BJ Penn Will Not Fight at UFC 132 in July

Photo

With Jon Fitch out of their fight with a shoulder injury, B.J. Penn has decided to withdraw from the card according to MMA Junkie. Carlos Condit petitioned to get the fight against Penn, but the UFC has stopped looking for an opponent because of Penn's request:
Sources indicated while the UFC was actively seeking a new opponent, Penn preferred to reschedule his next contest.
Dave Meltzer (subscription only) is reporting that the real reason could be an injured B.J. Penn:
B.J. Penn’s next fight is up in the air. Penn suffered an undisclosed injury and is getting it looked at and getting an MRI done this week. Depending on how that goes will depend if he’s moved back a show or given a new opponent for 7/2.

Damn. I guess this is why they booked Wandy/Leben.

Dammit keep Condit on the card and have him fight Stun Gun.

Brilliance.

Plus Condit gets to continue his run to UFC WW Champ.

Condit/ Stun Gun is a toss up.

I don't know.

I’m an admitted Condit lover, but I honestly just think he’s a little tiny bit better at EVERYTHING than Stun Gun.

Really, EVERYTHING!?

I tend to think that DHK is a tad better at that whole “wrestling” thing.

If Condit wins, it’s by pushing the pace on Stun Gun throughout, standing and on the ground (probably from his back), and then pouring on the pressure late for a stoppage. I tend to think DHK would probably take him down at will and win a top control centric decision, though. Miura was giving the dude fits and is nowhere near the overall grappler that the Dongman is.

I guess to each their own, but I think he could wrestle with him. He isn’t a great wrestler by any means, but I think good enough to keep it upright, where he would completely outclass DHK.

A strong wind could get Condit down.

Kampmann, Ellenberger, and MacDonald were all able to get Condit down frequently, and I think DHK is a better takedown/ top control artist than any of them.

CC definitely has the edge standing, though.

I think DHK takes it.

The short-term memory in MMA is mindblowing. Condit looked good against Hardy, but lets not forget the fight before that, where he got schooled for the majority of the fight against a 20yo in his second Zuffa fight. I don’t think that Condit can keep on his feet, and i think that Diaz’ guard is more dangerous. Kim has suspect cardio though, so perhaps Condit can pull it off in the end like against MacDonald.

Do you mean that fight he won? Doesn’t matter what happens before that, he won. Like Anderson-Sonnen, people got pissy about an immediate rematch because when it comes down to it, Sonnen lost decisively, so no rematch. Same thing, Condit decisively beat McDonald, so it doesn’t really matter if Rory did well before that.

I wouldn’t really call it controversial at all, its just that it happened with under 20 seconds remaining in a fight Macdonald had largely dominated but he was getting cracked by Condit and offering almost no defense. I don’t want the ref thinking “this guy can probably take 10 more seconds of this beating without any real permanent damage” or some shit like that.

Would I favor MacD in a rematch? Probably, but iirc even he wasn’t upset by the stoppage.

MacD was getting his ass whooped.

If that fight didn’t get stopped, it would’ve been a 10-8 round at least, and perhaps even a 10-7.

You are missing the point.

I’m not disputing whether he won or not. When analyzing how a potential matchup could go down between two fighters, we look at how they performed against previous opponents. As in, watch the fights and see how they would stack up, not just look at the fight finder. What happens before the fight ends does matter, a whole lot actually.

I have a feeling this is Penn deciding who he feels is a worthy challenger.

Fitch is obviously number one contender. Condit isn’t. I can totally see why Penn may be bombing the fight.
As an MMA fan I would like to see Condit and Penn fight. As has been mentioned between Brookhouse and Breen, it doesn’t serve MMA well to declare a couple of fighters worthy and the rest simply card-fodder.

Ebersole and John Howard?

Ebersole needs to pick up some more wins first. John Howard is on a two fight losing streak so he has no business fighting Condit either.

Oh and Koscheck said that he can’t even start training till summer because his face is still fucked up.

Other than those I agree with the list, Ellenberger would be good too.

His point still stands tho

Joe silva is not going to put a guy on a two fight losing streak against a guy who’s arguably making a title run

by Chris Hall on Apr 7, 2011 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Howard is not a serious contender. For Condit to be positioned for a title fight because he happens to be the best guy that GSP hasn’t beaten the crap out of yet rather than because he has fought and proven that he deserves it against the top contenders in the division is…unfortunate. If Rick Story beats Alves, he should jump over Condit in the rankings and in the title fight talk instantly. And that will probably happen before Condit steps in a ring again against whoever.

If BJ Penn is doing this because he wants to fight a better opponent in what would be a better fight (and a rematch of a wholly competitive first bout), I’m not about to complain. Trying to force #1 contender fights between mediocre fighters because they’re who is available when better guys are out for whatever reason is lamesauce.

He is an OK fighter and a man who’s career will probably be spent ranked at #7 in the world, regardless of what he does. Funny thing is, when K-1 and boxing were at their peaks, dudes used to rematch all the time because, hey, those were the best guys and so they fought each other a bunch. UFC fans, for whatever reason, want to be told that some guy who’s barely top 10 should get a title shot or get an eliminator because they’re fresh instead of deserving. The worst part about that ends up being how those middling talents were “legitimate title contenders” from then on to the end of time, like Daley and Roy Nelson.

by VirtualBalboa on Apr 8, 2011 10:37 AM EDT up reply actions

While I agree in theory with this, there is little interest in seeing a fight like GSP/Fitch 3+ times when the loser has shown nothing to give any indication he would fare better in a rematch. Fitch deserves one with a win over BJ perhaps, but like Kos, after he gets dominated twice there is no need to see it ever again.
