UFC Hall-of-Famer, Chuck Liddell Talks Shane Mosley and Retirement on 'Bar Fly'
Chuck Liddell, a UFC hall-of-famer, and one of the biggest stars in MMA history was on Bar Fly with Ed O'Neill and Mark Kreigel as they talked about his retirement, Randy Couture, and Shane Mosley's recent bout against Manny Pacquiao.
They have a good discussion on Mosley's decision to avoid engaging on the Pacquiao bout, but one of the more interesting bits of the video, was Chuck being very open when speaking on his decision to retire:
"I love fighting. I loved what I did. If I could still take a punch, I would still be out there fighting."
"I made other excuses for it in the past -- Maybe I wasn't training so hard. Maybe I was doing this wrong, but I did everything right for that fight [against Rich Franklin]. I was in great shape... I made a decision because of that... But it's a tough thing. It's the hardest thing in the world for me to accept. It's hard, because all I've ever done is train."

Having this conversation is not the first thing Chuck has ever done on a Barfly.

Ed O'Neill currently stars in Modern Family on ABC.
In one of the early episodes of the series there’s a scene where he RNCs his son and his technique was perfect!
I love it when I watch movies and TV shows and see proper technique being applied.
Did you guys know that Paul Walker also trains BJJ?
funny
and I’m setting myself up for ridicule here I know, but I watched FF 4, and when he fights with Vin Diesel the throws uses some jiu jitsu (I think a triangle attempt, although it’s been a while so I may be incorrect)
I consider myself a softcore fan.
Which makes me wonder. Which is Al’s biggest accomplishment; having a BB under a Gracie or scoring 4 touchdowns in one game?
If you can't wow them with brilliance, then baffle them with bullshit.
I think its getting to pretend to be married to Sofia Vegara

"What did you think about Randy getting knocked out?" --Annoying guy
“What do you mean ‘what do I think’?” —Chuck
Learn JiuJitsu, it's fun.
I liked that part
That annoying guy really had terrible input throughout that whole video

he didnt let anyone speak
he could have been better but he interrupted. he wanted people to hear his thoughts as opposed to moderating..
That guy was the fucking worst.

I'm seriously going to miss watching Chuck fight.
He’s always been my favorite fighter. I know people say he wasn’t the best and this and that but imo he’s the greatest LHW of all time. He fought his ass off and went for the finish every fight. I hope we get to see another fighter like him with the KO power and TDD that just wants to fight and put on a show for the fans.
" Its like when I'm right I'm right, when I'm wrong I coulda been right, so I'm still right cause I coulda been wrong, you know, and I'm sorry cause I could be wrong right now, I could be wrong, but I'm right..." Bama
Man, that’s sad to hear how much Chuck’s speech has slipped. He couldn’t get through a single sentence without slurring something terrible. Glad he’s hanging up the gloves for good finally.
I don't think his speech has slipped
The dude is just not a good talker. I spoke to him years ago at an event and he still sounded like a stumbler.
I am vorn the unspeakable the skulls of those who defy me bleach in the suns of hundreds of worlds...... and you are
Does anyone know
If his speech will come back at all since he’s not getting hit in the head anymore or is it done? (any doctors in the house) and has he always moved around like that or is it from fighting any interviews from years ago where he didn’t?
" Its like when I'm right I'm right, when I'm wrong I coulda been right, so I'm still right cause I coulda been wrong, you know, and I'm sorry cause I could be wrong right now, I could be wrong, but I'm right..." Bama
Brain damage
tends to be permanent. Though there may be some therapy (I don’t know if there is or isn’t) that would help him speak, those brain cells that were damaged or destroyed ain’t coming back.
Barring some medical breakthrough, that is.
I remember watching Chuck’s interview after knocking out Alistair in Pride, and the dude sounded much much clearer. Hopefully he hung ’em up in time to avoid anything too debilitating.
his speech doesn't sound that bad to me
his voice is kinda mumbly but it seems like it was always like that. his thoughts seem clear. people always reference his voice to how clear it sounded after the overeem fight but of coarse his voice is gonna sound clear after a fight with all the adrenaline and everything moving faster.

I disagree.
I remember older interviews with Chuck and he didn’t use to sound like this. Nowadays I honestly feel bad and guilty every time I hear him speak. It’ll probably never happen, but it kinda makes me think of stopping following mma. I just wish whatever is wrong with him is stabilized and doesn’t get worse.
I hate the guy from FOXSports
At 3:16 Chuck should have kicked his ass.

I don't like the way the guy in the middle talks about Chucks KO losses right to his face like that

Chuck really sounds punchy in this video, it was pretty shocking to me. Most of the brain damage fighters take is the accumulated result of training, not the fights themselves. As for the earlier question about his speech improving over time now that he is out of fighting, I would say that it is pretty unlikely. Generally, there is a small amount of improvement that can possibly occur, but in Chuck’s case, he has been fighting a LONG time. Sad to see. Glad that he retired.
Werdum beat Fedor, Dos Santos beat Werdum, Joaquim Ferreira beat Dos Santos. Therefore Ferreira is WAAAAY better than Fedor. Keep MMA math alive!
Chuck Liddell sounds absolutely fine! A few people here have seen a couple of his losses and are hearing him sound how they think he should sound. He made some great points here, but it’s kind of hard to get a good flow going when you know the dick head sat next to you is gonna cut across you half way through every sentence.
2 things....
1. chuck says “that’s the way i fought. i was always coming forward”. not true. chuck was well known for being a counter puncher. picture it: chuck in the ring, arms spread wide and low, daring you to come in on him so he can put you out of your misery.
2. as far as his speech sounding slurred, they are in a bar, and, well, it’s chuck.
Goddammnit Hold up!
Why was this mutherfuck comparing Shane Mosley with MMA fighters??.
Shane Mosley has taken about a bagillion more punch’s to the head (approximately, lol) then most MMA fighters!. You damn right he’s slowed up!, just LISTEN to he’s speech during those 24/7. BRAIN TRAUMA HELLO!
I don’t think that fucker has any clue about combat sports and there differences.

I would be happy to hear Chuck’s or Ed’s thoughts on MMA for as long as they care to talk. Chuck is a legend, and Ed clearly has contacts and insight to share. That third guy ruined this clip for me.

Chuck seems more lucid here
Maybe his slurred speech is down to alcohol rather as opposed to just cumulative brain damage.
