Video: Nick Diaz Says Paul Daley Can Have the Belt
Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz fights Paul Daley this Saturday April 9th at Strikeforce: Diaz vs Daley. This is his first fight for the promotion since its acquisition by his former employer Zuffa LLC, the parent company of the UFC. Diaz comments on the acquisition for the first time to MMA Weekly and he isn't happy:
"(About UFC buying Strikeforce) Honestly, I don't understand this whole thing. I'm way too busy training. It's hard for me to understand what's going on. But I knew there was a reason why I never strapped that belt around my waist. Whatever, champion, whatever. (Paul Daley) can have the belt. I'm fighting for money."Check out the MMA Fighting interview after the jump.
"I don't feel like a champion right now that the UFC bought this organization. I don't understand all that. I thought we were competing with the UFC. I thought my belt was potentially just as important as the UFC belt and we had the best fighters here (in Strikeforce); more technical martial artists and stand-up fighters."
"But now this is all about going to the UFC so I don't care about the Strikeforce belt. There was a reason why I never put that shit on anyways."
Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley coverage
"I wasn't going to do this interview but they told me I had to. ... I feel like you instigate fights quite a bit. Maybe that's your job but where I come from people like that get slapped."

I've never loved him or hated him,
but I agree 100% with his opinion on the belt. The only value of being a champ IMO is that you get more money, exposure, and consistently elite opposition. That is the true merit of the belt.

Plus the fact that a handful of Diaz's losses would be wins if he had five rounds instead of three.
The Riggs and Karo fights immediately come to mind. Nate is similar, where I expect him to crush Dong Hyun Kim in a five rounder. The belt is a huge tactical advantage for their volume punching, high cardio, wear-em-down style.

Yeah,
I would like to see more 5- rounders at the elite level. Several state AC’s have approved 5- rounders for championship caliber fighters.

I'm not pissed
But I do think that mindset will limit his potential. The greatest in pretty much every sport wanted to be #1 more than anything else. When you have the talent and the championship mindset, the money will take care of itself.

Disagree
Look at guys like Roy Jones, Jr. Being a champion and #1 is great but if there’s one thing money doesn’t do in combat sports it’s take care of itself.
unfortunately he doesnt have the talent. That’s why he’s pissed that Zuffa bought SF. He ducked Jay Heiron in SF… what on earth is he going to do with the UFC guys?
He’s fun to watch but he hasnt fought any legit competition at 170 in the past few years and the times he did before that he lost.
If Zuffa didnt buy SF he could have continued this charade for years.
Will he beat Daley? Maybe, maybe not. Nick hasnt fought any real competition recently, daley has and even though daley also loses to the top guys he atleast has competed against them more recently.
This fight will be cardio versus durability. How durable will nick be against Daley’s leg kicks and punches versus how much Daley’s cardio can handle Nick’s pace.
If Nick can last 2 rounds without taking too much punishment Daley will be in trouble.
Cyborg did a number on Nick’s legs and I think Daley has better kicks. Nick’s wrestling sucks so unless he tires daley out first the fight will likely not hit the ground. Nick needs to survive with his boxing for 2 to 3 rounds, keep the pace high and then take him out after round 3.
Daley needs to attack Nicks legs with kicks and counter with punches hoping to catch him before paul gasses out.
by mmalogic on Apr 7, 2011 10:31 PM EDT up reply actions 2 recs
Paul's cardio ain't usually too bad.
Either way, I think Diaz is still very valuable to the UFC. He’s around the level of Carlos Condit and Paulo Thiago, a step above guys like Dan Hardy, and lightyears better than James Wilks.
It’s obvious that Diaz won’t be a top 5 fighter, and the UFC could easily give him three losses in a row by doing a unification bout with GSP, Fitch after he loses, and then Mike Pierce. But he’d also slaughter (and actually finish) the guys that Amir Sadollah has been beating. And probably slaughter Amir Sadollah. Diaz vs. Rumble could main event a TUF finale easily.
There’s plenty of room for Zuffa and Nick Diaz to make money together.

He wants money? Then he needs to tow the company line and be marketable on top of being a good fighter. There’s very limited appeal for a ADD, pot head for big corps like Nike.
It’s why even if he is champion he won’t get the big money like GSP.

1. In the cage he’s exciting as hell. Name another fighter knockin ppl out and pulling off gogoplatas. Has he ever been in a boring fight? No. Watch in his last fan w/ cyborg he sticks his face directly into Cyborgs while landing repeated body shots. Now watch his expression. The kid is a fighter, straight up.
2. Outside of the cage? Dude. Seriously he’s pure inadvertent comedy. He’s completely bizarre and nonsensical. Who else comes out to the pre fight press conference face off just giving the finger. I mean he walks into the stare down w/ his arm out stretched finger raised. Who fights his brother with sais. Who flips off a camera in his car while drivin to the gym and is proud of it.
The real question is how is his fan base not 10x bigger

Thats all well and good
So obviously he is a very classy guy, but take a look at the top ten WW and tell me he doesn’t lose to all of them. He’s a tough guy no doubt I’m not disputing that, but if he wants these outrageous paydays he keeps talking about let him fight Alves, Kos, Fitch,or Sanchez again and then I will be impressed.
by despisedIcon856 on Apr 7, 2011 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions
Oh, I thought you were askin for an explanation of his popularity. At any rate he’s fighting a top 10 WW this Saturday so we’ll see how that plays out. Also we don’t really know how he’d do against those other guys till we see em fight, but I definitely see him as a game opponent for anyone.
I just find him very cocky for the opponents he has been fighting. No offense to his last few opponents, but they are not even top 25. Don’t get me wrong I like watching entertaining guys like Cyborg and Zaromskis, but they aren’t the caliber of fighter that he will face in the UFC. But dude for him to act like that to Ariel wasn’t called for, it doesn’t make him tough to treat a reporter (who is, as Diaz said only doing his job) like that.

I like him because he’s a character, and because when I see a Nick Diaz video on this site, I never know what kind of crazy shit is going to come out of his mouth. Compare that to the turbo-bores in the top half of the UFC WW division, and it’s no contest who I’m interested in following outside the cage.
As for inside the cage, Nick Diaz might be the most consistently fun-to-watch fighter in the top 10 of the WW division.

Nick doesn’t act or sound that way because he’s a pothead. While he has obvious tells that he smokes a lot, in reality he’s probably self-medicating. His behavior is the result of terrible ADHD, no respect for grammar, and a me-vs.-the-world mentality that’s so ingrained it leads to anti-social speech and actions. I smoke weed every day and it certainly doesn’t make me less articulate so I sort of take exception to people thinking that (it’s not your post in particular).

there is literally zero substantial research that suggests MJ use permanently ruins brain cells, short term memory, or anything like that. The only time your short term memory is effected is during the actual time you’re high.

I so look forward to the incoherent ramblings of Nick Diaz
I think that’s prolly the main reason I spend time on MMA websites.
One shouldn’t try and understand his logic on how he’s “being paid way to much, but not enough.” One shouldn’t try and understand why he thought his belt was just as important and he was just as good as the UFC but now do to new ownership, he suddenly feels like the belt is worthless even though all the fighters are the same.
But gotta say that “but where I come from people get slapped” was awesome. He was definitely F’ing w/ Ariel. Dude is straight up comedic gold and can fight on top of that. What a beast.
I agree with Nick
Mayweather is a bitch IMO but he has a point similar to Nick’s in regards to being a professional fighter. He’s dedicated his life to this sport as a career, not as a token of pride. He’s a PRIZE fighter. He fights for a prize. The UFC pay structure is grossly unbalanced and at a certain point it probably isn’t worth it for some of the fighters that could do other things. The Joe Daddy health insurance issue comes to mind when you think about how poorly some of the fighters have it.
Ariel hides his bias pretty well but it’s obvious he’s Zuffa’s golden boy, and he’s taken his game to another level by subtly trying to hype fights. Nick is completely right. Ariel was digging for shit talk from both him and Daley and trying to instigate to help hype the fight which is bullshit. Just do your job and let fighters talk shit if they want to.

stevenson
joe stevenson makes plenty of money to be able to affoed health insurance. he chose not to. that is no ones fault but his and his alone.
Maybe he can, maybe he can’t. We don’t know the details of his expenses because he could live humbly in a house big enough for his wife and kids and simply be irresponsible. Or he could be paying his first wife out the ass in child support and alimony while also paying down a mortgage and whatnot. We don’t know.
But surely the UFC could help the fighters out in this regard, correct?
no way
stevenson made over $250,000 that year. it’s pure irresponsibility. he even said so himself in an interview that was posted here on BE at the time. i’m not a fan of dana, but why do people try to hold the UFC to a higher standard than every other paying job? because, at the end of the day, that’s what the UFC is: a workplace. just because we find it entertaining to watch these people work doesn’t alter the facts. joe is well paid (especially for being a mediocre fighter) and he simply didn’t take care of things like he should, especially considering the risk of injury is inherent at his job. i’ll betcha $100 that he didn’t forget to buy a sweetass car though. priorities.
I would give my left arm to see this man fight BJ Penn.

Nick Diaz is evil GSP
There is a lot of similarities between Diaz and GSP.
GSP was a stand up guy who became the dominant wrestler in his organization.
Diaz was a ground fighter who became the dominant striker in his organization.
They both extoll the virtues of being a martial artist; that is how they refer to themselves.
Outside the cage, Diaz does triathlons and smokes weed; GSP is a bit bookish, with a passion for dinosaurs.
Diaz is just from a different area of the world, so he comes across a lot more hard-edged, but I bet he and GSP would get along quite well.
You just said this, comparing a Diaz brother and GSP.
They both extoll the virtues of being a martial artist; that is how they refer to themselves.
You know how I know you’re high right now?
GSP’s shower drain pubes have more tact than any Diaz family stain at its best.
i dont like how Diaz and company handled the Mayhem situation.
However if you were in a sticky situation in the 209 (one of americas most dangerous cities) you don’t want a friend that wants to “talk out the problem”. You want a diaz brother dropping bitches before the other guys know what the fuck is going on.
Diaz just doesn’t seem to have an off switch. When not in a “209” type setting talking out the problem could go a little smoother.
Loyalty is a characteristic of a true martial artist. Nick is just from a different culture.

Honestly though … I can barely stand him. I mean I love the guy, he’s fam… and i got his back forever. At the same time, he drives me insane. But I guess since we basically grew up together, we can hang out and I know already. My bro cant … cant stand him. In fact most of the people that know him … just cant stand him.
YET… when he first meets people I always get that … “Duuude, wheres your cousin!? That fucker is nuts! haha he makes me laugh!”
I used to be like wtf? But I guess if you can get a guy like that in doses … he’s probably a fun dude … and probably why this guy gets that love I see … I wish I wasnt clouded =(
everybody knows a guy like that. the dude that people just LOVE when they first meet him, and you’re thinking “that’s because you don’t know him.” people think he’s being obnoxious to be funny when in reality he’s an obnoxious d-bag all the time. yup. i got a buddy like that.
I try to avoid people like that like diaz avoids wrestlers. Hang out with them twice. If they are still douches then im outty.

I wasn’t going to do this interview but they told me I had to. … I feel like you instigate fights quite a bit. Maybe that’s your job but where I come from people like that get slapped
That might be the best Nick Diaz quote sense his rant on the conference call

I love Nick Diaz. He isn’t articulate, but he has solid points on the sport and a perfect F the world attitude.

whats hard to understand about the zuffa buyout?
He’s a champ now but will be run out of the ufc soon enough(again)
He has the luxury of ducking miller and woodley in sf, but in the ufc he can’t duck everyone in the division.

I get paid too much money, but not enough.
Ya’know, i just, ya know, don’t get it it ya know? Um.. yeah… big money ya know? Over paid, too high, super experienced, living man! How to live! Man.. ya know.
I’ve been on and off the Diaz fanboat, but this interview was gold.
He is developing the paranoia level of...
someone on pot. Did he cycle off this time to pass the test?
He is accusing Ariel of being an instigator and being very negative towards him. If he represents the 209, it must really be that bad of a shithole.
You are joking about 'someone on pot'
Right?

I drove through Stockton once. I know why Diaz is always pissed.

Was Nate expecting Santa Claus or something. He’s looking around like something big was about to happen. Were the police finally onto him?
I get that Nick is Nick and there’s something entertaining about him, but the middle finger thing just seems so tired. It’s like saying “the bomb”. It means nothing. It’s not offensive because it’s so played out, it’s not that humorous because he’s being serious, it’s just sort of…lame?
I get that there’s a team of BE readers that scroll through every page and look for a gif of him flipping it, but otherwise doesn’t he think that an alternative hand signal that actually offends would be a good idea?

I haven't commented in months.
But I hope Daley swells Nicks mouth closed for good.

Wow
He just Shat all over SF. Any one else think Mayhem and Diaz should coach Tuf. He said he would move up for money and this will pay Diaz bug bucks. I think this is possible especially of he loses to Daley.
Jules: Normally, both your asses would be dead as fucking fried chicken, but you happen to pull this shit while I'm in a transitional period so I don't wanna kill you, I wanna help you. But I can't give you this case, it don't belong to me. Besides, I've already been through too much shit this morning over this case to hand it over to your dumb ass.
LOL
This is why I love this guy. Just awesome. Which other current champion would say something like this? Very funny, great stuff.
I'd say that I dislike Diaz, but I'm afraid I'd get another flame by Chris Barton.
I'd change my name to Mr. Carrano.

The best part is
I’m not even a Diaz fan really. Ask “War Diaz” about how many times he’s flagged me for “bashing” Nick. Regardless, you guys need to learn to reign in the hate a bit.

diaz you say you want to be on the top
the ufc is the top, your not making any sense. i think he is upset bc he knows he cant beat gsp..
there's something
amazing about Nick Diaz.
When I hear him speak I feel I’m listening to someone who is outside a lot of the conventions of society and the rules of the mma ‘media sect’ and is able to speak with some real heart and clarity as a result.
Its genuinely refreshing to hear someone who talks based on the reality of their situation where you hear all the time that in their approach and in their mentality – they are a fighter who is aware of many of the things around them that others are not.
I probably look forward to hearing Nick Diaz interviews more than any other fighter.
I think in time, as the spectacle of mma becomes more and more mainstream sports-esque, we will see more and more carbon copy athletes and standardised athlete approach / fighterspeak. I think it is only then – probably after the Diaz brothers are no longer on the scene, that many will understand and realise the kind of value and colourfulness that they bring.
If you’re like myself then it is a privilige to be able to work on that appreciation now.

Most telling quote for me
" He says hes gonna knock me out, i say thats the only way for him to win."
If you wanna throw down in fisticuffs, fine! I've got Jack Johnson and Tom O'Leary waitin' for ya...right here!
RIght, because losing the SF belt is really going to help his leverage
That belt and winning this upcoming fight is his golden ticket to get all that money he wants. He’s got to reconcile that contradiction.
Those so called "unified rules"(UFC rules)
Those rules suck, I can only wish some day the Pride/Dream Rules will be aplyed to all MMA, as it already is around the hole world except for USA ! I mean if they want to watch wrestling go watch it don’t aply those rules to mma ! Like the sonnen fight with Anderson, if it was on Pride he would get some yelow cards for stalling! But in the UFC he was awarded for stalling the fight!? What the Fuc*
There are so many things wrong with what you just said
for starters the Unified rules are the standard here in England
