UFC 130 Fight Card: Matt Hamill Profile Videos
The UFC's Youtube page has put out a couple of short profile videos on UFC 130 main eventer Matt "The Hammer" Hamill. They're made to be inspirational, speaking about how Hamill has had to overcome his deafness to get ahead in life in the first video, and about how he gets inspiration from his daughter in the second. In addition, his manager/trainer Duff Holmes discusses how his grandfather built mental toughness into Matt. It also covers some preparation for his fight with Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. Here's part 1:
You can watch part two and see a few quotes from both videos after the jump.
Matt Hamill (10-2)
Win Tito Ortiz - Decision (Unanimous) UFC 121
Win Keith Jardine - Decision (Majority) TUF 11 Finale
Win Jon Jones -DQ (Illegal Downward Elbows) TUF 10 Finale
The number one thing I like about MMA is the challenge. And I can prove everyone wrong. I can climb up the mountain and reach the top. Everyone though I was like a gatekeeper. No.
I've never had a submission before so I need to add a submission in my book.
The fans are really critical for me, especially the deaf community. I'm a very unique fighter, you don't see a lot of deaf fighters in the UFC, even handicapped fighters. But when they stand, they've got all their energy flowing in my body. And they get me really motivated.

This is real MMA training. Not so much what Matts doing but how it’s coordinated. There has to be a general who directs everything. Sparring and rolling with the highest levels of everything combined with a master general equals bringing ones full potential out.
No one has ever had a better camp IMO than Rashad had for the Rsmpage fight. That was all about explosion.
Hamills training seems weak. If you gave Hamill that camp that Evans had , Hamill might pull it together. Hamills real problem is that he’s too slow. Obviously he can only max out his speed so much, but that should be his main focus.
Hamills gameplans are bad too, he is not a fluid striker, he will never be a fluid striker . He simply cannot do it.
Hamill has good enough striking to compete, he should have his camp focused on him being an explosive wrestler with a good top game.
Man I need to be a general guy, I really feel I have a better angle on how these guys move than most . That just wreaks of delusions of Granduer don’t it?

Hamills skillset is pretty limited. His takedowns are very slow and forced , his defensive wrestling is ridiculous though. But his striking although heavy handed enough to make anyone take him serious, lacks clear fluidity and he’s not even able to make himself effective. His striking is good enough to fight defensively ala Cro Cop , but if that’s your main tool your fucked.
Ryan Bader is a much better version of Matt Hamill. Would love to see that fight to see if I’m right.
