Bloody Elbow has become my new LOVE! LOL
Seriously you all @ BloodyElbow really sparked a fire in me... which had me really excited and pumped to go out there and put on a show!
I want to seriously Thank You all so much for the support I have been getting. I literally used all that positive energy as fuel when I was fighting on Saturday. I know I still have a lot to prove, including how well my Wrestling, Takedown Defense, and Subs and Sweeps off my back. But just know that I am fully aware of this, and will continue to just train that much harder. I have my goals set and know exactly what I want to add and refine to my game. My plan is to make any wrestler that tries to take me down, work his ass off doing my best to make it difficult and painful. If they succeed I plan to make them wish they didn't by trying to stay very active and aggressive off my back, whether it be punches, elbows, up kicks, submissions, or sweeps. The ultimate plan is to become the Ultimate Riddler... lol
Try to make everyone guessing... how do we solve the riddle that is "Ben Saunders". The Blue Print has been laid out, but I plan to train harder then ever to do my best to make sure that Blue Print becomes obsolete!
Thank you all again for the support and I hope you guys enjoyed the show. I don't think I have ever fought someone as tough or with as much heart Mr. Matt Sung Lee! He is the Ultimate Warrior and deserves nothing but complete respect. Matt is was an honor to do battle with you sir. Like I told you after the fight, if you ever want me to stop by your gym or give a free seminar, it would be my honor. =)

OK everyone I am currently in the works of creating some really nice high quality Autograph-able flyers to take to the UFC Fan Expo in Canada. This way I got something nice to sign and give out to all my fans.
The front side of the flyer will be a photo of me to autograph and sign for everyone and the back I am using for sponsors and advertisements. I am not a greedy person, just trying to make enough to pay for my travel expenses. Anyone interested in Sponsoring my trip or wanting to advertise at the biggest Mixed Martial Arts Fan Expo in History, hit me up ASAP! This is going to be GREAT exposure for anyone!

Oh, huge opportunity
to quote one of my favorite MMA moments:
Ryo Chonan on Twitter after finding out Hornbuckle was sick and couldn’t fight him -
“Fuck! Chenge oppornent. Honebackle is influenza! Fuck!”
On a more serious note, that’s some solid WW talent if you two are training together. Tell Hornbuckle to keep coming back. He’s only going to get better, like you are trying to do too.

I was actually gonna fight Ryo Chonen.
I’m pretty sure it was like 4-5 days notice before the fight, I got asked to fight Ryo in Japan. I told them I am not that heavy (probably 193lbs.), I wasn’t in bad shape and was willing to take the fight short notice, but requested a catch weight of 175lbs. since I had less than a week to cut 23 pounds to make weight. I was just asking if that was possible, I even contemplated cutting to 170lbs. just for the opportunity to fight in Japan. But they ended up choosing Hornbuckle and then he had to pull out. But he was really short notice. So maybe he got sick trying to cut his weight. Who knows. Sucks… but this is part of the game. I still think doing 155, 165, 175, 185, 195, 205 weight classes would do big things for this sport. =)

Hahaha
Trust me I feel you bro. I don’t think people really understand that MMA Fighter pay rolls aint something to brag about. Sucks cause I used to be able to focus on just the fight game, and the love and passion for what i do. But once u quite everything and all you do is train and fight and thats your only income. You gotta look into the best options to fund this lifestyle. Fighting alone ain’t cuttin it. Opening an academy is something I want to focus on later in my career. So self promotion and self marketing seems to be my best option. I pretty much am now in the Ben Saunders business as opposed to just the fight business. Maybe try to get some appearance gigs, or maybe do some seminars… this has been a high priority over the past year. Find ways to make income and still be able to primarily focus most of my time into improving my skills and my weaknesses. The evolution of this sport is Cruel! There are 18 year olds with the skills of us veterans. We gotta evolve fast enough to not just be on top, but to climb to the top and then reign is sopmething so rare… I gotta do it. This is my journey… my mount Everest if you will.. I’m gonna make it… as long as I give it everything I got! =)

Most fans don’t get how hard you guys work and how little money you take home. Fighters that do speak up get batted down for “crying” or “bitching” when you’re the real value of MMA. Thanks for the sacrifices you’ve made for our entertainment, Ben. I assure you, we have all been entertained.

It’s rare to see that kind of domination in the MT clinch at this level in MMA. It truly is a thing of vicious beauty. Finding yourself in the thai clinch with a guy who knows what he’s doing, and can keep control, is scary business.

I try to bring the beauty of brutality into every fight. I believe my mind became sadistic while drooling over team Chute Box fighting over in Pride!(If I could only kick and knee a downed opponent, life would be so much more incredible! lol) Those were the guys I loved and is the mindset I attempt to bring into every fight… Violent, Aggressive, and a bit of Humor… While lookin at my opponent across the cage I think funny things to myself like…. “Damn… It sucks to be you…” and “Cause if don’t know… now you know…” random various things that basically emphasize what I am about to set out and do… Some can refer to it as “Getting your mind right” every fighter has there own ways of doing so… My zone is Sadistic Humor by thoughts of brutality and the knowledge of knowing what kind of damage I’m capable of doing. While thinking about how I am about to do it. Then I do my best to accomplish it… like letting a pitbull off it’s leash. BJ Penn mentality… Just Scrap! =) HAHAHA

Man, what were you thinking after the second round…
The bell rang for Round 3 and they were still in there discussing over letting it go or not, and patching him up. Took what seemed to be an additional 1 to 2 minutes after the bell. Thought for sure it was being called off. That’s why I didn’t tap gloves the 3rd round. I knew this being the last round it was time to really goto work and finish him. But damn he had no quite in him, and that was awesome to witness. Seeing this guy not back down once, no matter what I was hitting him with turn me into Matt Sung Lee’s biggest fan! by Ben Saunders on Apr 11, 2011 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions
Then why didn't the doc stop it???
I get that he didn’t wanna quit, but what’s the point in the doctor letting him cover it up in vaseline just to wait for it to bust open and call it? From what you’re saying and what we saw the doc knew it should have been stopped and just didn’t…?
Conducting an experiment on knocking people out in particular ways would be unethical.
I think the doctor saw something...
Whether it was Lee’s heart, his corners passion and aggression saying he’s fine, or the crowd clapping and chanting. The doctor made the call and gave him a shot to try and make something happen. I hope I get that doctor if I am getting beat up. Let me go out on my shield! =)
by Ben Saunders on Apr 12, 2011 1:24 AM EDT up reply actions
That shows the incredible heart of a fighter we as fans all love
But on the other hand, as a fan, this sort of thing concerns me when you’ve got a guy like Koscheck come out 3 months after his fight saying he still can’t feel his face ( I don’t think anyone hates Kos enough to enjoy that lol). We all love the true battles of MMA and the wars of attrition, and watching you guys do things most of us can only dream of. But I don’t think anyone would take joy in seeing a man permanently injured because he has too much heart.
I could prolly do a whole fanpost on this one just thinking about it here, but the simple point is that part of the docs job is to protect you guys from yourself. And as much as a doctor stoppage might suck, its better than permanent damage.
Conducting an experiment on knocking people out in particular ways would be unethical.

Ben if you fight Askren, do you think he will try to play it safe and lay on you the whole time to avoid any kind of damage, or entertainment for that matter? Askren is the most boring fighter in the world to me, regardless of his beautiful wrestling. And I like wrestling. I don’t know why I just feel he uses his wrestling to stall out heavily and wear time down. It works great but is boring as hell to watch. i want you to knee him into the stratosphere.

Yes...
If we fought he would utilize his strengths and take the fight where he has the best chance of winning. That is a winning tactic or game plan. He wouldn’t deny it either. He might try to hype up his gameplan by saying he would TKO me or beat me down with some vicious ground and pound, might even say a submission. But it’s his style and he is phenominal at it and at winning. Hat goes off to Askren for still being undefeated. That’s not an easy record to hold in the MMA game. He is very talented and who knows what he looks like in a year or 2 on his feet.

Ben - Question
Understand that your martial path started with JKD. That must mean you’ve done some wing chun in the past. Have you ever trained sticky hands?
If so – do you think that you be able to apply some of those techniques to the ground n pound or guard game. I’m thinking that thus far few people have technical GNP. If you were able to use the theory of the centerline from top position in guard i have this vision of some brutal GNP. Similarly the defense could be useful for the guy on bottom who is facing bombs from above.
I’m an armchair theorist and not a fighter. Have done some Wing Chun and some BJJ (as well as MT and Karate) in the past but never stepped in to a cage and don’t think I ever will – but i’ve always thought it would be possible.
As a pro fighter do you have any thoughts?
PS – have emailed you about t-shirts for international shipping.
by rainmaker6 on Apr 9, 2011 3:54 AM EDT reply actions 1 recs
Wing Chun does work!
You can def translate Wing Chun into and other style… Like I stressed a while ago. Every style and technique works. It’s your knowledge of other styles, techniques, and tactics are what may make or break your style. If your aware and can adapt to any style then u can use any style against it. Best realization for understanding his claim of using no style as your style… and using no way as the way. Adapting like water was a concept way ahead of it’s time. Be water my friend! =)

Rather see Killa B against another striker and/or a wrestler who isn’t quite as good as Askren and laying and praying
Well...
One thing I will say is as good as Ben Askren might be as a wrestler… He isn’t a blackbelt in BJJ like Fitch and Hallman. So the chances of me submitting Askren are much greater IMO… =)

I think there should be a rule change so that when both fighters are grounded, kicks to the head are legal. Upkicks would then be legal, as would kicking the head of a fighter going for a leglock.
IMO, leglocks are unrealistic in MMA right now, since you can’t kick the face.

But, ANY banned move makes the fight somewhat "unrealistic".
I mean, surely if you hit a guy hard enough to get him to drop to a knee, you should be able to legitimately finish him with a kick or knee to the head. But in the interests of “palatability”, the truth is that UFC is not a realistic fight. It’s an entertaining combat sport which happens to have less limitations than other combat sports, like boxing etc. Then you have eye pokes/gouges, groin strikes, punches to the back of the head, etc, all of which you would see in “realistic”/real fights. And, of course, breaks between rounds… how many times do we see someone saved by the bell?
True,
but most banned moves are banned because they are extremely harmful, to the point of it being seriously dangerous to allow them.
A grounded fighter should be able to kick the head, as you can’t really generate enough power for it to be as dangerous as a standing stomp, knees to the head on the ground, standing soccer kick, etc.

I'd argue that Anderson kick had much less force then the Vitor face licker kick.
Ban it!
Learn JiuJitsu, it's fun.
Nick Diaz just beat Paul Daley at his own (and only) game.
The difference being
that from a standing position, you can move around easily, and dodge strikes. On the ground you are much less mobile.

Add pistols and flamethrowers
and we got a real scrap.
Learn JiuJitsu, it's fun.

not all grounded kicks though...
I remember this one fight where both were on the ground with one attempting a leglock. the guy “defended” with landing his heel several times on the guy’s head while it was planted on the mat.
That’s not safe compared to upkicks.
by Anton Tabuena on Apr 11, 2011 12:06 AM EDT up reply actions
I would prefer all grounded kicks to be allowed,
but would settle for upkicks.
And the anecdotal evidence you provided just shows how really- it’s leglocks that are dangerous to attempt. If it’s literally THAT EASY to get whacked in the face with heel strikes going for a leglock, then maybe that just shows a glaring weakness of leglocks.

And I would still imagine that this heel to head defensive kick...
is less damaging than a classic Crocop head kick or the one Gonzaga landed on him… Of course, no one wants to ban head kicks, even though they can be devastating… it would take away one of the most spectacular moves in the game.
And I don't know the answer to this but...
Through all the days of Pride, how many people were killed/neck broken/brain damaged by knees or kicks to the head while on the ground? Versus the the same statistics for standing knees and kicks to the head? The answer tells you, when you allow both types of moves, which one winds up actually causing more serious injury. And by what differential. If it isn’t much, I’m in favor of allowing kicks to “grounded” opponents. (Especially those that play the “one finger down” game!!!)
Well,
I used to be very gung ho about allowing kicks/ stomps/ knees to the head of grounded opponents, and to be honest- I still pretty much am.
However, the image of Kitaoka puking his guts out after getting drilled to the head by Hirota knees… it’s burned in my brain. I think limiting some strikes ends up being better for the fighter’s overall health.

Would that be the Dave Herman bout in Sengoku you are thinking of?
Forget the opponent, but I think it was Jim York? Too lazy to look it up, but I think that’s it. Brock Larson tried the same thing in the UFC and got docked points for it.

I’m sort of poor myself so no shirt for me at this point in time, but it’s definitely a killer design! It was a fun fight, the only thing is you laid such a beating on that guy, but he just wouldn’t go down, so it almost became a little hard to watch as it progressed. That’s obviously not your fault as such, you did everything to finish the fight and it was a very good performance, but man that was one resilient son of a bitch, just it looked like had nothing for you except that toughness. Congrats on the win and getting some television exposure again, hope to see you soon! Preferably in the UFC ;) and here on BE of course!

That was the most entertaining fight on the card
in my opinion. It was the only one that had me on the edge of my seat, and cringing every time another knee or elbow landed. I knew about you before, Ben, but this fight solidified my fandom. Keep on rockin those knees, my man. Beautiful.
Congrats on the victory, Ben.
But honestly speaking here, and I don’t mean to rain on anyone’s parade, but I don’t want to see an Askren/Saunders fight. I just don’t see how Saunders can win that fight, especially with Askren becoming a full time fighter and working with Duke Roufus.
by Tech Fall 171 on Apr 10, 2011 11:11 AM EDT reply actions 1 recs
Is that true?
Is he training with Duke Roufus?
If that’s true than he is in great hands over there. That is gonna up Askrens game big time! Also would be the perfect camp to utillize if he was preparing to fight me. That ups his playing field no doubt. But I have been also working on being very aggressive and crafty from my guard. Askren would have to worry while playing in it, but he would be a very tough test that I am actually really excited about. I wanna see if my improvements are where they should be. Against a wrestler like Askren that would be the ultimate test! =)

Yep, just announced that he's moving camps
Hopefully when you fight him he’ll get cocky about his standup and you can light him up in the clinch.

That’s a quality big name fight for you Ben. Where are you looking to go with your career as of now if you don’t mind me asking. Are you looking to get into a Bellator Tournament and perhaps try to win the right to fight Askren? Or are you planning on going to StrikeForce and taking on one of their guys? Or a potential SuperFight with Askren would be good as well…

Right now...
I’m looking at one more showcase fight with Bellator and then The Welterweight Tournament they have going on in the Fall… I figure picking up potentially 5 wins before the end of the year on a televised card is a Great year! =)

Are you making long terms plans with Bellator right now?
Or are you aiming to make it back to ufc in the somewhat near future? I only ask because I was under the impression that Bellator’s champions clause was pretty tight.

Not sure... playing it as I go.
At the end of the day it comes down to money, for me and well my eventual family. We have only a short time to make enough to retire on. Currently I am under a year contract and have 2 showcase fights and the tournament possibly in the Fall. so 5 fights potentially on my roster for this year. I will see how this year goes and then take it from there. Bellator have been awesome to work with, complete professional, and treating me very well. So I guess we’ll just see what happens… =)

Trust me I was contemplating it the whole time...
I was told that because my nose was broken I couldn’t get cleared to fight by the commission so I wasn’t allowed to fight. But I was just waiting for Dana to call me in and ask me… thought if that happened maybe he could pull some strings and make it happen. Unfortunately the opportunity never came. I contemplated walk into the back and walking into there room and asking him personally. Trust me… I feel I don’t have any regrets in life because everything has made me who I am today. I like who I am so it was all worth it. But if I had to regret something… it would be not making them put me back in even with a broken nose. I was getting used to breathing out of my mouth anyways… lol =)

I agree Hornbuckle has so much talent that the matchup would be exciting for all the fans for sure.
