Josh Thomson vs. Maximo Blanco Expected for Sepember 10th Strikeforce Event

Photo

Looks like Maximo Blanco got his wish. The former lightweight King of Pancrase and Sengoku vet was recently released by World Victory Road and said he was looking to ply his trade in North America. Last month, he told MMAWeekly who he'd like to face former Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh "The Punk" Thomson, and it sounds like that's exactly what will happen:

The former Sengoku fighter will face former Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh Thomson in his first bout with the promotion.

The news was confirmed to MMAWeekly.com by sources close to the match-up, stating bout agreements have been issued and signed for the fight expected to take place on an as yet unannounced Sept. 10 Strikeforce event.

Thomson's last outing was a disappointing loss to Tatsuya Kawajiri on the New Year's Eve Dynamite! show in Japan. He broke his hand in that bout and has been recovering from it ever since. Blanco, a medal winner in freestyle wrestling at the 2007 Pan-American games for his native Venezuela, is currently riding a 6 fight winning streak with a couple of nasty KO's in there. Maxi might not be a household name right now but he should be able to give Thomson all he can handle at the Sept 10th event, which has no location or venue as of yet.

The pace in this fight

Should be off the wall. I expect it to be like watching the Tasmanian Devil, just a big whirl of wind and stuff and the winner will be spit out.

Maximo via better name

Sidenote: Shortening it to “Maxi” is a disservice to how sick it really is

Loser? How many beers can YOU drink?

True, “Max Murderer” does have a nicer ring to it.

Still a Beer Monster.

He is also sorely lacking the nunchakus and Elvis hair the name entails.

SC reference, cool. I slice and dice ass with Rugi though, SC5 is on it’s fuckin way!!!

Anderson Silva, Edson Barboza, Jose Aldo, Charles Oliveira, Thiago Alves = Muay Thai wrecking machines!

I like Blanco's style

but I think he’s in trouble now that he’s state-side; don’t the unified rules prohibit curling into a ball and flying at one’s opponent? Ditto electrocution?

This comment is intended for entertainment purposes only. Any resemblence to the actual truth is entirely coincidental.

Simultaneous fighting game references about the same guy!

This is rich…

Great fight, and just a good fight for both of these fighters. Thomson is coming off a loss, but he is still a solid opponent, and I feel he’s the toughest opponent that Blanco will have to date.

Thompson is a shadow of the fighter he used to be.

Maxi is going to light him up.
