i posted this in another thread
but it’s worth repeating here:
sonnen has NEVER finished a fight in the UFC or WEC, so i’m not sure what right he has to criticize georges for failing to knock out someone who hasn’t been knocked out in 11 years.
also – i’m stoked for the inevitable korean zombie/mark hominick fight.

Yah Sonnen is one to really talk
And the way it is looking right now, he won’t be fighting anywhere soon. He starting to look really sad now. Each day he is becoming less and less relevant.
Sheeeeeeeee-it
he’s got plenty of room to talk. sonnen is extremely aggressive in his fights, and he was simply saying that GSP doesn’t bring that same kind of aggression.
another keyboard warrior or do you simply lack reading comprehension skills?
aggression
can only go so far when you’ve never, ever finished a fight. Sonnen is criticizing someone for going to desicion consistently, maybe he should actually start finishing.
I was agreeing with the above post
Maybe I should have expanded on my post. But i figured since i was commenting on someone elses thread which is about Sonnen not KOing anyone in the UFC/WEC, that someone with your obvious reading comprehension skills would have clued in on that.
Anyways, here is what I think.
Sonnen is aggressive but cannot finish a fight.
Therefore, he has is not one really to talk about it. GSP brings aggression in a different way. Its completely unfair to criticize him when you cannot finish a fight yourself.
Sonnen is just trying to keep himself relevant, the MMA fanbase has a fleeting mind, and if he’s suspended long enough, people are not going to care anymore about him.
So yeah… i guess i lack reading comprehension. Way to try to insult someone bud. How about ask me what i ment because, i admit i was a little vague with the title of my comment.
Keep fighting Keyboard Warrior

Think it’s a lil early for Jung to get a match with a former #1 contender? I’d love to see it anyway but something tells me Hominick would get it despite Jung stating that he’s not gonna go balls out anymore.
They made a video game about Yakuzas. It’s called Yakuza. And it’s about Yakuza
gocyborg.com
depends what you mean
other than baloney, now-avenged loss to garcia (no big deal) and the headkick loss to roop (which is a big deal) jung has a very good record overall. hominick is coming off a loss.
so it’s not totally logical, but it’s too awesome not to happen.
Don't forget that uncle Dana loves him
I see him fighting Hominick and if he wins, title shot.
Let the fighters fight, let the referees ref, but dear God, don't let the judges judge.
MMA math. Roop murdered Zombie, Hominick murdered Roop. Therefor we already know that Hominick would ultramurderkill Zombie, so there’s no point in making it.

Well, Hominick (barely) beat Garcia on points while Zombie twisted Garcia like a pretzel and made him tap.

Kanehara decision was BS too
Been a while since I’ve seen that one, but I remember thinking that. Kanehara was like a Japanese Leonard Garcia for a while there.
i'm not sure what you read, but...
i re-read the sonnen tweet and i couldn’t find the part where he criticized GSP for not knocking people out. it read to me as if he was criticizing GSPs perceived “less aggressive” fighting style. but by all means, feel free to put words in his mouth so you can proceed to criticize something that he didn’t say. maybe you’ve never watched a chael sonnen fight, but he brings the aggression. every time.
He talked about fighting, not aggression
GSP DOES in fact fight. If you haven’t noticed punches and kicks and takedowns ARE utilized, and quite masterfully I might add.
Let the fighters fight, let the referees ref, but dear God, don't let the judges judge.
i think its less the failing to knock some one out
than the lack of even trying. chael pushes the fight at all times. GSP is content to just, well, get by.

Yeah, really
I thought it was totally hilarious and I find Chael’s constant attacks on everyone endlessly amusing, so I’m not really complaining, but if you actually want to get into a textual examination of his joke (which I don’t really, but whatever) it’s hypocritical.
GSP consistently hurts the guys he fights more than Chael does, so by any definition, he’s as much in “fights” as Chael ever is. Strip away the bluster and Chael is just a modified LNP artist with a good work-rate for his ineffective strikes.
Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

add to the fact
that the only time Chael has seen a fight finished, he’s tapping to a submission.
Chael is talking about f8cking fighting not just fighting. I’ll give Chael some real props. His comments about Vitor Belfort’s performance against A. Silva. He said, if you want to stand in front of ANderson and stand in awe of his skills, yeah watch him kick you in the face. Chael’s approach was to simply go in there and actually “fight” Anderson Silva, which he did.
Yes, GSP fight but I really agree with Chael . . . he’s not fcuking fighting. Here’s a perfect example GSP vs Dan Hardy compared to Carlos Condit vs Dan Hardy. Hey, I’ll go as far to argue that I don’t think Anthony Johnson really fcuking fights, he’s too busy thinking about what his opponent is going to do and what he should do. I’m reading his body language during his fight against Dan Hardy.
I don’t know if I’m reading too much into this, but I think he’s on point. GSP reminds me Floyd Mayweather Jr. They both let fans know without any subtlely, that they go in their to win. After a Fight of the Year (maybe Decade) Corrales vs. Castillo, Mayweather Jr. simply said this. “That’s what the fans want? It doesn’t make sense, you’ll never see me in the ring doing that. I fight smart.” That’s pretty much watch GSP does, he fights safe, he fights smart but . . . he’s not “fcuking” fighting.

Is there a definition for "fcuking fighting"?
And are you agreeing with Sonnen? That a rugby or hockey fight is more of a fight than a GSP fight?
Sonnen’s comment was funny, by the way.
by Pantherhare on May 11, 2011 12:35 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t know if I can cleary outline what fcuking fighting is, I should stop drinking during my lunch break but, when you see the following:
- Jon Jones slam Matt Hamill and unleash elbows that would make Kenny Florian blush, he’s fighting.
- When you see Bisping come back after being dropped by Dennis Kang and finish in a brutal fashion, he’s fcukin fighting.
- Sure, Chuck Liddell knew how to mix it up, despite what some fans and the media said . . . he just wanted to fcukin fight and excite the crowds. I can understand why Rampage recently said he would much rather watch Liddell as opposed to Rashad Evans or Mo Lawal.
- I love Machida. But ask his father, he doesn’t fcukin fight. Yoshizo would much rather watch Anderson Silva.
That’s fcukin fighting . . the stuff that makes Joe Silva jump up from his chair and go wild like he has not already seen 20+ fights the previous week.

Uhmmm . . . no. (Anything that has a remote chance of breaking out into a fight.)
Chael is not talking about FINISHING FIGHTS.
He’s clearly talking about “fighting” and what he considers a fight.
Wow. Yes I am defending Sonnen. It’s funny.
And really, if you compare Sonnen’s last two fight to GSP’s last two fights . . . which ones would you rather watch? I know it takes two to tango but not for nothing:
- Marquardt’s knee to the head + Sonnen’s desperate to win, relentless control and ground and pound was more exciting that GSP’s picture perfect lightning fast jabs against Koscheck.
- Silva vs Sonnen was definitely a Fight of the Year candidate. GSP vs Shields . . . not so much, not at all.
- Sonnen’s tweets > GSP’s tweets. Well GSP doesn’t have a spanish ghost-writer to help him.

I laugh whenever I read Chael's tweets, quotes, whatever.
I laugh even harder when I read the angry responses to his quotes by the readers on Bloody Elbow. It’s hysterical, and this is how the man (who has failed at so many things in his life) continues to create interest and sell PPVs. Well, he’s also a pretty good fighter.
by Gideon Jay on May 11, 2011 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions 4 recs
why do you say
“it takes two to tango” and then immediately move to say sonnen’s fights are more exciting?
silva v. sonnen was fight of the year because of silva choking him out, not because of sonnen sitting in his guard for 4.5 rounds.
I gotta call myself out for my BS . . .
Sonnen’s last two fights > GSP’s last two fights. (I did thinK the Kos was good until I realized that I was watching the sames round 5×.)

sonnen's past two fights
were definitely better than gsp’s last two fights.
and even though i’m an excuse-making gsp-nuthugger, i can admit there’s been something a little off about geroges recently.
but as you say, it takes two to tango. if jake shields had fought gsp with the same tenacity that sonnen had fought silva, we could have been treated to fight of the year.
i almost wonder whether you “need” to be challenged to put on a good show. sometimes when i’m at work and i have less to do i get lazier. maybe if people don’t fight you harder it throws you off. maybe i should have gone easier on silva for his weird performances against cote, leites and maia.
hopefully we see a good GSP fight again soon, either because his “bad luck” ends, he gets his shit together, or someone finally mans up and takes the fight right to him.
he does seem a little off. In the Hardy fight he was working just subs and no GnP, on the Kos fight he worked an unholy amount of jabs and in the Shields fight he was really working that overhand right and to a lesser extent the spinning back kick.
I think GSP is practicing new techniques in the cage for when he fights someone that is a challenge
The live tweets from the UFC summit from Jason High, Yves Edwards and Mike Pierce were excellent.

Like I said in another post, note the water bottles
They made a video game about Yakuzas. It’s called Yakuza. And it’s about Yakuza
gocyborg.com
Gomi has two water bottles and what appears to be an unopened Rockstar energy drink next to Mizugaki’s coffee.
One of the water bottles is the exact same one that Mizugaki has. It may be that those are the standard water bottles already at the table for each fighter’s spot, or that they grabbed them from the same spot before entering the room.
Given the amount of fighters with water bottles and food evident in that picture alone, I’m thinking that two water bottles isn’t anything indicative of a drinking session. American tax laws don’t really apply to Gomi, so he has no real reason to pay attention or fight the jet lag.
It’s all fun and games to joke about Gomi having a few too much, but to use water bottles as evidence of him actually doing so is unwise and flat out dumb.
In other news, I have spent way too much time looking at a photo of one obviously passed out fighter and two others (Omigawa and Fukuda?) who are also asleep. Adios for the day.

I’m not saying this is unique to MMA, but it sure seems more prevalent in this sport. I mean, could you imagine Jack Lambert calling up some candy-ass running back from Dallas or wideout from Cleveland the next week to see if they were recovering from the concussion he gleefully administered to them? Hell no. Wait a sec. That’s what I liked about Lambert. Disregard.

MMA tends to breed respect in a way most other sports don’t. I think it was Don Frye who said you’d have to be crazy to hate your opponent after a 15-minute war. Or maybe it was Severn… I dunno, someone with a moustache and a gravelly voice.
I think MMA is more upfront about it. In major sports some fans do not want to hear that a guy is friends with someone from the rival team, but most of the athletes in any given sport have friends on their rival. I think a lot of lets say football players do call each other when one gets hurt, it just is not news.
When Ray Lewis decimates someone, he's usually the first one to start a prayer circle.

Hominick's boxing is better, but he doesn't really mix it up
Jung was a pretty successful kickboxer, even scoring a KO over Pajonsuk a couple of months before coming to the WEC (it was ruled a DQ because It’s Showtime doesn’t allow spinning backfists). He tends to get hit a lot, but he’s really tough (the Roop kick was pretty hellacious, probably would’ve knocked out damn near anyone in the division) and Hominick doesn’t have elite power. Closer fight than you might think.
