The Ultimate Fighter 13: Team Lesnar vs. Team dos Santos Live Discussion (Episode 6)
Join Bloody Elbow on Wednesday nights to discuss the latest episode of the Ultimate Fighter 13, featuring former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar and rising star Junior dos Santos.
You know what's more exciting than the Ultimate Fighter? Manny Pacquiao's fight with Shane Mosley this weekend. And do you know what makes Manny Pacquiao more exciting? A 3-minute bit with Norm MacDonald:
For those who can't (or won't) watch the video, Norm places a $25,000 bet on Manny to beat Mosley at -800. Should Pacquiao win, Norm takes home $3,125. That's a 12.5% return on investment! You can't get that sort of rate anywhere!
Norm MacDonald bet 25k on Pacquiao. Payout is 3k. Heh, not worth it.
...sparking a healthy discussion between Leland, Tomas Rios, and myself about sports betting, MMA, and heavy favorites.
Simply put, so long as you have an edge on a bet, it doesn't matter how long the odds are; you have a profitable ticket in your hands (or on some server in Antigua).
For instance, Norm booked Manny at -800, which translates to a break-even rate of 88.9%. Should Pacquiao fight Mosley forever into eternity, Norm will make a fortune if the actual odds of a Manny victory are great than 89%.
* * *
You're getting two fights in one episode this week kids! Watching last week's fight reminded me of this clip from HBO's Talking Funny special.

I'll be honest
I didn’t expect the Norm Macdonald sports show to be that funny but I was wrong. It’s pretty hilarious
"He's bigger than you and he's blacker"
So funny haha.
It's improving
the first show was hard to watch.
But so was the first Tosh.O and I love that shit now.
Learn JiuJitsu, it's fun.
I thought the first show was great. The Blake Griffin segment is still the best thing I’ve seen thus far. Though “first-time slammer” was great too.

I stopped at the first show,
maybe I should give it a 2’nd chance.

Oh and I didn't think it was possible
but I think Lesnar might actually be a shittier coach than Rampage.
eh
I wouldn’t go that far, as Brock has at least tried to give decent cornering advice, compared to Rampage yelling, “STAND UP!” over and over.
Atleast Rampage
didn’t stare at one of his guys get injured, then tell everybody to take a shower and then walk out of the gym.
If you're into boxing...
You know what’s more exciting than the Ultimate Fighter? Manny Pacquiao’s fight with Shane Mosley this weekend.
People enjoy male figure skating, the WNBA, and Starcraft 2 matches too, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to feel left out for not watching it.
If you like MMA
You will probably find almost any Manny Pacquiao fight exciting.
My point was that's a very subjective statement.
I stopped watching very much boxing when many of the “big fights” stopped being competitive. Where’s the excitement in watching one guy destory another guy for 36 minutes? I don’t know if I can even motivate myself to catch a stream of this, much less buy the PPV.
Sounds like GSP
Lyoto Machida will literally kick your teeth out.

This kind of stuff is just about risk vs reward.
Each person has their own definition of risk. Some people think investing money in the stock market is too risky, while others thing keeping your money under a matress is too risky since it doesn’t grow or do anything for you. For Norm, a 25K bet for a 12.5% return might be perfectly fine (I don’t know. This is just an assumption for the purposes of this example), but to someone who, let’s say, makes $50K a year, betting $25K on a single fight for that kind of a return, may not be worth it, regardless of how the odds play out. Risk is very subjective. Personally? It’s not worth it. When you look at the percentage, 12.5% looks nice, but in absolute dollar terms, $3K is not worth it.
I’ll never understand how making 3k isn’t worth it. Only problem with betting heavy favourites like that is that you can win 10-20 of those bets, but all u need is one Fedor/werdum and you’re back to where u started or worse.

Betting that much in the unpredictable climate of combat sports just makes my head spin. Of course, for Norm… that money lost won’t matter.

True, but boxing has a whole lot less of an unpredictable nature than MMA. Betting that much on any MMA fight would be ridiculous.
There was a bettor at last yrs Australian open who bet $1,000,000 dollars on every one of Federers group stage matches. Each of which won him a 1% return of $10k. Savvy businessman or utterly stupid? (rules stated if fed retired hurt he would break even)
by MMAussie on May 4, 2011 7:23 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
See I find it really hard to call a guy who made an easy $50,000 stupid.
by MMAussie on May 4, 2011 7:27 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Boxing is less unpredictable, but I’m still hesitant to throw down that much on a single bet. If I had a relatively large bankroll, anything is possible though.

Yeh that’s the way I feel when it’s my own money were talking about. I mean, most of the successful sports bettors are all about the large single bets on heavy favourites. I myself, much prefer multi-ing up a bunch of heavy favourites to get a decent price. That way I don’t have to outlay as much and I get a better return. Obviously I have less chance of winning than with a single bet but in turn I also have less chance of suicide as I’m not losing $25,000 every time there is a huge upset, haha.
by MMAussie on May 4, 2011 7:41 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I wouldn’t really call it spreading the risk. By multi-ing up say 6 favourites paying what Manny is paying now I would get a return of 100% on my money. But if any one of those 6 were to lose, the bet is done. So I have more ways to lose, but to me the risk is less because I only have to outlay $3000 to win $3000 instead of $25k.
by MMAussie on May 4, 2011 8:02 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
“I mean, most of the successful sports bettors are all about the large single bets on heavy favourites.”
What are you basing this on?
Twitter: @Mike_Fagan_13
Shouldve put ‘most successful sports bettors, i.e people who make a very nice living out of it, who I have met and spoken to.’
by MMAussie on May 4, 2011 9:29 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I frequent a popular gambling forum and converse with these very people on sports betting (and specifically MMA) and “large single bets on heavy favorites” is not something that they are “all about.”
Twitter: @Mike_Fagan_13
So you’re telling me they prefer multis or betting on the underdog or what? All the big dollar bets 20k+ that I see are normally single bets, either straight win or line bets, placed on short priced favourites. A lot seem to be live bets as well.
by MMAussie on May 4, 2011 10:30 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Sigh…you can’t say “betting that much on a fight/match/game is ridiculous” without knowing that person’s bankroll.
Twitter: @Mike_Fagan_13
Fair enough, obviously if a multimillionaire puts a 50k bet on a random MMA fight it’s all well and good. What I really meant was, that anyone who is a serious bettor should seriously consider other sports to bet on. There is too many ways to get screwed over in MMA; bad judging, bad reffing, injuries. Not to mention flash knockouts and so forth. I stopped putting serious money on MMA right after Jardine/Mousasi.
by MMAussie on May 4, 2011 9:34 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
“Betting that much in the unpredictable climate of [insert sport here] just makes my head spin.”
This statement is made by people betting every single sport. MMA is no different.
Twitter: @Mike_Fagan_13
Sure. I agree. Hence why I wouldn’t bet 25k to win 3k.

it’s like when Joe Barhopper gets pissed about athletes complaining that they want $3 million dollars more during contract negotiations by going “these guys get paid too much!what’s the difference between $27 mil and $30 mil?” …well…three million dollars…or over 10% more than what he is already making…

If he has an edge and his bankroll can afford the loss, your statement is objectively wrong.
Twitter: @Mike_Fagan_13
How is it objectively wrong? Give me a break. If he can afford the loss… are we talking comfortably afford it? If that’s the case, I’ll agree with your statement. But chopping off a large chunk of your bankroll on a bet that only gains you 3k is just stupid, especially when other great bets exist at better odds.

If Manny’s actually winrate is above 90%, it’s not stupid. It’s profitable.
You can bet heavy favorites and still exercise bankroll management. I’m not suggesting Norm does, but I also don’t believe Norm bets on sports to make money, either.

This season truthfully might be the worst yet
The fights aren’t bad, but the fighters themselves (much respect) all seem so far away from the UFC that I feel like not a single one will stick around. Lesnar doesn’t really have a personality, and JDS is trying but I get annoyed at him cheering through the fights in his broken english.

That’s prickish/douchey thing to say about yourself. Wearing a suit while gettin wrapped doesn’t make you a class act.
Also I kinda felt bad for coach Polley after that. He was sitting there laughing all happy and stuff and then he gets told to get lost. Kinda harsh
