UFC 130 Payouts: Rampage Jackson, Frank Mir Both Score $250K
UFC 130: Rampage vs Hamill is in the books. It was a bit of a star-crossed event as it was originally planned to feature a lightweight title rematch between champion Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard to resolve their brutal and brilliant tie at UFC 125.
Instead of that title fight, the UFC was forced to serve up Quinton Jackson vs Matt Hamill, which was itself an alternate for the originall planned Rampage vs Thiago Silva bout that had to be called off after Silva failed his post UFC 125 drug test.
MMA Mania has gotten the salaries for UFC 130 from the Nevada State Athletic Commission:
Quinton "Rampage" Jackson: $250,000 (no win bonus) def. Matt Hamill: $32,000
Frank Mir: $250,000 (includes $125,000 win bonus) def. Roy Nelson: $15,000
Travis Browne: $16,000 ($8,000 win bonus) def. Stefan Struve: $21,000
Rick Story: $34,000 ($17,000 win bonus) def. Thiago Alves: $ 33,000
Brian Stann: $46,000 ($23,000 win bonus) def. Jorge Santiago: $36,000
Demetrious Johnson: $12,000 ($6,000 win bonus) def. Miguel Torres: $30,000
Tim Boetsch: $36,000 ($18,000 win bonus) def. Kendall Grove: $28,000
Gleison Tibau: $50,000 ($25,000 win bonus) def. Rafaello Oliveira: $10,000
Michael McDonald: $12,000 ($6,000 win bonus) def. Chris Cariaso: $4000
Renan Barao: $10,000 ($5,000 win bonus) def. Cole Escovedo: $6,000

Yeah I was thinking the same. 50k for fighting lower end guys seem like a pretty sweet deal.

Fight contracts generally scale upwards with more fights in the promotion and a new scale is set with every new contract. Tibau has 14 UFC fights and 9 wins so hes probably on his third or so contract.

How can White be unhappy with Roy? You get what you pay for, and Roy isn’t getting paid much.

This just shows how much Roy did not belong on TUF. Coutr McGee deserves this kind of pay at the moment, but not Roy.

Great Gap
There is a great gap between the salary of a “star” fighter and “middle range” fighter!
I guess that must be regulated because it can create a bad feeling for the fighters who receive low payment.
You'd think Roy would be skinnier...
…since he’s not paid enough to be able to eat.

Uh let’s see, Roy fights about 2.5 times a year thats 37.5k My sister who is a 12th grade english teacher makes 38k a year. She eats. Also take into account that 37.5k is not including sponorships. I think Roy is doing just fine…

Does she lose roughly half her net income on managers, trainers and various other fees, though?
by Shnak on May 31, 2011 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions 5 recs
“various other fees” you mean taxes, everyone loses there. And she may not lose anything to managers or trainers but she also doesnt get a great portion of her income from sponsorships last I checked.

You’re going to complain about Roy’s pay but be content with a teacher making 37.5k…
Andre's Posse
And where did you get that I wasn’t content with a teacher making 37.5K?

Hell, I would be happy to make that and get 2.5 months off every year (along with all of the other breaks).
Yeah,
it’s not like teachers need to go to college or be qualified in any way to receive their position. And they’re almost making 40K? Well fuck man! They see us rollin in our Ford Taurus, patrolllin they tryin to catch us ridin dirrrty!

In my opinion, teachers are some of the most under-appreciated members of our society. I love and support the members of our armed services, but I see no reason why teachers, doctors, and charity workers should not be as celebrated (if not more) our nation’s trained killers.
But still, Roy Nelson should be making more money for taking brain damage for our entertainment.

Taxes
aren’t just paid by fighters. I pay taxes. You probably do too. And if you do any freelance / contract work, you pay your portion + the employer’s portion like every other self employed person in America. There isn’t a special higher tax bracket for fighters.
As far as manager, trainer, and agent fees, that’s part of being a fighter. You can’t own your own brand / business and expect to never pay out of pocket for expenses. I’m sure those people bring in a lot more money for the fighter than the fighter pays them. If not, the fighter is making poor hiring choices.
What you’re complaining about is analogous to someone attending college. You spend some money now to make more money in the future.
And of course your take home pay is less than your gross pay. My net pay is about 2/3 of my gross pay. And that’s before insurance co-pays, gym memberships, rent, food, gas, etc. You know… expenses.

and after sponsorships it’s going to be higher. No company wants to pay to put a decal on my ass when I go to work. Dana White never writes me a check in the shower when I perform exceptionally well at my job either.
It’s gross pay for all of us, sure I don’t have a manager or a trainer but I do have $500+ a month just in babysitting cost and around $900 a month in travel/living expenses away from home that go with my line of work. Sure Roy is underpaid but then most of us are and we all have expenses.
Does your sister eat as much as Roy?

good question
Nelson is an abject lesson to name fighters considering going the TUF route out of desperation. talk about a hit to hte bottom line.

Would Roy had been better off losing to Schaub in the finale?

Assuming they didn’t cut the runner up as with years past, would it have been better for him?
by Spider_Vemon on May 31, 2011 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions
He’s still under the TUF contract even if he doesnt win
"You should work for 15 minutes to knock your opponent out, submit him, or improve your position to give yourself the best chance of doing either." - Dan Hardy
To clarify, if he loses he doesn’t really have any options but to take whatever deal the UFC gives him and coming off a loss in front of millions of viewers he would be in terrible shape (no pun intended)
"You should work for 15 minutes to knock your opponent out, submit him, or improve your position to give yourself the best chance of doing either." - Dan Hardy
But they didn't cut Schaub?
I’m probably being stupid, but I don’t get that.
Let the fighters fight, let the referees ref, but dear God, don't let the judges judge.
It's a Catch-22 for Roy
He may not have gotten into the UFC otherwise. At the time (late 2009, I think), Strikeforce may not have seemed like such a great option.

Quinton most assuredly got a cut of PPV revenue
Seems that’s the standard practive for their top stars. Nice base pay, no “win bonus” with a lucrative back end based on sales.
I have a hunch though that the PPV buyrate for this card will make Quinton wish he did get a win bonus…
Here's a fun little teaser question regarding UFC pay
Going by declared salaries name the highest paid fighter in each weight class
http://unintelligentdefense.blogspot.com
Roy making less than struve? that's sad
also surprised story made more than alvez pre-bonus
also what was santiago’s FOTN bonus worth?
He actually makes more, because 21000$ = 14602€
And usually stuff is more expensive in the Netherlands.

Something to remember about Roy Nelson and taxes is that if he really only does pay taxes on what is declared by the state athletic commissions, he will be in a low tax bracket. I think the easy thing to think is professional athletes = big money = very high tax bracket, but if he doesn’t make that much he won’t get killed in taxes. Guys at the top like Brock, Rampage, GSP pay more in taxes than Roy Nelson earns in a year.
Wow, I wouldn’t think about stepping in a cage for 15k at that level of fighting. Roy should have gotten 6 figures for this. Ridiculous. Surprised he didn’t leave the UFC
Werdum beat Fedor, Dos Santos beat Werdum, Joaquim Ferreira beat Dos Santos. Therefore Ferreira is WAAAAY better than Fedor. Keep MMA math alive!
Kinda puts some context around Dana's Mir comments
guy gets paid an awful lot to be involved with uninspiring fights. Full disclosure is that I still haven’t seen Mir-Nelson, but at least I can see how Dana was testy even after a win.
Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.
It was a great performance by Mir, he dominated Nelson. Maybe it wasn’t the most exciting fight ever but I had nothing to complain about. If you check the comments in the post yesterday about Dana backpedaling on his criticism, you’ll see most people are in the same line of thinking as me. I can see why Roy would get harsh criticism for not bringing more of a fight, but IMHO there was nothing about Mir to complain about that night.
by Horselover Fat on May 31, 2011 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions
I obviously didn’t see it, and can’t form an opinion, but I’ll take your word for it. It just struck me reading this that Dana may have a) still been thinking about that CroCop ugliness and b) realizing that Mir is one of his top 4-5 paid guys and thinking that he wanted a little more out of him.

I am a Mir hater and was very impressed by Mir tbh
fight wasn’t exciting or anything, but he out muscled him to the point that it was not competitive and worked in some shots too. Did not expect him to just shut Roy down like that.

Dont TUF winners get a 6 figure salary??
I guess he has to win 3 fights in a calendar year or something?? Damn 15K is LOW.
So far as I know the contract is $100 000 over 6 fights.

So since it will take Roy 2-3 years to complete all of those fights, it is more like a 40-50K year salary without bonuses. Shit he might have been able to make more money if he lost TUF.
by captainStevo on May 31, 2011 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions
Damn, maybe Roy would be better off getting cut
He could probably make at least that much fighting in Bellator and not take beatings like he did in the Mir and JDS fights.

TUF winnir retribution needs to change? Roy winning 15k for showing in his 4th fight with the UFC and being co-main event. of course his performance was not the best (he looked bad), but the salary is laughable
by Carlos Estrada-Ibars Martínez on May 31, 2011 5:54 PM EDT reply actions
Wasn’t this the 2nd co-main event for Roy, the other one being his fight against JDS? I mean, they can’t be using Roy as a jumping board into the elite by saying JDS and Mir beat one of the best HW’s in the world and then pay Roy peanuts. That just doesn’t make sense to me.
Two things to think about:
Roy is not stupid.
&
Roy has lost 4 of his last 6 fights.

Really.. 21k only?
Nelson made a point in the countdown that his preparation for Mir will differ because of the training facilities he can afford.. Guess he wasn’t lying.
Considering the money the UFC makes per event this number is no acceptable.
Clearly he makes money from sponsorship,
What other income does he generate? filming the countdown?
BE sure you’ve done if before, but can we get an article about fighter earning encompassing incomes rendered aside from the fights.. and ‘backroom bonuses’. Just to get an idea of how hardly done by some are/aren’t.
Is it just me or does Roy Nelson just seem like Dana Whites heavyweight hate child.
At Xtreme Couture
you can teach 2-3 times a week and have all your gym fees taken care of. Kampmann did this for quite some time, so did Gray, I remember Hendricks teaching some wrestling/ MMA classes here and there… John Alessio regularly led the best class i’ve ever taken in combat sports (general MMA).
Nelson could teach grappling once or twice a week and have a free pass with all the top trainers, exercise equipment, and sparring partners available.
