chad Mendes? If Hatsu Hioki does indeed sign with the UFC, I couldn't think of a better first opponent than Florian. If not, the winner of the Tyson Griffin vs. Manny Gamburyan fight would be really good too.
Diego Nunes opened a lot of people's eye to the fact that he's a very tough guy at featherweight with his performance tonight. If Florian's going to get the title shot anyway, Nunes should definitely fight the winner of the Chad Mendes vs. Rani Yahya fight scheduled for UFC 133. Or Mark Hominick. Nunes vs. Hominick would be a very cool fight.
Watch it now, later, or never?
Now. This was a really entertaining fight that saw multiple momentum shifts and very good grappling, along with some very cool striking (especially from Nunes). This might have won fight of the night on a lot of other cards, but it was probably only the fourth-best fight on this card. That's how good UFC 131 was in general.
