Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley Breakdown and Prediction

LAS VEGAS, NV - MAY 04: Boxers Manny Pacquiao (L) and Shane Mosley pose during the final news conference for their bout at the MGM Grand Hotel/Casino May 4, 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Pacquiao will defend his WBO welterweight title against Mosley on May 7, 2011 in Las Vegas. (Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images)

This post taken from Brent Brookhouse's coverage at SBNation.com/MMA of tonight's boxing bout between Manny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley.

Saturday, May 7, 2011 sees the world's number one pound-for-pound boxer, Manny Pacquiao, step back into the ring. Pacquiao will face "Sugar" Shane Mosley on Showtime pay-per-view. The PPV broadcast starts at 9:00 p.m. ET.

How They Match Up

Shane Mosley - 46-6-1 (39 KO), 39 years old, 5'9", 74" reach, Official Weight - 147 lbs

Manny Pacquiao - 52-3-2 (38 KO), 32 years old, 5'6", 67" reach, Official Weight - 145 lbs

Last 5 Fights

Shane Mosley - Draw - Sergio Mora, Loss (Dec) - Floyd Mayweather Jr., Win (TKO-9) Antonio Margarito, Win (KO-12) Ricardo Mayorga, Loss (Dec) Miguel Cotto

Manny Pacquiao - Win (Dec) - Antonio Margarito, Win (Dec) - Joshua Clottey, Win (TKO-12) - Miguel Cotto, Win (KO-2) - Ricky Hatton, Win (TKO-8) - Oscar De La Hoya

The Breakdown

Manny Pacquiao will enter the ring as a huge favorite. His ability to seemingly move to whatever weight class he wants and dominate his opponents has been amazing. Still, from the pre-fight hype one would be led to believe that all Manny has to do is show up, step in the ring and have his hand raised. It's not going to be that easy.

Shane Mosley is a fading star, yes. But he's a fading star who is battle tested and still possesses shocking power in both hands. He's also the bigger man by several inches. Once the fighters rehydrate after the weigh-in it's possible that Mosley will have upwards of a ten pound weight advantage.

But, as we saw in Pacquiao's fight against Margarito, being the smaller man does not mean he will be outmuscled or "fight small."

Pacquiao does have a bad habit lately of standing a bit stationary at times and inviting his opponent to hit him. If Mosley can land one of his powerful right hand shots he can drop Manny, even with Pacquiao's solid chin. Unfortunately for Mosley, if Manny decides to use movement and speed, he just can't match foot or handspeed in 2011. He just is not the quick and athletic fighter he was early in his career.

Everything comes down to Manny's ability to avoid the right hand and overwhelm with speed and combinations. It should be something that he is able to do, but Mosley has beaten men who "should" have beaten him in the past and he'll be doing everything he can to make it happen again.

Prediction

I spent weeks leading up to this fight thinking about how easy of a night it would be or Pacquiao. But over the last few days I've been unable to shake the feeling that something is going to happen. Manny can be hit, and Mosley can hit hard. It's entirely possible (hell, it's entirely likely) that Pacquiao busts Mosley up and even knocks him out. But I'm going to go with my gut and pick Mosley to score the TKO win somewhere between rounds 4 and 6.

generally agree wtih your assessment. Couple things

Manny should win this and if he doesnt it says more about the careful match making of Bob Arum recently than Manny. No offense Manny, but Mosley is so shot it isnt funny, you could clearly see in his fight with Mayweather and Mora that he couldnt pull the trigger when he wanted to.

He will have a chance because unlike Mora and Mosley, Manny Pacquiao is not a side to side fighter, he does try to turn you and work you at angles, he pretty much comes in and out with rapid fire combinations.

Mosley let Miguel Cotto outbox him in 2007 so not a good sign.

One thing I keep reminding myself is if history can repeat itself. The weekend following 9-11 Bernard Hopkins shocked the world when he stopped Felix Trinidad (an even seemingly bigger lock than Pac is tongiht). 10 years later the weekend after Bin Laden has been killed can another upset be in the making?

We will have to wait and see.

Ah yes, the prophetic King Mo. Who also predicted James Toney would beat Randy Couture (or at least surprise the world), that Chuck would KO Rich, and that Sponge would beat Overeem.

I really expected him to do well on commentary.

But that was so terrible.Zero insight. You might as well have had Franklin McNeil in there.

I figure this will go like the Mayweather / Mosely fight.

Mosely may stunn Pacquiao early, but he’ll fade and Pacquiao will run away with it.

let me make it clear

huge Mosley fan (even though he did HGH) I just think at this point in his career it isnt happening, if he still had blazing hand speed (he doesnt still fast but not what it was) then I would take him over Pac. Cause he could counter Pac, jsut dont see it happening

I don't trust athletes and coaches to be smart about any of that shit.

They’ll overuse it without a doctor supervising. And only the top guys will be able to pay for a doctor to supervise if they make that a requirement for approved usage. The advantages of being rich in MMA are already serious, with better coaching, dietitians, and even things like a wider grocery budget giving advantages to established and well paid fighters. I’d rather let the most talented guys rise instead of having more means to keep the established guys established.

You know

now that fight night is here, I really don’t think its that crazy of a decision to pick Mosely in this fight.

by thievesdont on May 7, 2011 4:19 PM EDT reply actions

If Mosley hadnt looked so shitty vs Sergio Mora I would probably pick against Pac (I picked DLH, Hatton, Clottey and Margarito) hey atleast I took Pac over Cotto haha

Good post

Can’t pick Mosley here, but I’ve got to hand it to him: he’s proven to be surprisingly durable when you consider his career on the whole. The first Oscar fight is still one of my favorite fights of all time (in terms of pure physics, I can’t remember a slugfest between two fighters so quick in hand), and he’s got guts, as he showed in the first fight with Forrest (sickest uppercut never to KO a fighter in any combat sport). I’ve been impressed with what Mosley has been able to do with so little left (for the elite at least), but unless Manny self destructs, he just doesn’t have the consistency of offense he’d need to beat Pacman. Now a prime Mosley…now that’s a hell of a fight.

would have to disagree with Pacquiaos footwork, he makes a good amoun t of mistakes on the footwork aspect, Marquez and Morales were able to use it against him. No one has been able to recently

You know what the last month & half in boxing has been choc a block with upsets It would not surprise me in the slightest If Sugar KO’s Pac.

Although my head is saying Manny wins a wide decision I just got this hunch there will a upset tonight maybe not the main event though I’m thinking more Pavlik vs Lopez.

Smart pick.

You’re an MMA guy, so if you’re wrong no one will care. But if you’re right, you’ll look like a genius.

:(

I have a bad feeling about this fight too, Mosley really hits hard and I dont think Manny can take several of those blows if he doesnt guard himself properly.

If Mosley wins that will basically make that coward Mayweather jump back in the spotlight and claim he is the greatest again

I't's hard to be the greatest when you only have two wins in the last three years.

Pacquiao should retire Mosely tonight,

via hamburger face. Predicting Mosely to win is admirable, and ballsy, but “C’mon, son.”
