UFC 130 Results and The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale Preview on 106.7 The Fan's MMA Nation

Live streaming video by Ustream

Remember, our time slot is Sundays 9 to 11 p.m. ET. First things first: have you seen the MMA Nation tab on BloodyElbow.com? It's got everything you could possibly need to connect with the show including this important info:

How to Listen

How to Interact

Today on "MMA Nation" we've got a ton of stuff to get to in breaking down everything from last night's UFC 130: Rampage vs. Hamill.

  • How would you rate the event overall?
  • Does Rampage Jackson deserve a title shot? Are you confident he has a chance against Jon Jones, anyway?
  • Why was Matt Hamill even in a fight with Rampage to begin with? Was he anything more than a sparring partner for Jackson?
  • Should Roy Nelson lose weight to have any future in the UFC?
  • Where does this put Frank Mir in the UFC heavyweight division?
  • Rick Story: can he defeat Jon Fitch en route to a title shot against Georges St. Pierre? Where does this leave Thiago Alves in the UFC welterweight division?
  • Was Miguel Torres robbed? What about Chris Cariaso? And did the monitors have any real impact on judging results?
  • How far is Brian Stann from a middleweight title shot with his crushing defeat of Jorge Santiago? How grotesquely overrated is talent that competes in Japan?
  • Is Stefan Struve taking too many KOs for his own health?

We've had a lot of guests in recent weeks, so today's we're opening the phone lines the ENTIRE show. We'll take all of YOUR calls. It's toll free anywhere in North America, so don't be shy.

"MMA Nation" will air tonight 9:00 p.m. ET to 11:00 p.m. ET on 106.7 The Fan. To listen live over the Internet, go to The Fan's website and click "Listen Live".

i think the future of thiago alves relies on the outcome of rick story's next fight.

Now before you laugh in my face, let me explain why. If Story beats Fitch with the same game plan nobody will be saying how bad or overrated Alves is. If Story gets waxed by the standard Fitch blanketing then Alves has a pretty big mountain to climb to get back into the top 3-5. What do you think??

by purplehazelett on May 29, 2011 9:32 PM EDT reply actions

I can agree with that.

Also, anyone who watched the fight knows that Alves won the VAST majority of the striking exchanges, and Story won that fight based on judges favoring any guy who presses the opponent into the fence.

Great discussion, gotta chime in on the Damage vs. Control debate

Damage is the #1 unconditionally.

From another interview with Nick Lembo:

"When drafting the proposed unified rules for New Jersey in 2000, I wanted to utilize the word damage in the definition of effective striking, but was cautioned against it since it could be a tool for detractors in the sport’s early days. Obviously, strikes that cause damage or a/k/a ‘the significance of such legal strikes’ should be given greater weight."

That’s why everything is preceded by “effective” and control measures are always secondary to effective grappling and striking. In every state that uses the prioritized unified rules, control is prioritized secondary to striking and grappling.

And to address Elliot’s comment, I feel the opposite: control by position is easily identifiable, it’s a fact: the guard is passed, a guy is mounted, etc. It’s tangible with no room for subjectivity.

Damage is highly subjective, and the perfect example is B.J. Penn. He can take an unhindered bashing directly to the face for several minutes and not show a mark. Obviously, certain elements of damage are objective, like a gaping wound, Hominick-ish hematoma, or a knockdown.

Well, although position is identifiable,

different positions mean different things for different fighters. Dominick Cruz is a good wrestler, and has serviceable submission skills, but is by no means a destroyer from top position. Joe Benavidez is fucking impossible to hold down. Even though Cruz took Benavidez down several times in their first fight, and claimed side control on more than one occasion, it didn’t matter because Benavidez is impossible to hold down, (oddly enough) ESPECIALLY from side control.

Here you made a common mistake- equating damage with what I consider cosmetic damage. Damage, in general, is just the quantity and quality of strikes, slams, and (sometimes) near submissions. Visible damage can be a good indicator of strikes landing, but is only a smaller part of the umbrella of damage in general.

Question though

As mere observers of the fight, isn’t all damage “cosmetic”? We just have to judge what we see?

I totally get what you’re saying. But even knockdowns could be slips, some guys get rocked easy but recover quickly (Eddie Alvarez), someone stumbling could be from a clash of heads, a cut could be from the grazing of a glove, etc. It’s just difficult to nail it down.

As for your position comment, I’ll stick to what we were agreeing about on the Johnson/Torres page, which is that side-control is side-control, no matter who is on top or bottom. Benavidez escaping against others doesn’t mean he’ll do the same against whoever his existing opponent is. Guard, half, side, and mount are all different positions with different levels of advantage no matter who has them.

Why did you just say "mayhem"Miller from Bully Beatdown

not Mayhem Miller former Strikeforce Title Challenger? Is it because he is more well known in America for his tv show?

How do you solve a problem like Roy Nelson?

Fighters are just a far removed breed apart from other professional athletes. None come close, especially with money involved.

Nelson is way too old to cut that much weight. Yes 240 is a good goal, his gas tank is his biggest liability. His chin is sick.

Yep. But he will always have a hjome in the UFC due to the fact that he is

entertaining both inside and outside the cage. He also has chin for daaaaays!

Frank Mir finally fought someone who he can bully- his strategy from last night would be way more difficult to implement against the top 4.

i agree. I think a fight with CC would provide a good indication of where they are both

at during this point of their respective careers. If CC wins, Roy may never get back to the the top of the heap; however, Roy must not only win, but win big. A UD will not push him far up the ladder….if at all, so he must dominate. A rematch with Rothwell is a no win situation. Travis Browne or Cheick Kongo would also be good. Kongo is a good gatekeeper.

I would to like to see Mir use his strikes to set up his submission game.

Luke,

it’s funny you mention that MMA fighters, media, and fans are sensitive, because I have a bit of a gem re: that issue.

Summer of ’09 I trained with Xtreme Couture, and long story short, I had a contract dispute with them because they kept withdrawing money from my account, despite me thinking that I had terminated the contract at the end of the summer.

So anyways, my dad’s a lawyer and he helped me out, had a correspondence with XC (mainly Ryan Couture, who handles a lot of the clerical stuff). After a while, my dad had a quick meeting with their lawyer at a coffee shop, and she said that Randy & Co. felt my father was bullying them (legally, of course).

Just kind of a funny little thing. Randy Couture, one of the most badass guys ever, feeling “bullied” by me and my pa.
