Star-divide

Based on the premise that all MMA rankings are subjective but that it’s still useful and informative to know who the online MMA community as a whole ranks as the best fighters in MMA, we collect and average the rankings of the top MMA websites to produce our consensus rankings. We compile the top MMA rankings from each of our sources and award 25 points for a first place ranking, 16 for a 10th place ranking, 1 for a 25th place ranking. A formula is used to "normalize" the data so all fighters are awarded points from those lists that do not include a full 25 fighters. This formula ensures that each ranking site awards the same number of total points regardless of how many fighters they choose to rank. Each fighter’s total is divided by the number of possible points to determine their standing in the Consensus Rankings.

i know i’m probably the only one, but i think carwin is severely overrated in ratings
his win over mir may of made him top 10, but i dont think top 5

Sounds like Springfield's got a discipline problem.

This always happens. I don’t understand why. People immediately move contenders up, even if they haven’t actually fought. It’s absurd.

Okami moved up to #2 just recently as well

Everyone should know these rankings are bullshit, its worthless to even acknowledge them as rankings.

We’ve already established that winning and getting pushed on TV helps you magically shoot up the rankings, but apparently you don’t even have to fight if you’re on TV enough. Meanwhile Werdum and Bigfoot slide back, presumably sucked into the collapse of Fedor’s ranking, who got bitchslapped down to 9th behind two fighters whose most recent conquests are Todd Duffee and The Ghost of Michael CroCop.

These rankings are dying and you empty suits are running around trying to pin some Russian’s pelt to the wall.

Glares at Subo

Why Subo?

Jim Genia’s rankings were the ones that struck me as particularly terrible. Overeem #2? JDS #7? Werdum #9? Fedor #11 (at best)? Jesse Holland’s rankings are also terrible, but I have come to expect that from him. Genia’s ranking being that awful surprised me.

...you did?

Unfortunately, Mir and Schaub have both won fights more recently than Fedor has.

Fedor hanging in the top 10 for old time’s sake mixed with wishful thinking. They need a cruiserweight division.

This

I used to like the CW idea, until I realized how abysmally thin HW is already.

by Dave Strummer on May 26, 2011 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions

i hear you on CW

the problem is a lot of the top ten HWs would be CW (people like JDS and Cain, for instance). do you really see enough talent on this list to justify splitting it into two divisions?

maybe, in the future, when fat bastards like cole konrad and monsters like brock lesnar are perpetually smothering 230 pound dudes, then we should think about it. until then, i wouldn’t want to water down HW any more than it already is.

Okay, I mean to say I need a cruiserweight division.

by Scabby Knuckle on May 26, 2011 10:32 AM EDT reply actions

What would your cruiserweight division look like?

What would the weight limit be? Who would be its top fighters? What would it do to the quality of competition at light heavyweight and heavyweight?

by MichaelDavidSmith on May 26, 2011 10:33 AM EDT up reply actions

I’d go for a 225 or 230 pound limit, with HW being an unlimited weight class. HW will always be “thin” until more big guys develop broader skillsets and better cardio. Just because it’s a thin crop today doesn’t mean it always will remain so. Particularly when you see how many football players are incorporating MMA into their training regimens, along with natural growth in the sport at the amateur level, the CW and HW classes would eventually get better depth, I believe. Having a CW division would allow some of the LHW guys to fight closer to their natural weight, with some of the 185 guys able to move up to LHW. There would be some adjustments initially, but I wouldn’t base the forecast for the strength of a CW division on who’s fighting at whatever weight today. Having a 60 pound spread between the current heavier weight classes produces too many “tweeners.” Just my take on it.

by Scabby Knuckle on May 26, 2011 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Having a 230 or 235 CW and an unlimited HW?!? Not a turrible idea at all…I like it.

Barnett has not faced, let alone beat, a top ten heavyweight since 2006. He has done nothing since then to justify a top ten ranking.

And Big Nog has been inactive for over a year, and his last win was in August 2009, but you still have him 4 places higher than fedor. Care to explain?

JDS has been #2 on my personal ranking for awhile now

but I’m still curious as to how he and Werdum traded places without either of them being active. Voters be fickle.

Because JDS is fighting for the title now, and almost nobody that works on these rankings have a lick of sense.

by JudokaLinker on Jun 8, 2011 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Mir too high (as always), Roy Nelson way too low. Big Nog too high. Fedor deserves #9 until he likely loses to Henderson. Werdum deserves to still be #2 until the Reem horse stomps him. Rizzo and Conrad above Struve… ROFL!

Lastly.. putting Schaub above Nelson is wrong IMO. Nelson knocked him out badly and dominated him before KOing him. Losing a decision to JDS shouldn’t hurt Nelson and beating a completely washed up Cro Cop shouldnt help Schaub much.

Werdum beat Fedor, Dos Santos beat Werdum, Joaquim Ferreira beat Dos Santos. Therefore Ferreira is WAAAAY better than Fedor. Keep MMA math alive!

I don't know why you guys keep letting Jesse Holland submit a ballot

It’s seriously fucking shameful.

Matt Roth too.

I’m all for the idea that this is a compilation of different opinions and what not, and even if I don’t agree I can see a defensible argument for most points of view, but those two guys submit such ridiculous ideas that it undermines the entire consensus rankings.

Your reasoning for your rankings at LHW is downright ludicras. Like indefensibly so.

Which one are you referring to?

Cause I explained at the bottom my reason. And as I said. I don’t see me jokingly ranking Jones #5 which doesn’t change the overall ranking is worse than Iole ranking Hamill over Phil Davis, Lorenz Larkin over Alex Gustafsson, or Leland ranking Feijao over Phil Davis. Mine had no effect on the rankings. Those have a real effect on Davis’ place.

Quibbling over the #9 guy is a bit different than what you did, would you not agree?

Me having a little fun and have no affect on the end result?

No, there is a difference. Mine was meant to stir everyone up which it did without causing any disparity in the #1 spot (consensus!) while rankings of Feijao and Hamill over Davis have a real impact.

Okay, I’m basically JDS’ biggest fan, but even I know that there is absolutely no way he’s number one. Same with Overeem. People that submit rankings like that shouldn’t have enough authority to be part of USAT/SBN rankings.

Schaub should be UNDER Nelson… RIGHT?

…and still no Cormier, who I would take at even money against at least 10 guys ranked, and probably more like 15…
