That poll was Showtime garbage
If Gilbert wants to unify some belts, let him start with Pettis in the Octagon.

That's if he loses
I wouldn’t mind him fighting Guida either though.
Melendez already beat guida for strikeforce title iirc. Was a long time ago but Gil is better now and Guida is roughly the same fighter.

Showtime garbage, not Strikeforce garbage. Totally different.

I think Melendez has a great shot at knocking off the top UFC LWs.
I also think Diaz would get steamrolled by the UFC WWs,

It makes no sense to anyone.

He just smashed the guy who beat Martin Kampman and Hazlett and took Kos 3 rounds.

He beat the guy that smashed Kampann and Hazlet and did nothing to KOs.

So somehow I'm supposed to think that Nick isn't able to catch Kos cuz Daley couldn't?

If Coker really believes the idea he layed out on MMA live he is crazy
He proposed having Strikeforce champs fight 3 times a year, twice in SF and once against the UFC champ every year.
Why would Dana let his belts possibly be worthless for a year? If they want united titles they will tear down SF once the Showtime contracts are over, and I fully believe they will. Deep down I think Coker knows that too.

Yup
That being said, that doesn’t mean there is no place for Coker in the ufc. He can hold any number of important jobs as Dana doesn’t seem to hate him.

So, obviously Showtime (and Gus Johnson in particular) were selling the merger pretty hard tonight. They ran a poll about UFC-Strikeforce fights, Gus Johnson explicitly tried to get Nick Diaz to say something about fighting UFC fighters (by mentioning the GSP-Shields fight), and so on. I have a very hard time believing that, given what we saw tonight, they’re actually going to wait 10-14 months to collapse the rosters. So what gives?
Is it possible that Zuffa is renegotiating a contract with Showtime right now which would allow them to unify the rosters much sooner? For instance, perhaps Showtime would be willing to kill the current contract and allow the roster unification, if they were given, say, 6-8 CBS/Showtime shows a year. Any chance of something like this happening?
I can't see Dana giving Showtime 6 fights a year while having Versus and Spike shows

i can see it happening
the UFC is renegotiating with spike pretty damn soon and they’re a massive ratings pull for spike
they’ll be able to pull it off

That was an awesome show. One thing you can always count on in Strikeforce is finishes. Damn good show.

I support this for..
Number 2 contender? Behind Pettis/Guida.

This fight won’t happen but if it did and the winner still had to wait behind a fight featuring a guy with 0 fights in the major leagues and a guy who was 5-5 before a three fight streak against also rans and a spent legend that would be one of the biggest title shot travesties in UFC history.

The WEC isn’t big leagues? Okay, thank you for your insight. I would’ve been pretty stoked to fight in the WEC personally.

From an opportunity standpoint it was certainly a big deal. Fighting on free national TV is nothing to sneeze at. From a competitive standpoint, yes, it was not a major organization for the LW division. They had two fighters ranked in the top-25 when they folded, and given that the only fighters said top-25 guys had faced that were also ranked was each other, there’s no way to know where they actually fit, thus the need to have the guys coming from the WEC fight in the UFC and establish their own individual spot.
Frankie Edgar came to the UFC as Reality Fighting Champion. To win the belt he had beaten future WEC fighter Deividas Taurosevicius then defended against Jim Miller. In the year prior to his title win Kurt Pellegrino was also a RF lightweight. Did that mean Frankie should have been given his shot right away? No. Did the fact he came from a minor league show mean he and the other guys must not be UFC caliber? No. It meant they each had to show where they stood by fighting guys who had established their ranking on the ladder. Miller and Edgar proved on course to be top guys, Kurt a middle of the pack guy, and DT unable to quite hack it at the top.

I couldn't disagree more.
Melendez has dominated 2 top 10 LWs in his last 2 fights. One for 25 minutes and the other in 1 round. Guida, Pettis and Miller haven’t even gotten close to that. There’s no way Melendez is behind any of those guys. And no Bendo is not a top 10 LW. How can you crack the top ten w/o defeating a top 10 LW?

It isn't about what's fair, it's about what the UFC hype machine could pump out.
And the Pettis/Guida winner is easily the best thing (WEC champ and great guy vs a beloved charismatic exciting fighter). Melendez and Miller aren’t as well known quantities by the casual fan, and quite frankly Melendez probably has the third best resume of the four, behind Guida and Miller.

Guida’s resume is awful by title contender standards. He is on a three fight winning streak. The fighters he beat are a cut fighter, a fighter barely holding a job, and a legend well off his prime. Prior to that he was 5-5 with losses every time he tried to step it up to even the upper-middle level of the division. If he wins against Pettis he adds a bout against a guy that is completely unestablished in the division meaning we have no way of assigning any value to it until Pettis fights again.
Saying his is better than Gil’s is pretty laughable. Hell, I am the most biased pro-Miller person on here and even I would say, on rankings, Gil is clearly the one with the best resume. That being said, I still think the shot deserves to be, albeit won’t be, Miller’s, based on his overall record and the fact that he is sitting on just one decision loss to the #2 guy and yet with his next win would tie BJ Penn for the most wins ever in the UFC’s LW division. That deserves rewarding.

Who has Melendez beaten lately again?
-Aoki, who has proven he can’t beat anyone who’s ever wrestled.
-Thompson… Yeah, I won’t even start.
-Kawajiri, who’s so far past his prime he can’t even see it in his rear view mirror.
Yeah, heck of a resume.

Its funny. Melendez beat numerous top 10-15 level fighters over the last couple of years and will be a consensus top 3 lightweight after this fight to anyone that matters. In spite of that, if he got the fight against the winner of Maynard/Edgar 3 instead of Pettis or Guida, people would have a conniption. Doesn’t even matter how much logic you could throw at it, they just would.
Well if logic and results were used Pettis/Guida would be a fight to decide who even gets to be considered in the title picture, not who is at the front of it. People will just parrot “but they promised him an undeserved title shot so now it would be wrong to give it to somebody that actually deserves it.”

who are the morons that voted against this?
I mean really who says no to this

Well, in fairness, even the people that voted yes need to take some time to realize they voted in a text in MMA broadcast poll and re-examine what they’re doing with their lives.

Save the "Ultimate Fighter".
UFC vs. StrikeForce show. Overeem Vs. Cain as coaches. Fighters on the verge of being cut fight for a chance to stay.
Good, bad... I'm the guy with the gun.
How does this save ultimate fighter?
Two relatively small draws coaching people who are probably on long losing streaks. I’m not sure I see the appeal.
NO!!!!!!!!!!!
the minute that they unify the titles is the moment that strikeforce ceases to exist. 96% of those who responded to the poll are against more MMA. think of it this way: if they unified the titles one month ago, then there would have been no fights last night and i would have had to watch fuckin’ baseball! i say move the top tier strikeforce guys to the UFC and move the bottom tier UFC guys to strikeforce and let both orgs. continue to exist.
Give Edson Barboza to Melendez...
… and he will never talk to unify titles anymore.
