Carlos Condit vs. Dong Hyun Kim Set for UFC 132 in Las Vegas
The UFC announced a pivotal welterweight bout today via Twitter, slated for the UFC 132 card in Las Vegas on Independence Day weekend:
New bout for ufc 132 - @carloscondit vs @stungunkim
Former WEC welterweight king, Carlos Condit (26-5, 3-1 UFC) is coming off an outstanding performance at UFC 120 last fall, where he KOd British bad boy, Dan Hardy in the first round. Many argue that despite an impressive record, Condit hasn't fought the stiffest competition available, but he'll certainly have his hands full in July.
Korean standout, Dong Hyun Kim (16-0 1 NC, 5-0, 1 NC UFC) remains undefeated in the Octagon after recently thwarting the submission attack of Nate Diaz with a smothering top control game at UFC 125 on New Years Day.
The winner of this bout should certainly be in line for title contention, perhaps facing perennial contender Jon Fitch in a title eliminator, depending on the result of the welterweight title fight in Toronto later this month.
The current UFC 132 card:
-Dominick Cruz vs. Urijah Faber
-Carlos Condit vs. Dong Hyun Kim
-Wanderlei Silva vs. Chris Leben
-Tito Ortiz vs. Ryan Bader
-Matt Wiman vs. Dennis Siver
-Erik Koch vs. Cub Swanson
-Melvin Guillard vs. Shane Roller
-Evan Dunham vs. George Sotiropoulos

I like this more than the Penn fight
If only because I think Condit will win. Condit by late TKO.

Agreed. 3rd round TKO after Stun Gun gasses halfway through the second. Condit is going to have his way in the third.
Stun Gun has consistently shown a bad gas tank, but Condit can go five hard rounds with anyone. Stun Gun has the better wrestling, and Condit’s wrestling defense is honestly below average, so I can see Stun Gun winning with top control. However, Condit has very good scrambles as shown in the Kampmann fight, so I don’t think that Stun Gun will be able to keep him down for a long time. In the striking department, Condit has the advantage, and he puts constant pressure on his opponents. This is tough to call, but I’ll go with Condit.

Sadly, i think that you are right.
Fitch is much more deserving though, and none of these guys are deserving based on their past couple of fights.
Well
Condit did knockout the former contender in his last fight…
But in the fight before that, he almost lost.
And that former contender got his shot undeservingly, and has looked terrible since the title fight.
Fitch is easily more deserving.
At the risk of fighter bashing

That's disrespectful.
Audley Harrison is a gold medalist.

I still want to see DHK vs Fitch. That just smells like a great fight.

To be fair, it could be contending against Fitch for a NEW WW champ if GSP moves up permanently.

I totally buy the winner of this fight as a legitimate test for Jeesp.
Wait…no I don’t. And I don’t see how anyone else does either.

So should we give the rest of WW division their walking papers right now?
Not like they have a chance of beating GSP. Perhaps Joe Silva should also do the same for the MW division.
Nah, the division's fun to watch even though the title picture is uninteresting.
Well…parts of the division. Namely the ones that don’t train at AKA.

The same was said with Serra.

That same tired excuse doesn't mean that GSP should be matched up with any fringe contender.

Except Condit has the ability to stop it in the third
Like the MacDonald fight.

Kim is tough as nails though.
I don’t see Condit finishing him.
Nothing I've seen of Kim leads me to believe he will be finished.
But I hope you’re right.
Love Condit.
Learn JiuJitsu, it's fun.
If Stun Gun wins via UD, he needs to fight Fitch
Then somebody’s getting a taste of their own medicine!
We’ll see a great grappling fight too!

Yeah, that was actually close to my initial thought to this announcement, that I’d rather see Stun Gun versus Fitch in a battle of blankets, and Condit versus someone exciting, like Penn. But I guess this is how it’s going down for now.

He is rumored to be injured, although I have heard nothing definitive.
As a Condit fan I would rather him fight BJ than the Donger…

Confirmed
For the first time since the news broke that he was out of UFC 132, B.J. Penn has broken his silence about the injury that plagued him during his last fight, and kept him off the July 2 card as well.
“I hurt my shoulder before the Jon Fitch fight real bad," Penn said via his personal website on Friday. "Of course pushing my shoulder really hard during the Jon Fitch fight hurt my shoulder even more."
Hopefully, Nick wins and the UFC can set up Penn/Diaz.
But it sounds like, based on Nick’s ‘words’, he would never fight a friend or training partner. Penn is both.

why
do they make Condit look like a crack addict in his photo?

I don't think
DHK is going to be threatening Condit with subs…he’s going be defending them ala the Diaz fight.
This card just keeps getting better
It lacks a big headlining bout but it’s solid from top to bottom so far.
There is no Condit fight that does not make me happy.

But I love them both so much!
I hope I don’t curse this match like I did Wandy/Akiyama.. Or do I?

Ugh
The winner has to face someone else before they get a title shot, IMO. They’re both fringe Top 10 guys, and one beating the other doesn’t tell us how they’d do against GSP, or even against a Fitch/Koscheck /Alves.
That’s why I liked Fitch/Penn, or even Penn/Condit, much more than this fight. We know how good Fitch and Penn are, and someone winning over the other would mean they deserve a title shot.
I’m fully on board with the winner of this Condit/Kim fight going up against Fitch for the next shot at GSP, though. No problems there whatsoever.
Just like Hardy needed to fight someone else after beating Swick
since they were both fringe Top 15 guys. It doesn’t matter. If GSP doesn’t move up to MW the winner of this fight, undeserving as they will be, will get thrown in there and sold as GSP’s toughest test yet.™ It will draw 5 billion viewers because everyone loves that poutine eating motherfucker.

It doesn’t make sense, the UFC has been saying for the last three Fitch fights that if he wins this, he’ll get another title shot (against Alves, scrapped because of Shields’s arrival, then against BJ Penn, scrapped because of the draw, and then again against BJ Penn, scrapped again because of injuries). At some point, Fitch will have to get his 2nd title shot. I’m all for Condit or Kim getting a title shot, but I want either of them to beat a top 5 first… an Alves, Koscheck, Shields or Fitch. If you don’t prove you can win against these guys, I have very little hope for you against GSP.

Absolutely loved Stun Gun vs Diaz. That was BJJ brilliance for the first two rounds.
And then God created Saturn ... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it.

I wanted Condit v BJ
but this is a nice fight. Stun Gun will get his chance to move into the top 10. I could see this playing out like the Condit v MacDonald fight. Condit has trouble dealing with the takedowns for a couple of rounds, and then Stun Gun gasses, and Condit comes on strong to finish the show.
This feels like its missing a headliner
Spider vs Okami rematch perhaps?
