Good news to some, bad news to others - Gus Johnson is likely staying in the MMA game. MMAFighting is reporting that Johnson has signed a deal with Fox Sports, but his Showtime combat sports deal was completely separate from his CBS deal:

"Last week it was revealed that Gus Johnson's contract with CBS had expired, and on Tuesday morning it was reported that Johnson has accepted a job at Fox. But that doesn't mean he's done as the voice of mixed martial arts on Showtime, the sister network of CBS.

Sources told MMAFighting.com that Johnson's contract with CBS was for basketball and football, and that his deal to call fights (both MMA and boxing) for Showtime was a separate contract. That contract is still in effect, and Johnson will call Saturday night's Andre Ward-Arthur Abraham boxing match for Showtime. Although Showtime hasn't yet announced who will broadcast its next MMA show (a June 18 Strikeforce card), Johnson is expected to call that event as well."

So why did you think it was “unlikely” he would continue working for Showtime Sports when it was pretty clear that the gig is separate from his former duties on CBS? Just wishful thinking?

What gave anyone any indication that the deal was separate? No one reported that until today.

CBS Sports and Showtime Sports are different shops with their own original programming for different sports. And Gus was employed for CBS for years before he ever signed with Showtime. But getting back to my question… why’d you think it was unlikely he would continue with his Showtime duties?

He crossed back and forth doing MMA. What made me think it was unlikely was other people reporting that they believed it was unlikely. My bad. I was wrong.

It’s cool, I’m not trying to make you feel guilty about a small mistake or anything. I was genuinely curious where this idea started is all.

Looks like Michael David Smith is the culprit, who also made the ridiculous claim that “Petruzelli-Kimbo was just one mediocre fighter beating another, and a broadcaster with more experience in MMA would have known that.”

I’m pretty sure if Mike Goldberg or any other experienced MMA commentator was calling that fight, they would have done their best to sell the moment and flip the fuck out as well.

I came in to ask this as well. I mean seriously, who in their right mind would consider this good news?

Discrepency.

It’s funny most consider him a decent to pretty good (if excitable) basketball/football announcer. However consensus is that he is a terrible MMA announcer. What do you guys think the difference is. Lack of knowledge about MMA?
