Frank Mir's Solution: Don't Train With UFC Fighters in Your Weight Class

In the aftermath of Rashad Evans leaving Greg Jackson MMA in a huff because his former teammate Jon Jones was willing to fight him for the UFC belt, UFC heavyweight champ Frank Mir has a simple solution to the teammate dilemma: just don't train with any UFC fighters in your weight class:
"When I first got the call (about the UFC 130 match - Roy Nelson and I) were actually in the gym together the very next morning so we kind of discussed how it was going to go like 'Look, there's only so many heavyweights, I guess we're going to have to fight.' I think both of us were looking forward to fighting when there was a little bit more on the line as far as one of us having a title or pushing ourselves up into a number one contender spot. It is what it is. It's beneficial to the promoter to have two guys from Vegas fighting on their Memorial Day weekend card so I understand it and its business, so I got to just go out there and fight."

"One lesson I learned from Jon Jones vs. Rashad Evans is if there's any heavyweights in the UFC, I'm not going to train with them anymore. Why would you? That's a potential opponent. If he gets any kind of advantage over you in the gym, learns a secret or knows something about an injury that could potentially cost you a lot of money. I think in the future if guys are smart, they'll stop training with guys in their own weight class."

Agree

Doesn’t happen often, but I completely agree with Mir here.

by Shnak on Apr 7, 2011 9:33 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah...

Because it’s not like he needs to learn to deal with true HW size to beat guys like Lesnar/Carwin/etc…

by Diz D on Apr 7, 2011 9:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Nelson is pretty damn big.

I know it’s not all lean mass, but he has serviceable takedowns and great grappling, as well as solid hands. They’re good training partners for eachother.

It is quite the conundrum, though. Either you run the risk of having to fight, or get out of the way of a teammate in your own weight class, or you only have 1 serious fighter in each weight class per gym.

Somehow, I’m sure they can find big training partners who don’t fight in the UFC…

by Shnak on Apr 7, 2011 9:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Fighters (especially HW's)

would have to spar with straight HW boxers/ kickboxers and roll with straight HW grapplers.

Why can’t UFC fighters train with Strikeforce fighters? That seems to work for Cain and Cormier over at AKA, doesn’t it? Now, granted, when/if SF merges into the UFC, it’ll make things more complicated for fighters, I agree, but then, there would also be more fighters in the UFC and thus limiting the chances of two fighters who train together from having to fight each other.

by Shnak on Apr 7, 2011 10:33 AM EDT up reply actions

If SF

were to keep running past the current fighter’s contracts, then I think that would be a great idea.

i love frank mir

and you are right that we are in the minority. hes well spoke (for a fighter) and his jitz is nasty. most guys in the hw division have defense jiu jitzu, they learned enough to make themselves an mma fighter rather than boxer or wrestler. not many guys around that size with a skillset like that, and the ones that are around are in the twilight times like nog….and mir himself soon enough.

Same here

I thought he was a hell of alot better than Bonnar, that’s for sure. And melodramatic/ hyperbolic pre- fight trash talk aside, I really do like his opinions (on fighting mainly, but also on politics/ philosophy/ etc).

I like his fighting style too.

I wouldn’t go so far as to call myself a fan, but I definitely don’t dislike the guy. He’s legitimately the fifth best HW in the UFC, I still think he beats everyone except the top four. He usually has exciting fights with good build-up from trash talk, and he’s smart, handsome, what’s not to like? Agreed he was very good commentator for WEC while it lasted.

As a fighter, he’s in the middle for me. Sometimes I cheer for him, sometimes I’m rooting for the other guy. I was glad to see him come back to a high level after his accident though.

I've always liked Mir

Liked his commentary, liked the confident way he carried himself. He seems like a really smart and articulent guy. I always chalked up his hate to Brock fanboyism, and some people’s general dislike of intelligent people.

Training w/ Forrest will only get Frank so far,

seriously, he needs to train with HWs. Maybe you can get away with this at the lower weight classes, and train with a mixture of guys above and below your class, but at HW, how do you replicate the size and strength of Cain, or even more so a Carwin or a Lesnar?

by jhf884 on Apr 7, 2011 10:22 AM EDT reply actions

What about

Known weight class wanderers, like Randy Couture, B.J. Penn and Dan Henderson?

It’s hard to predict where a career will go and to assume that a fighter will forever more stay at heavyweight is presumptuous as all hell.

Retrospectively

they definitely should’ve had Mir on as coach for TUF, and just gave Junior a tune up fight. Against a guy like Madsen, so that he could work on defending against wrestlers.

I actually think JDS is pretty funny, but it’s obviously hard for him to let his personality shine through the language barrier.

I actually can’t think of a single time the UFC has done a “tune-up” fight the equivalent of that.

by umbalata on Apr 7, 2011 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I can't really either,

except for maybe when Florian fought Joe Daddy, while Penn/ St. Pierre 2 was happening? I remember Kenny being the consensus #1, and still taking that fight.

Also, Chuck fought Babalu in the interim while Tito/ Ken Shammy happened, despite already being guaranteed a title shot.

by Fedornuthugger on Apr 7, 2011 12:07 PM EDT reply actions

I'll just repeat what I said over on Mania

The problem with that, Frank, is you don’t get used to fighting the right weight of people. You, of all people, should know this, having had big problems when large behemoths with good control are dominating your position. Sure you don’t give anything away, but you don’t gain quite as much when you’re 250 and rolling with some 200 lb dude.
