This weekend is honestly probably better than last weekend was, as far as free boxing goes (unless you dont have HBO). There are several good cards on television featuring inspiring matchups, up and comers and Bernard Hopkins chasing history.
First up this weekend will be ESPN's Friday Night Fights, The main event should be a fun barnburner because it features Joel Julio (a former highly touted prospect, 85-0 as an amateur) fighting against Anges Adjaho, another fighter that would rather brawl than box. Adjeho is perhaps best known for giving Zab Judah, Nate Campbell and other known fighters a tough time in sparring sessions. This main event is a good, entertaining fight, especially for ESN, but it isn't even the main reason for watching IMO. On the undercard is Sadam Ali a 12-0 former Olympian (2008) prospect who had a slick style in the amateurs that has really looked impressive in his first 12 pro fights. Mix's slick boxing with good straight shots, He is facing John Revish (10-3-2) should be fun while it lasts.
Then on HBO this saturday we get a damn good free card. Before anyone says, Bernard Hopkins is boring, I suggest rewatching Hopkins vs Pascal 1. It was an entertaining fight that saw Hopkins hit the deck twice in the first 4 rounds before dominating the fight (The fight was ruled a draw). Pascal is the legit champion at Light Heavyweight (even if you think Hopkins won their last fight) and if Hopkins can beat Pascal he will break George Foremans record and become the oldest champion (legit) in boxing history (46). The two have talked a ton of shit in the build up to the fight and I expect Pascal to come out hard and fast. It will be up to Hopkins to weather the storm and put on another boxing lesson. If a 46 year old former Middleweight and Light Heavyweight Champion facing the 27 year old undisputed Light Heavyweight champion doesnt get you excited I dont know what will.
The undercard features the 2 other best Light Heavyweights in the division facing off. Former top 10 P4P'er Chad Dawson (lost unification to Pascal) is facing former belt holder Adrian Diaconu (lost belt to Pascal as well). The winner of this match up will take on the winner of Hopkins vs Pascal. I am interested to see how Dawson bounces back now that Emanuel Steward is in his corner. THe 4 best Light Heavyweights are in action this saturday.
Also, on Telefutura saturday night former Contender alum, Alfonso Gomez is facing undefeated prospect Calvin Green in a good step up fight for Green. Also, Roy Jones Jr is facing Denis Lebedev (an undefeated prospect) who should pound Roy Jones Jr into retirement....hopefully. I dont see any way Roy wins this fight and if he does I will be shocked. You guys should be able to check out Jones Jr vs Lebedev on a stream.
Hope you gys enjoy the good weekend of boxing and check out some or all of the fights!
