Police Investigating UFC Legend Matt Hughes in Alleged Nose Breaking Brawl

Photo via Fanhouse.

UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes is known for his down home mid-western simple man values. He's an outspoken Christian conservative and family man who's been critical of other fighters such as Randy Couture for their lifestyle choices. Now TMZ is reporting that Illinois police want to talk to Hughes about an incident in a bar:

TMZ has confirmed 37-year-old Hughes was named in a police report filed in Taylor Springs, IL ... stemming from an April 23 incident at a place called Trails End Bar and Grill.

According to a source who was inside the bar, Hughes got into an argument with a male bar patron ... which led to some forceful shoving.

Sources tell us ... the woman is alleging Hughes pushed the other man into her ... and she suffered a broken nose in the collision. TMZ obtained a photo of the woman's face taken after the incident.

Hopefully this is all smoke and no fire. Doesn't sound like the Matt Hughes UFC fans have come to know and love/loathe.

Hughes is expected to fight Diego Sanchez at UFC 135.

How many people actually make a "shit ton" of money in MMA?

Compare that number with the amount of fighters who gets their asses kicked for a living and are just getting by, suffering brain damage and serious injuries along the way.

Hopefully mat covers her bills and flips her some cash. That would be a stand up thing to do.

Its common knowledge. You go to a bar you have accepted that small risk. Imo

Like I said matt should cover her bills and such if its true. I don’t think its criminal. J.snow would be the guy to ask.

That’s a valid argument (assumption of risk) but very very unlikely to be accepted by the court in this situation – as Elliot said above, people don’t assume the risk of getting injured in a fight just by entering a bar

Outlandish behavior at a bar

is par for the course with Hughes. In his book he talks about ordering a beer and taking a piss right on the bar, instead of walking to the bathroom which is like 20 feet away. And for all the “Good Christian” talk of Hughes, this is a guy who had a child out of wedlock with an ex girlfriend. I didn’t like him on the show, and I don’t the kind of person he portrays himself as.

I really like him as a fighter, but that has nothing to do with how I feel about him personally. I’m not bashing Hughes the fighter, i’m saying that it wouldn’t surprise me if this is true.

I’m not going to get into some religious debate with you because this is not the place nor is it allowed here, but that is the very idea behind the Christian faith, that becoming Born-Again and repenting of your sins and accepting Jesus Christ will give you passage into Heaven and make you new.

It doesn’t erase what he did, but people change and most all true born-again believers have a complete turn around as to how they act and who they are, not matter they did in their past.

Taking the religious aspect out of it, the penal system has many criminals who serve their time and become “rehabilitated” and re-enter the world completely different people

Well, it's good you think that.

And if someone changes their life for the better, good for them. That said, Matt Hughes is still a monumental dick, and continued to be one well after his wife convinced him to reluctantly join Christianity.

I like him as a fighter, but Matt Hughes is an asshole. It would only be fighter bashing if it weren’t true, and if you read 1 chapter of his book, you would know this. Here’s a pretty good summary of it:

I haven’t read the book, but I remember that thread and from my understanding it was built as a Matt bashing thread. Much of what was said was out of context and/or simply didn’t happen the way it was potrayed to have.

If I recall getting past the first few pages of that thread brought direct quotes from the book which went against the summary completely…

by Empty Thoughts on May 3, 2011 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I have read the book,

and like I said, it was exaggerated, but not much. Hughes really did make fun of Tim Sylvia, he and his brother really did beat up his dad, he really did knock up his girlfriend and was pissed when she decided to keep the kid, he really did kill a bunch of baby pigs with his buddies and throw the testicles at eachother, etc etc ad nauseam.

by ElliotMatheny on May 3, 2011 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions

And what I said still stands. Context matters.

- Hughes father was supposedly emotionally abusive to him and Mark. Their attacking him was less their just being randomly violent and more their being pushed far beyond driven.

- His girlfriend keeping a child that he didn’t want isn’t a reason for him to be upset?

- His supposedly trying to have sex during a operation recovery simply never happened.

- etc etc…

Sure from my understanding there are moments in the book that don’t paint him as the best picture even taken in context, but when you use that review as part of your argument you have lost and and all validity already.

by Empty Thoughts on May 3, 2011 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

As aforementioned,

I only read half of the book before it became unbearable. And also, as I mentioned before- the review is exaggerated, and only picks out the negative passages. That said, none of those things are inaccurate. They actually happened.

I don’t know what book you read, but it definitely said in the book that Hughes had sex with his ex girlfriend the day after she had breast augmentation surgery, and was still on pain pills. She asked him to stay with her.

they get drunk on wine in church?

Where do good Christians get drunk at?
I haven’t ever drank with any, Lots of bad Christians, never ones that follow their own rules.

Maybe like Pud says it was his twin bro, but even so… he pushed a guy away from him that was probably starting crap and that guy ran into this girl who was probably behind him in the crap too. Unless there is more we aren’t hearing, I hope this fails.

Thank you

for not going with “Matt Hughes Breaks Woman’s Nose in Bar” as the headline, as others have done. Using violence against women to boost page views is about as low as it gets.

Doesn’t sound like a very Christian thing to do

by devious1 on May 3, 2011 11:16 AM EDT reply actions

On the contrary...

… this is exactly what I’d expect someone like Matt Hughes to do.

He’s a hypocrite for criticising people like Couture, when his own life’s been majorly messed up.

He basically said that although he seemed like a decent guy, Hughes didn’t approve of his “actions” (IE past with women).

I recall a passage in which Matt said he eventually forgave him

It made me wonder if Randy ever noticed or cared about Hughes’ disapproval.

While I don’t think much of Hughes, I think even less of stories made up of nothing but one-sided accusations. Could very well turn out to be nothing.

by simpsycho on May 3, 2011 12:09 PM EDT reply actions

So, if a person shoves someone else, and that someone collides with a third person and causes injury, the first person walks away scott free.

I think the woman has grounds to at least sue Hughes for something. It’s not like her case is baseless if what she said happened did, in fact, happen.

by Unabomberman on May 3, 2011 12:10 PM EDT reply actions

he can be sued for intentional battery of both the man and the woman: the man because he pushed him and the woman by transferred intent. Of course, the shove could have been in self-defense.

by cmsove on May 3, 2011 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions

It's more than a bit early to be voicing worthwhile opinions here.

For starters it was a Bar and Grill. Something which in my area basically just means a resturant capable of serving alcohol. Hughes could have been there eating dinner with his family for all we know, not having had a single drink. He might have also been there alone having twenty. Nothing is said here to judge either way.

As for he pushing, again it doesn’t say anything as to why. Perhaps he pushed the guy because he was pushed. Perhaps he didn’t push him at all. Or perhaps he got mad and pushed the guy. Again, we just don’t know yet based on this small article.

Just because it is Hughes and people have a mad on for him doesn’t mean everybody should be condemning him already. For all we know it could have been self-defense just as much as it was some form of battery.

Broken nose my ass

Have you seen the ‘after’ pics?

There is a little yellowing on the bridge of her nose and under her eyes. Every broken nose I have ever seen results in bright purple ‘raccoon eyes’, not a little yellow bruising.

It looks more like she got an ‘owie’ and is looking to make a little money off the deal.

by Steve4192 on May 3, 2011 12:24 PM EDT reply actions

broken noses don’t cause raccoon eyes homie. Its gotta be something a heck of a lot worse to get raccoon eyes

I said she looked normal.

Especially for a barfly with a broken nose. What bar do you hang out at that this woman doesn’t look average?

Nasty pointy nose, thin lips with old lady wrinkles around them and a weird looking face are you serious? Definitely not average looking. And I don’t hang around in bars, I think that is the crux of the situation here. That’s what I should have said. Why is he in a bar? MMA Hall of Famer with three kids shouldn’t be at a bar in my opinion. I’m 24 and I don’t hang out in bars cause this is what happens.

by GuyMontague on May 3, 2011 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Bar & Grill does not really equal the same thing as a Bar. At least not where I live.

Is that nose actually broken?

All the broken noses I’ve seen look more distorted than that.

wait....how is this different from the Matt Hughes we know

Read this hilariously biased summary of Huges’s Autobiography: Made in America
http://www.sherdog.net/forums/f44/summary-matt-hughes-book-made-america-965216/

“Matt cheats his way through college getting A’s in classes he proudly says he never attended. He and the other wrestlers bully everybody at Lincoln Junior College, and break a bunch of shit. They tip over people’s cars, and flood the dorms on purpose. We reach a new low, when he also makes light of the fact that one of his college buddies could not read or write. He then takes time to bash Frank Trigg, saying that he ‘never became anything.’ "

by Robust23 on May 3, 2011 12:35 PM EDT reply actions

I referenced that earlier in the thread.

The crazy thing is, I read the book (well, half of it, couldn’t make it through the whole thing it became so unbearable), and that summary isn’t even that exaggerated. Matt explains all this horrible shit he’s done, and honestly seems proud of it all.

my bad. Skipped over the thread. Damn, I thought it was an exaggeration…
It’s hard to understand why he’s revered as he is when he’s such a pompous douche.
I got no respect for that baby pig tormenter and a bar fight is EXACTLY what I would expect from him.
