Fedor and Camp Considering Move to Light Heavyweight, No Opponent Set

Fedor training in Holland

Fedor Emelianenko was MMA's top heavyweight for over a decade, racking up nearly thirty straight wins while ruling the world's best heavyweight division in Pride. But times change and now that Fedor's lost two in a row to Fabricio Werdum and Antonio Silva, some people are saying he's too small for a heavyweight. Fedor spoke with Cyril Garcia of MixFight.nl about his weight class situation:
MixFight.nl: Do you consider dropping to light heavyweight? And possibly fight Dan Henderson for the light heavyweight title?

Fedor: Yes I have talked about it with my manager Vadim Finklestein. But as far as I know, there is no offer made by Strikeforce to fight as a light heavyweight.
Fedor is looking to return in July which is the same month Dan Henderson has planned his return. Here's to hoping this fight materializes.

He probably

still would take a rematch with Werdum, as you could say the loss was due to Fedor being wild and not respecting Fab’s grappling chops. Bigfoot straight whooped his ass though.

Oh, for sure.

Bigfoot is a SKILLED big man, and that’s the difference. Heavyweight is improving, and the big guys are now well rounded and talented fighters. Gone are the days where Fedor can cruise over much larger men.

And really, few of Fedor’s best wins were over massive heavyweights. Nogueira, Crocop, and Arlovski are probably the best quality wins on his record (in context, with how they were viewed at the time), and they’re all on the smaller side of HW.

More than 3 minutes under full mount of a 50lbs heavier fighter and got freed at the end of the round, tried a foot lock and was ready to go for the third. However Dana or whoever wants to put it, the guy is a LEGEND.

That’s what made me a fan.

I’m relatively new to MMA (only started following in mid-2009). One of the first fights I ever watched was Fedor-Rogers. I’d heard his name thrown around as a GOAT, but after watching him take a beating in the 1st I wasn’t impressed. Until they showed his face to start off the 2nd round – despite being smashed up and bleeding, the look of utter calm on his face was intimidating.

Fedor won that first round against Rogers

His nose got busted up by a jab but he landed more and got more takedowns than Rogers. Rogers did pin him against the cage, but even that famed GnP he threw against Fedor missed on all but one or two and ended with him having to escape an armbar.

I don't know if he does...

Werdum is a solid 240, Fedor a doughy 230. I think he could win if he fought really smart, but Werdum tooled Fedor on the ground. And I’m betting a rematch would hit the ground at some point.

There's no way

Fedor has 40 lbs of fat hanging around. Not even 30 lbs.

I put him at around 16% bodyfat. If he lost 8-10% of that, he would be in the average MMA fighter’s BF range, and would only have to cut like 5-10 lbs of water.

There is absolutely no way to accurately guess closer than maybe +/- 5% (of BF%, i.e. something like 12% – 24%) where his BF is at by images. Aside from visible fat, there is intramuscular fat and internal fat (around the organs mostly), all of which varies considerably from person to person.

Two seemingly identical physiques might differ by 5% or more in accurately tested BF%.

Exactly man.

If he just tightened up his diet, and used a more advanced S&C program, he would hardly have to cut much water weight.

Truthfully, for a modern MMA fighter, I think Fedor has a middleweight body, but I don’t think there’s any way in hell he’d cut down to 185. Not at this stage in the game. I think we should just be happy that he’s giving serious thought to dropping to 205, where he at least won’t be hopelessly undersized.

Fedor vs. Hendo would be an awesome fight

I might even favor Hendo, although if Fedor wins it would set up some really interesting crossover fights for Zuffa. I doubt M-1 would allow him to get in the cage with Bones, though. Although, Fedor has really slick armbars so that would be a stern test for the new LHW champ.

Tbh I don’t hold much memitem says in very high regard. Fedor is only 6 ft and a sloppy 230. He can almost definitely lose 15 lbs of fat off the bat, and then 215 would be right in the range for an actual camp to make it to 185. This would of course come after its proven he can make 205.

I’ve always considered Fedor very disciplined and dedicated, at least as far as his training goes. It’s just his diet he’s been lax with. If he tightens that up, 205 won’t be a problem, and 185 could be a possibility.

I remember thinking AA was tagging him at the time. then I watched the gifs and the slo-mo replay, and realized he landed about 3 good punches out of 50.

by POW on Apr 7, 2011 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions

I think the AA fight was the begining of the end for Fedor.

AA was getting the better of Fedor and would have one that fight if he didnt go for that random ass flying knee.

I don't think

there’s any way we can know that. And it wasn’t really a “random ass flying knee,” he’d done the same move against Rothwell and Nelson. Fedor had obviously studied tape and prepared for that eventuality, it just so happens that the perfect counter was his best punch.

Of course there is no way to say who would have one if it went all the way. I just feel like AA had a 60/40 chance to get that Decision.

This tired myth again...

Fedor wasn’t any faster than a prime Mirko or Arlovski, and he beat them both. He dealt with Arona & Babalu’s speed fine. It was his SKILL advantage that carried him to victory over larger heavyweights, now that that gap is closing, he’s lost definitively.

Being faster than most opponents was definitely a plus, but his style isn’t necessarily predicated on being much faster than his opponents.

Plus, Frank Mir has arguably a better guard and couldn’t do anything to escape Brock’s top control. He might not have Bigfoots bjj saavy, but I wouldn’t doubt their in the same league in terms of top control.

Frank Mir

has a good offensive, open guard, but his half guard is dismal. Mir has been routinely smashed from HG throughout his career.

And aside from Mir, the guys Brock has taken down have either been able to scramble endlessly (Herring), or neutralize any damage taken and get their feet back under them multiple times (Randy, Cain).

Brock has pretty good top control, but not like Bigfoot. I’ve never seen anybody get up from under Bigfoot like Randy & Cain did against Lesnar.

I’m definitely saying than Randy and Cain are better at “getting up” than Fedor and Arlovski. Working from your back, i.e. working guard is a lot different than being put on your back and getting up. Cain is insanely good at popping back up from a takedown, and I don’t think anybody has more mat awareness than Randy. Fedor has a more dangerous guard then either of those guys, but that’s not what we’re talking about.

by POW on Apr 7, 2011 12:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I think

Fedor & Arlovski are both good at getting up from their backs, they’ve shown that historically.

And how would you know that about Cain? The only guy who’s put him on his back was Lesnar. Randy is good at scrambling to his feet as well, but Nog had him flat on his back for a while, plus Ricco & Barnett were able to dominate Randy from the top.

by ElliotMatheny on Apr 7, 2011 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Cain

made a wrestling career out of being the faster man and better scrambler. You have a fair point about Randy being controlled on his back, but Ricco and Barnett fights were a decade ago (before Randy developed into the guy he’s supposed to be now). And Nog didn’t control Randy from the top using wrestling, he just kept tight transitions and threw every sub in the book at him.

As for Arlovski, he just hasn’t ever fought the level of wrestler Cain/Randy have. He did fight Pezzao, and I don’t think he was controlled and smashed nearly as bad as Brock would give it to him. As for Fedor’s smasing at the hands of Pezzao: voodoo.

by POW on Apr 7, 2011 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Fair points.

I’m of the opinion that Bigfoot has shown slightly better top control than Brock, but BL is no slouch. The beating he put on Frank Mir was horrific, and he was able to keep Herring (a very adept scrambler) on the ground indefinitely.

problem is ‘sweating it out’ is just water weight. Which there is a limit to how much can be lost.
Cant sweat off fat. But I get what you mean. All I know is that after XX years not having to be on a completely strict diet, not having to cut excess weight on a constant basis and then having to adjust later on in his athletic life and prime… thats gonna be tough and his body may not respond well. Especially on his first cut.

I don't know,

With an athlete’s diet, and a revamped S&C program, I think Fedor could easily shed 15 lbs of straight fat. He could probably lost most of it within a month.

Definitely

He could probably lose it in three weeks.

by mabel4life on Apr 7, 2011 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

You have a very good point here

Though, it seems like he would need to diet more than cut to make 205.

Furthermore, that man seems to have an iron constitution. I know cutting weight must suck and some guys have a really hard time with it. I just don’t see Fedor complaining about it. If he has decided to do it and has his Priest’s support, I think he could do the cut with no problem.

by Schwizzles on Apr 7, 2011 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions

I still don’t understand this. If he diets down to 205, his opponents will still outweigh him on fight night because they will cut to 205. He’s never cut before, so trying to cut to 205 is asking for a lot, and has the potential to blow up. He should just fight smaller hws or or big LHWs in the HW division.

by Phildo on Apr 7, 2011 11:46 AM EDT reply actions

The weight gap in LHW is smaller than HW.

He may still be outweighed in LHW, but it will probably only be about 5-15lbs…. And thats a big IF.

It still comes down to who can fight though, theres not enough of a weight gap at 205.

Fedor can finally fight:

Elvis Sinosic!
Bill Mahood!
Hector Ramirez!
Mike Whitehead!
Vernon “Tiger” White!
Krystoff Soszynski!
Igor Pokrajec!

…and so on.

by POW on Apr 7, 2011 11:53 AM EDT reply actions

You forgot Babalu. That’d probably be his first fight as a LHW, considering we’re talking about Strikeforce here…

by Shnak on Apr 7, 2011 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Good call.

It’s been about 15 minutes since Sobral has been knocked unconscious. He’s due.

I'm happy for Fedor.

I think this is a great move, and I respect him for it. Not much else to say, but I’m glad he see’s his own mortality.

Damn. If Fedor vs Hendo comes through

Myself along with any other Pride fan’s would be salivating the entire week of the fight. That would be amazing.
Fedor at LHW is AWESOME

by Robust23 on Apr 7, 2011 12:07 PM EDT reply actions

This is a great smart move..

Go to LHW, loose weight, show some muscles, build S &C, get LHW belt, THEN challenge for HW Title after he regains his confidence/dominance..He will then start back on his AURA and Legend status

by Bimmer76 on Apr 7, 2011 12:47 PM EDT reply actions

Won't happen

I doubt we’ll ever see Fedor fight at LHW for a simple reason; he’d then be admitting he’s not an elite HW anymore, and would pretty much confirm what many have been saying for quite a while now, that he’s only maintained his aura of invicibility and his #1 HW title by mostly fighting cans over the last few years. I think his ego is too big to be admitting that.

by Shnak on Apr 7, 2011 12:52 PM EDT reply actions

I agree but can only hope

he definitely needs straighten up the records with Bigfoot and Werdum first

by Bimmer76 on Apr 7, 2011 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see Fedor fighting guys his own size. A fight against Henderson in June would be a fantastic start!

by Shnak on Apr 7, 2011 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

You mean M-1's ego

I doubt Fedor cares about losing his legacy at HW, achievements like his can’t be “undone”. In fact, it sounds like he’s initiating the discussion about dropping in weight.

I guess everybody is bigger than Fedor.

I tend to be biased towards strikers . . . exciting strikers.

I wish I had a gif

Of a light bulb turning on. He should have done this a while ago.

Frankie should cut to FW now even though he's the #1 LW.

I feel there is a difference

But I loved watching Fedor trash everyone he faced though

I agree he should have done this a while ago

but given the fact that for years the skilled HWs used to be his size, he could streamroll larger (less skilled) HWs and compete with the more skilled HWs on equal grounds weightwise. Now that things have changed, it’s clear that larger HWs with good grappling skills will cause trouble for any HW of Fedor’s size. Smart move.

I'm hoping that wasn't intentional.

Yeah I don’t think it was. I’ve done that before.

Dropping down to where the fighters are even more skilled and more well rounded?

and he would still be small for 205. (well not against Hendo who is a 185’er at heart but in general)

Eh.

by dbcb on Apr 7, 2011 3:04 PM EDT reply actions

Its an interesting move for him. At least he is fighting guys his own size now. With that said he is jumping into a shark tank that i’m not to sure he can last in. In Strikeforce there are maybe 2 or 3 guys who will give him major troubles if not beat him. If he made his way to the UFC as a LHW i think he gets destroyed, i have a feeliing he would battle it out win a few lose a few and end up at the same level as Franklin and forrest (which is not a bad thing)

by Riley_96 on Apr 7, 2011 3:12 PM EDT reply actions

Part of Fedor's charm is that he's pudgy.

If he drops to 205, will that be the end of “Fedorable?”

by pud333 on Apr 7, 2011 3:20 PM EDT reply actions

wait a second!

I thought “their was on way ever fedor will cut the weight.” Ha ha I think it is so weird when people try to tell you with certainly what someone they don’t even know will do.
